Cities In Flight is just about the best SF book ever written

I first read this story when it was published in four separate novels that my uncle gave me. At that time, the first book, "They Shall Have Stars" was titled "Year 2018". I was enchanted with the story then and have since purchased the one volume edition which I have read many times and want to read again. It opens with a technician using a virtual presence helmet on an orbiting station above Jupiter working a robot on an eleven mile long, six mile high, four mile wide ice bridge constructed on an asteroid set down on the hard surface of Jupiter, beset by hurricanes beyond imagining. I would love to see a well done CG 3D movie of when the city of Scranton, PA, encapsulated in its spindizzy field, departs Earth. Or when the city of New York takes the planet He across the great rift, and when they use He to ram and obliterate the outlaw city of IMT bent on attacking and subjugating an unsuspecting Earth, thereby becoming galactic criminals and having to flee to the Magellanic Clouds to escape Earth law. While there they discover that the “big crunch” is coming, the reversal of the “big bang”, and how they cope with it. This was written before the big bang was even conceived by scientists. The visuals in the book would relegate “Star Wars” to a pathetic joke on a par with the Ed Wood style of movie making. It’s an epic to shame the Lord Of The Rings trilogy. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

Cities Flying to the Stars

This is a science fiction classic of flying cities, wandering around the galaxy in search of work. I like the concept of flying cities, but my idea of this, if I were to write the book, would be cities taking off from Earth and settling on other planets, not for work, but to start new civilizations. In other words, they would fly only once, and go to their new world, all over the Milky Way galaxy. At the end of the book, one finally does, but for a different reason.
That said, I find this to be a classic worth reading. In some ways, it is dated, with vacuum tubes in a computer and some women still adhering to the old stereotypes, but if you can overlook this, you will find it fascinating.
There are four books in all in this series, teratology if you will, and they were not written in chronological order, but the book has been edited for consistency. My recommendation is that you skip the first book, “They Shall Have Stars,” and begin with the second, “A Life For the Stars,” for that is when the story really begins.
The reason for skipping the first book is that the main plot is a group of engineers building a bridge on Jupiter. Now with the way Jupiter is, a gas giant that is literally thousands of pounds per square inch, that can crush any object, along with winds blowing at thousands of kilometers per hour, this makes little sense, and you may find it boring. That may be discoveries adding to the story, but you can find them in the other three without missing anything. Also, in “Earthman Come Home,” there is a synopsis of the years leading to the present (in the book) story.
The story really begins in the second book where Scranton, Pennsylvania takes off for the stars, powered by spindizzies, an antigravity machine that can lift entire cities and retain the surrounding atmosphere. Chris McFord, a country boy, is impressed (kidnapped) and taken on board the city, where he adjusts. The read purpose, with Earth exhausted of all its minerals, is to fly amongst the stars, looking for work and making money, for there is an interstellar economy. After a while, McFord is transferred to Manhattan, the only part of New York that left Earth, where he becomes a navigator. It is there we meet mayor John Amalfi, who becomes the main character of the rest of the book/series (all four books are in one volume).
Also, although spindizzies can propel cities at faster than light speeds, the time between stars is still great, but anti-aging drugs have been discovered, so people can live for literally hundreds of years.
In Earthman Come Home, McFord is out of the picture, and the cities start to rebel, some even turning against each other. There are renegade cities, some being pirates, others taking control of worlds and establishing tyrannies. The Earth Police come into being, not only to protect trade routes for these cities, but also to enforce laws and deal with the renegade, going as far as destroying a few.
All these cities converge in orbit around a star, in an area known as The Jungle, with plans to attack their home planet, Earth, for freedom against its rule.
In “The Triumph of Time” a vortex is discovered in the emptiness of intergalactic space, with hydrogen atoms coming from out of nowhere, and anti-hydrogen atoms also coming from an opposite vortex. This is creation, and supposedly the creator (“God”) is discovered. There are chapters here that do smack of not only an anti-matter universe, but of mysticism, and the end of the world. There is a lot here concerning creation and destruction, and Amalfi and other characters are involved, and this will get you thinking.
As I stated, this book should be regarded as a trilogy, but a trilogy worth reading. I myself, with the concept of flying cities, would have written a totally different story, but focus on James Blish’s version here, for the plot is exciting and suspenseful, and the end of the book/series requires a lot of thinking.

This is an ambitious future history that revolves around the interesting idea of interstellar spacecraft that are designed like cities rather than the traditional enclosed rocket. It pulls in a lot of genres in the process: cold war thriller, Heinleinesque juvenile, philosophical discussion of how to face death. The author's broad science background also enables him to dramatize exotic alien environments from the turbulent surface of Jupiter to a galactic rift .
The sweep is impressive. The problem -- due to the fact that Blish pasted together stories written over a period of years -- is numerous inconsistencies in the plotline. One important character abruptly disappears because the stories were written out of order and Blish hadn't planned on the character when he wrote the "later" stories. If one can get used to that, it's an exciting read.
