Well illustrated introduction to the vikings

First edited in 1976 this is a fine and inexpensive way for a young reader to learn some interesting facts regarding the Vikings with a good visual aid due to the remarkable art of Richard Hook among other artists.
You’ll find short and assertive information regarding the geographical origin of the Vikings, reasons for the commercial expansion and raiding trips, daily life, metal working and craftsmanship, the longboats and how were they built, the role of women, funerary rituals, short bios of remarkable Vikings, maps and a comparative history.
There are several mistakes that should be corrected (at least in my edition of the book). Jarls are socially superior to the Karls (the book is incorrect placing the Karls below the king and above the Jarls in the social hierarchy), the IX century Vikings weren’t definitely the better equipped, disciplined and trained armies of their time (Byzantines and Abassids had far more professional and well-disciplined armies, for example), among other minor issues.
It is still a useful book for a quick and visually entertaining way to introduce someone to the world of the Vikings.
