Somewhat Dated, But Still Interesting

If you like New Orleans and enjoy the food that's integral to laissez les bons temps rouler, this book is a gem. There are short histories of nine of the city's most famous restaurants (a couple of which have closed since the book was published in 1976). There are bookooodles of recipes in the remainder of the book, organized by type ("Soups," "Meat," etc.). However, the recipes are not detailed - they include ingredients and a short description of how to put it all together - so this is not a book a new cook would feel comfortable with. There are black and white photos of local personalities and the restaurants mentioned, but there are no pictures accompanying the recipes.

Cajun Cooking

Ms. Stanforth's lovely cookbook has been around for a long time now. I had a copy when it first came out and made many wonderful recipes mostly for dinner parties. My guests always wanted recipes! Not one to be selfish about something I didn't create I sometimes gave my copy away or lent it and forgot it. I am now on my fourth copy. And my old favorites hold up well. And the restaurants themselves, do also. Having been teethed on the novels of Frances Parkinson Keyes I had an affinity for Creole culture and mores. And her classic "Dinner at Antoines" was a treasure after dining there at age 4 and knocking over my glass of milk, much to the consternation of my mother. That was in 1945 during their centenary! Having been back there in later years and visiting other dining rooms and restaurants Ms. Stanforth covers in her cookery text, the recipes seem to come alive as they now have a context much richer than before. A treasure for any cook's reading/recipe collection!
