The Quality of Courage, by Mickey Mantle

As a man who played baseball brilliantly despite near-constant pain from a succession of injuries, Mickey Mantle knew something about courage. In The Quality of Courage we find Mickey’s opinion on some of his widely-recognized associates including Jackie Robinson, Roger Maris, Casey Stengel, Joe DiMaggio, and Ted Williams. Here also are Mantle’s opinions on some lesser known but equally meritorious candidates: war hero and pitcher Lou Brissie and umpire Bill Grieve. And then there is his opinion of those with whom he probably felt the strongest bond: players such as Roy Campanella, Don Zimmer, and Jimmy Piersall whose principal asset of physical excellence was suddenly taken from them. Much is made of the need for role models in our society, but it is perhaps as instructive to learn which qualities the role models themselves find worthy of respect and emulation. Mickey gives us his list in his characteristic straightforward style, leavened with humor and a wealth of good stories.

Amazon.com Review
Something of a publishing stunt when it first appeared in the mid-1960s, The Quality of Courage was conceived as a baseball-steeped companion to JFK's bestselling compendium of political valor, Profiles in Courage. The literary equivalent of primitive art, this slight collection--written under the careful direction of ghostwriter Creamer, one of the best sportswriters of the era--scored as a surprisingly compelling read in its own right. Like Kennedy, Mantle was, in the nation's eyes, a certified hero who played valiantly through pain. Using Profiles as a model, Mantle and Creamer compiled a series of personal sketches of teammates and opponents who continued to take the field and play their best despite personal adversity. "The people I most respected in my life were people who had courage," Mick tell us, and "the stories I liked best were about courage."

Reading more like conversational monologues than a written text--Creamer's marvelous achievement is in letting Mick's voice come through as familiar rather than some chiseled artifice. Mantle's observations on such ballplayers as Whitey Ford, Joe DiMaggio, Phil Rizzuto, Roger Maris, Roy Campanella, Ted Williams, and Jimmy Piersall are really quite charming in the way they reveal his homespun attitudes, opinions, and the qualities he respected. From these pages, it's sadly apparent that Mantle had an easier time drawing strength and inspiration from others than he did carrying the weight of inspiring a generation on his own broad, brawny back. --Jeff Silverman

From Library Journal
Though winter still rages, it's never too early to start thinking about baseball. In this 1964 memoir, the great Mantle talks about his own life in the game as well as his relationship with many of the other star players of his day.

Review
... is what Yankee baseball hero Mickey Mantle respects above all else - even in people he dislikes. These 23 short, anecdotal essays all emphasize courage in facing the situations that arise in sports and life. The essay/speeches are earnest, and each centers on a common problem that calls for intestinal fortitude - doing things or going places alone, honesty, etc. The big names of baseball and umpiring are often called into play with stories that illustrate these points. The introduction explains that the author gets many more invitations to address Little League and young people's functions than he can possibly fill. This suggests the usefulness of his book to speakers gathering their intestinal fortitude to face an audience of youngsters. (Kirkus Reviews)

a must read for all

I got this book as a present when I was 7 years old (1968). It has been one of my favorite books ever since. Each vignette teaches a lesson in courage. From the story of the little boy who is courageous at his first haircut to Jackie Robinson's first year in the big leagues. I have been trying to locate this for my nephew and my son. It has been out of print since 1970. I was truly excited to see that it was being reprinted. Many more people will now have the opportunity to read about courageous individuals and how they can apply these principals to their lives

Read it when I was 10, cost 50 cents, still have a copy

I read this book when I was ten years old. It was the most influential book I've ever read. I did not know it was re-issued. I would highly recommended it to children. I can't imagine a better book for children; it's useful for adults, too.
The book brings out examples of what Mickey Mantle said he respected more than any other thing: courage. In fact, just days before his death, brought on by alcohol abuse, he said to the nation: "If you want a role model here's one - don't be like me, play like me, but don't be like me." Sports and media personnel, including sports people who knew Mantle, expressed how surprised and amazed they were by the couragious example he showed when faced with death. It was no surprise to me, it was right out of this book. In fact, on the first page he quotes Shakespeare: "Cowards die many times before their deaths; the valiant never taste of death but once."
Mantle gives examples of everyday acts of courage that you may never have thought of. It causes the reader to look at life in a more pro-active way. If you were to read only one book on courage, this should be it.
