This book is dated and contains many errors of fact and is not objective

In the course of my research for my novel, An Honorable German, which leads off with the Battle of the Rio Plata, I read every book on the Graf Spee. Dudley Pope was a fine writer but this book is dated and contains a number of errors. It was originally published in 1957 in the U.S. under the title "Graf Spee: the Life and Death of a Raider.". It was published a year earlier in England under the title, "The Battle of the River Plate". The current publisher just switched the titles. It is the exact same book as published in the U.S. by Lippincott in 1957. It is outrageous, to put it mildly, that the publisher is passing this off as a contemporary book when it was actually written more than forty-three years ago.

Mr. Pope only interviewed the Royal Navy participants in the battle. He did not interview anyone from the Graf Spee, although most of the officers survived the war as did almost all of the men. This is hagiography, not history. Mr. Pope was a good story teller so read this book for entertainment only because it is not an objective history of the battle or of the raiding cruise of the Graf Spee.

What Pope and all other writers on the battle have missed is that the biggest issue for Captain Langsdorff was the motor mounts on the auxiliary engines were cracked--badly--as were some on the main engines. They could not be fixed without some months in a dockyard. Thus, it was entirely possible that the auxiliary engines, which supplied electricity and other power to the ship, could simply break loose from their iron beds and obvioulsy that would have been a disaster in the middle of a battle. Several of the main engines had severely cracked motor mounts as well. This fact doesn't show up in any of the histories of the battle which is just sloppiness on the part of the authors.

In the early 1980s, I corresponded with Jurgen Wattenburg, the Senior Navigation Officer of the Graf Spee, and he told me the above facts in writing. He was puzzled that various authors, all of them British at that time, were writing books, or had written books, about the Graf Spee and the battle of the River Plate and no one had ever contacted him or any of the officers who had survived the war. He was the highest ranking survivor among the officers and one of the most experienced.

He was a very bitter man so I say with caution that it was his opinion, which is hardly unbiased, that the best book on the Graf Spee and the Rio Plata is: Panzerschiff Admiral Graf Spee by F.W. Rasenack. The author was a young officer on the Graf Spee and just died last year in Uruguay where he had retired. Unfortunately the book has never been translated into English which is quite unfortunate.

Gripping Writing Style!!!!

This is absolutely the best written book on naval warfare that i have ever read!

Pope's writing style is so fluid, full of analogies, and taking the complex and mechanical naval warfare terminology and tactics so that any reader can understand as well as feel that edge-of-the-seat feeling of the battle!

Not only is the author's work incredible, this happens to be a critical and interesting event of the first few months of WW2. If Graf Spee had been able to sink Exeter, Ajax, and Achilles relatively unscathed, the domino effect that surface raiders have, so artfully described by the author would have been enormous, perhaps lightening the weight of British power on all the other German naval exploits, U-Boats, Bismarck, Norway and the Blucher, Tirpitz....

I highly recommend this book to any person interested in WW2, it will grab and hold your attention. Also a very sincere salut to the dynamic writing of the author, particularly the part where Spee and Exeter first sight each other!

initial naval battles in ww 2

What this book doesn't consider enough is the tactical situation. This book is a nice description of the battle, but it loses a bit in the interpretation of the issues. This book was originally written in 1957, 18 years after the battle described, but it is too close to the battle to understand Langsdorff's position as a ship that, if found, would likely be chased down. Thus, he had to sink those that found him, whoever they were. larger or smaller, and that understanding is crucial to understand the Battle of the River Platte. Author infers that Spee's commander could have let these warship targets go by. It was widely said that the Graf Spee was faster than almost anything larger (and therefore could successfully escape), and more powerful than anything smaller (and therefore could successfully wipe them out). But, that doesn't make a good tactical situation, since the faster enemy ships could keep away from you yet keep you in touch and call in their bigger buddies, with you having no way to escape those smaller ships views of where you were in the oceans once you, as a raider, had been located. So, the Graf Spee had to attack any enemy warships it saw, instead of holding that it was more powerful than the smaller enemy ships and faster than the larger enemy ships. The Graf Spee was too slow to escape the smaller ships that could call in larger ships, and in fact that is what happened in the end. Capt Langsdorff of the Graf Spee did the most he could in his tactics with the ship he was given. He was also very gallant in saving many lives on the merchant ships he attacked.

Other than this single issue of tactics, this is a masterful book of the battle, and worthy of purchase or, as in my case, buying another copy so that I could reread the battle as it happened, while keeping my thoughts of the tactics (see above) to one side. No matter one's tactics, what happened happened, and this book describes it well.

The Transcendental Doctrine of Elements

First Part.
Transcendental Aesthetic.

Whatever the process and the means may be by which knowledge reaches its objects, there is one that reaches them directly, and forms the ultimate material of all thought, viz. intuition (Anschauung). This is possible only when the object is given, and the object can be given only (to human beings at least) through a certain affection of the mind (Gemüth).

This faculty (receptivity) of receiving representations (Vorstellungen), according to the manner in which we are affected by objects, is called sensibility (Sinnlichkeit).

Objects therefore are given to us through our sensibility. Sensibility alone supplies us with intuitions (Anschauungen). These intuitions become thought through the understanding (Verstand), and hence arise conceptions (Begriffe). All thought therefore must, directly or indirectly, go back to intuitions (Anschauungen), i.e. to our sensibility, because in no other way can objects be given to us.

The effect produced by an object upon the faculty of representation (Vorstellungsfähigkeit), so far as we are affected by it, is called sensation (Empfindung). An intuition (Anschauung) of an object, by means of sensation, is called empirical. The undefined object of such an empirical intuition is called phenomenon (Erscheinung).

In a phenomenon I call that which corresponds to the sensation its matter; but that which causes the manifold matter of the phenomenon to be perceived as arranged in a certain order, I call its form.

Now it is clear that it cannot be sensation again through which sensations are arranged and placed in certain forms. The matter only of all phenomena is given us a posteriori; but their form must be ready for them in the mind (Gemüth) a priori, and must therefore be capable of being considered as separate from all sensations.

I call all representations in which there is nothing that belongs to sensation, pure (in a transcendental sense). The pure form therefore of all sensuous intuitions, that form in which the manifold elements of the phenomena are seen in a certain order, must be found in the mind a priori. And this pure form of sensibility may be called the pure intuition (Anschauung).

An effective compilation, with all of the essays necessary for a basic understanding of Kant.

With a thourough reading of this text, it is entirely possible to extract, not just the jist, but a fundamental understanding of the philosophy of Kant. Although it is true that no compilation of writings, which is forced to express the ideas of a philosopher such as Kant in a manageable way, can provide an understanding required for a masters or doctoral thesis, the Basic Writings of Kant is translated in such a way and contains the necessary essays for higher-level undergraduate understanding.

By examining the development of Kant's ideas throughout each essay, it is possible to understand the unity of metaphysical, empirical, and moral concepts in a digestable and useful way. Although one may see fault in Kant's philosophy regarding any of these facets, this text provides the means for an understanding of Kant's philosopy and solid ground by which to dispute his ideas.

One distinction, which might be useful in reading this text, is to note that the essay "Critique of Practical Reason" is better understood as the "Critique of (Pure) Practical Reason". It should be understood that Kant felt that the boundaries in which both practical and theoretical reason, lie is within the limits of the mind itself.

Also, regarding Kant's chauvinism, a close reading of "What Is Englightenment?", might shed some light on those who seem to have heard what they wanted to hear in his referrence to the "fairer sex". Aside from that passage, I can not actually think of another example of his even mentioning gender differences. Feel free to correct me, if you can provide me with some new information, or something that I've forgotten.

Kant the philosophical revolutionary

This is an excellent survey of Kant's groundbreaking constributions to epistemology and moral philosophy. I would, however, support Karl Popper's observation that the best way to understand the transcendental idealism of Kant is to first study Schopenhauer. An ideal introduction to Schopenhauer (and Kant) is Bryan Magee's 'The Philosophy of Schopenhauer'. Then read Schopenhauer's 'On the Fourfold Root of Principle of Sufficient Reason', and then his 'The World as Will and Representation'. Schopenhauer is a peerless prose stylist and conceptual architect and he explains the philosophy of Kant (and it's limitations) better than Kant does himself. Once you have familiarised yourself with Schopenhauer, Kant's comparatively opaque and desultory prose (with occasional flashes of brilliance) is readily accessible. Kant's staggering intellectual achievement in moving beyond the apparent epistemological dead end of Hume is sufficient motivation for making the effort to read the Critique of Pure Reason. In the other works in this volume Kant developed his (in my view)flawed moral philosophy, based as it is on the supposed sovereignty of reason over the will - with its famous 'catagorical imperative'. While this is less impressive than his epistemology, it is still interesting and well worth reading. The translations offered here are clear and the selections from Kant's works are judicious. Altogether a great book at a great price, which will richly reward the serious reader.

An Easy to Read Selection of Kant Writings

My review is more by accident then intentional logging on to write a review. While surfing around, I stumbled here to check out a couple of reviews and noticed some with astonishing errors; either due to a lack of writing a detailed review or just not understanding Kant's ideas. The problem may also lie in that anthologies don't carry the full selection of a person's arguments (although with one reviewer it is just an obvious case of silly ignorant ramblings)
Wood's book is readable and it is true that Kant is never an easy read, but neither are most Prussian Philosophers of the same era.
Whatever Kant's metaphysical faults are, he is not a relativist, but tried, although many have asserted unsuccessfully, to construct an objective moral framework on reason alone (although Kant did believe in God and asserted that the Christian religion was the closet to a true objective construct; however, that is precisely the problem of anthologies, because all they do is give one a snap shot of someone's work. Further, Kant asserted God as a practical necessity if humans were going to reach the highest good (summum bonum).
Lastly, is trying to limit the role of reason to make room for faith. He limits knowledge by demonstrating that reason belongs in the empirical realm (phenomenal) and the things-in-itself are actually in the noumenal world beyond the reach of the senses. For someone as lengthy as Kant, short reviews cannot do justice. The sordid story of American suburbia

This is a readable and enlightening history of the American phenomena of suburbia, from the mid-1800s to the 1970s. It clearly shows how the government and communities subsidized builders and developers, who, in turn, left it up to taxpayers to support the cost of new streets, sewers, schools, and all the other infrastructure needed to support ever-expanding suburbs. The book could have done a more thorough job of explaining how the funds that went to suburbs ended up leaving cities impoverished, with the result that schools, security, and infrastructure suffered. Also, the author could have described the terrible environmental toll as thousands of square miles of McMansion ghettos devoured farms, deserts and forests. The housing orgy of the 2000-2007 era was an extreme manifestation of the trend that has been ongoing since the 1800s.

Contemporary Overview

The author did in an excellent job in presenting a variety of issues. In my opinion though, her stronger suit is the historical aspect rather than some of later subjects she delves into in the text. It was refreshing to have a feminist critique, but this is more developed in the first part of the text and less interesting or less confined to the latter chapters. Paraphrasing another reviewer, there are parts of the text which begin to feel mechanical, again the latter part of the text.

Despite stylistic critiques, I believe the text to be very good and importantly, recent in scope.

The American Suburb in History

Building Suburbia is a capable synthesis of historical and recent scholarship on the development of the suburbs in America. Hayden, a professor of architecture and urbanism and professor of American Studies at Yale, knows what she is talking about. It was clear to me that this book is written for a general, rather then specialized audience.
Hayden's writting style is easy to understand, and she provides multiple in text illustrations and photographs to illuminate the text. The book tracks the historical development of suburbs in time (the subtitle is "Green Fields and Urban Growth 1820-2000.) She starts with "Borderlands", then covers "Picturesque Enclaves", "Streetcar Buildouts", "Mail-Order and Self-Built Suburbs", "Sitcom Subrurbs", "Edge Nodes" and "Rural Fringes". This historical approach is book ended by an introduction with two chapters and a conclusion with two chapters.
Hayden includes excellent end notes and a selected bibliography that is worthwhile to have on your shelf. Since this book was written in 2003, the bibliography is chock full of RECENT books on urban studies that allow the student or casual reader to follow up in any number of directions.
Worth checking out.

The stories in 334 revolve loosely around a government housing project at 334 East 11th Street in New York City in the 2020s. The project's inhabitants are universally poor, often jobless, sometimes squalid. Some are happy, others angry, depressed, or just numb. The stories study their hopes and disappointments, and all are deeply introspective.

The early 21st-century setting might, in the hands of another author, be only a guise, a shortcut to making a world that's more gritty, shabby, and used up than ours. But Disch's future is thoroughly imagined, and he's adept at dropping in details of his characters' lives that are commonplace to them but jarring to us. It might be something as simple as going to the kitchen to "mix up a glass of milk." Occasionally it's radical, as in the case of Millie, who wants to have a baby but also keep her career. The answer? The child is gestated in an artificial womb and Millie's husband gets mammary implants.

Though American, Disch is closely associated with the UK's New Wave movement, and these stories reflect the New Wave emphasis on character above ideas. He's also a well-known poet, and in 334 you'll find some of the most lyrical science fiction written. --Brooks Peck

Perhaps Disch's "best" science fiction book.

I'm fairly high on most of Disch's fiction, but I think this book is not accorded the respect it deserves. There are several reasons for this, I think.
1. It is billed as a novel, but it is more a collage or mosaic novel, constructed out of a series of connected stories and novellas that Disch published around 1971-72. Publication was mostly in _New Worlds Quarterly_ and Samuel R. Delany's _Quark_, original anthologies geared towards New Wave fiction that did not receive incredibly widespread distribution.
2. The long section originally published as the novella "334" is written in a decidedly non-linear style--the narrative jumps back and forth in time. This can be a little unsettling if not read with care and attention. As a whole, the work is fairly "literary" (for the tastes of science fiction readers, anyway).
3. The story is at times fairly down beat, if not actually depressing. This isn't a "pink-and-white bunny rabbit" story. :-)
So it's not a conventional novel. Still, looked at as a collection of stories, this book is great. The stories "Angouleme," "Bodies," "Emancipation," and "334" are each among Disch's finest work at this length. Highly recommended for those with a taste for this sort of thing.

literature and dystopia

This is one of Disch's best books, yet I do not feel it often receives the respect it deserves. At least in part, that's because it's not a conventional novel, but rather a mosaic novel constructed out of a series of stories he published back in 1971-72 in places like _New Worlds Quarterly_, _Quark_, and _New Dimensions_.

Also to consider is that the overall effect of this portrait of a speculative New York in the near future is fundamentally dypstopian. It is pretty clearly a projection of social trends evident at the time of writing wedded to a few what-if speculations. The writing is full of energy, but some of the characters give the impression that Disch was indulging in a bit of Schadenfreude at the expense of his hapless collection of fictional losers. It's entertaining, but it can be a bit down-beat, I fear.

Looked at as a collection of longer stories, the book is impressive in its own right. The enigmatic "Angouleme," an exquisitely-written child-chiller tale, is maybe the best example of Disch's short fiction. The black-humor "Bodies" contains some outright slapstick comedy, and a basic speculative premise that seems prescient in the light of the AIDS epidemic of our own times. The story "Emancipation" is a marvelously observed and imagined story, whose fundamental premise still strikes me as somewhat wonky.

The long, non-linear novella, "334," that closes the book is the most challenging work I think Disch has ever written. The writing is interesting and lucid, but the sequence-and-order of the episodes requires some time to assimilate, and the fragmentary nature of the episodes is reminiscent (in a way) of the paste-up method employed by Burroughs in _Naked Lunch_ or that used by people like J. G. Ballard. It's a rewarding work, but it may not be to the taste of fans of traditional sf.

Finally, taken as a whole, the mosaic effect created by all these stories -- interlocking in locale and sometimes in characters -- produces in the end a unified effect of Disch's vision of the possible future he imagined. It's a dark vision, but it carries absolute conviction and integrity. It's a first-rate book, and it deserves to be read.

The book 334 is a journey into the future, where babies are grown in bottles and promiscuity is no longer "promiscuous." But it is also liquid: the scenes and years jump back and forth, and it can be hard to keep track of. I thought this book was very developed; the character of the different mini-stories were all connected in different ways, and the plots shared similar themes. It was very entertaining to read, and it really made me think about what the world will be like if society continues on the path it is currently on. Thomas Disch wrote this book in the seventies, but it still seems like a plausible scenario for the future (unlike 1984 must have seemed in the sixties), though perhaps not quite as early as Disch envisioned. All in all, I think it is a very entertaining and enlightening book.

Brilliant Scholarship

The Song of Songs is a set of sexually explicit poems set in the heart of the Bible. In this brilliant study presented as part of the respected Anchor Bible Series of Bible commentaries Marvin Pope has explored those poems using the kind of mastery of the Hebrew language and literature of the Levant one would expect from someone holding his position as Professor of Northwest Semitic Languages at Yale University.

Throughout history Biblical interpreters have used allegory and many other literary devices to conceal The Song's erotic content. For example the poems' detailed celebration of a lover's breasts has been interpreted as a reference to the Old Testament heroes Moses and Aaron. This kind of rewriting has misrepresented the material and deceived uninformed readers. By contrast Pope presents the text with integrity and having done so is able to trace its actual cultural roots as well as demonstrate its social and religious applications in its time and throughout history.

Using his unique skills Pope has written a lively and fascinating introduction to a little known book of the Bible that also introduces the reader to an even lesser known thread of religious history while laying the groundwork for a fresh appreciation for the Bible as a whole. Based on his analysis of its content,for example, Pope reveals links between The Song and elements of Tantric poetry that suggest The Song had a South Indian origin. He also shows a correlation between specific images presented in The Song and sexually charged fertility rituals widely practiced in Israel and the rest of the Levant. Pope's study includes an examination of The Song's role in history with a focus on how it inspired the development of ceremonial observances in both Judaism and Christianity that gave physical expression to its erotic language.

The question that hangs over the book is how and why did poems like these ever find their way into sacred scripture? Pope doesn't answer that question directly but he does remind his readers that the ancient rabbis taught that the whole world was created and the Bible written for the purpose of presenting The Song of Songs. Perhaps the value and message of The Song is found in the way it challenges narrow and unimaginative renderings of Biblical faith. As presented by Pope The Song serves as a reminder that the Bible is rooted in the exotic cultures of Asia and draws insights from many sources and influences beside the narrow stream of Israel's history. But on a deeper level, under Pope's expert examination these poems come alive as the expression of a love whose depth demanded passionate language. In that sense The Song of Songs can be read as the Old Testament expression of the same theme that is presented in the New Testament through the equally passionate and disturbing image of the cross. Whatever conclusions one draws from his work Marvin Pope has written a book that both stirs the mind and inspires the heart.The Ethics of Chaos

A Mission of Gender Reconciliation

After reading this text I came to the conclusion that Song of Songs is *the* most missiological book in the Old Testament. Pope translates the text directly, free of the normal curtailing of language that occurs in English translations in order to protect pseudo-Puritan American sensibilities. As such it is a much more moving, poetic, and graphic collection of poems. "My lover thrust his "hand" through the "hole", and my inwards seethed for him." The description of part of the man is not "slabs of ivory", but "an ivory tusk". In this focus on being more true to the original text Pope reveals some key aspects of the Hebrew mindset which we could all learn from. Far from the traditional Christian perspective of these latter days of downplaying sexuality, of thinking it as somehow unclean though never saying so outright, God's desire is for us to revel in it and celebrate it. He created us as holistic beings, the only true amphibians, being both spiritual and physical, and thus capable of enjoying what he created to a much greater degree. The author of Song of Songs revealed years before contemporary psychology that sexuality is an integral part of eros love, not to be denied, but celebrated.

Throughout the translation one also gets the distinct impression of the empowerment of the woman. While this is certainly present in other translations, it comes through all the more clearly in Pope.

"Our sister is young
And breasts she has none.
What will we do for our sister
On the day she is bespoken?
If she be a wall,
We will build on her a silver buttress.
If she be a door,
We will close her with a cedar board."

"I am a wall,And my breasts are like towers.
Thus have I become in his eyes
As one producing peace."

While the woman's brothers would seek to constrain and control her, she speaks out and states that she has the control, turning the wall metaphor on it's head. While they would belittle her physical manifestations of womanhood, she proclaims to all the world that she is all woman, and beautiful, betraying a clear confidence in herself and her body.

Repeatedly the man and woman within these poems show their care for each other- not just for their bodies, and not just for their souls, but for the entire being, as one. In Pope one sees clearly here an image, a foretaste, of true gender reconciliation, as existed once before the fall, and was not to be fully realized until Christ came and sat down at a well in the desert. The both encourage each other to grow, and love each other fully as beautiful in entirety. Since Song of Songs is a collection of poems, it tells not a story so much of what is, but like all great poetry, of what might be. It does not seem to describe the reality of gender interaction at the time it was written, but what was yearned for, for what might be. This it does beautifully, such that one thirsts for this reality as one reads it. And I believe this is what makes it missiological- it preaches a reality that one day could be, will be, should be, though the author can have no awareness at that time of what Jesus will come to offer.

One would wish that Pope's translation was available without the commentary, that it would be read more often by the layman who might be stymied by the length of the work. But the commentary is indeed excellent as well. After the translation, Pope goes on to present alternative scenarios for understanding Song of Songs, and then an exhaustive and impressive line by line analysis of the entire book. His analysis adds greatly to a thorough appreciation of this inspired work.

outstanding reference

I have been working on a research paper on the Song of Songs and feel extremely fortunate to have found Pope's reference. It is exhaustive, interesting and helpful. The most amazing section is his bibliography and list of translations of publications on the Song of Songs, dating back to ancient manuscripts. Excellent.
