A sensitive portrayal of a master actor
By Fred Houpt
Strange as it seems to me, I have actually seen very few Laughton films. The Mutiny on the Bounty I only recently watched completely. I have deeply enjoyed his depiction of Rembrandt. There is much to admire and I found Higham's book very fulfilling in that regard. When you consider that this was published in 1976, the level of open and complete honesty is quite a surprise. The person who sets that tone right from the start is Laughton's wife, Elsa Lanchester, who wrote a very moving introduction. The first thing that the reader takes notice of is her unabashed discussion about Laughton's sexuality, stating in clear terms that from the beginning of their long relationship she was made aware of his homosexuality. Albeit, that this revelation initially came as a shock and was full of all kinds of high drama, with Laughton very narrowly escaping the destructive pillaging he would have endured had his secret been made public at that time. What ensued was a mutual respect, understanding and in their platonic way (so this book depicts), a deeply loving relationship. In all fairness, there are other sources that speculate that she had become pregnant from Laughton and either lost the child or had it aborted. Elsa does not reveal this in her notes.

Laughton and Elsa appeared together to great effect in many films. They both made quite handsome incomes which they shared all throughout their long marriage. This afforded them the luxury of buying and selling many homes, apartments and cottages both in Great Britain and the United States. Charles eventually became a U.S. citizen. Laughton won the Oscar for best actor in his role as King Henry the 8'th, in 1934. Two years later he was again nominated for best actor in the film "The Mutiny on the Bounty". He was equally powerful and effective on stage and in movies. He sought out new plays and delved into the master works of Shaw and Shakespeare. He realized great success by performing one man shows, which consisted of Charles reading extracts from famous poems and speeches and extracts from novels. One of the most famous of those speeches was Lincoln's Gettysburg Address, which Charles read to spellbound audiences all over North America. His oratory skills could hold an audience in breathless attention as he read portions of the Bible.

His acting style, for me at least, suggests that he was probably the first method actor; this being something that he intuitively made his way into, following the dictates of how a piece moved him emotionally. On top of this emotive style sat a very strong intellect that brought a huge amount of historical material to each role. Charles loved to throw himself into roles as if working towards a PhD in that subject. He would invariably show up on the set knowing more about the historical background than either the director or in some cases the script writers. He was often very temperamental, argumentative, caustic and just plain difficult for the director to direct. He also had a lifelong insecurity about himself that drove him to manias of panic attacks. Charles had a conflicted psyche that was always on the verge of consuming him from within. What seemed to have saved him was work, constant work. And so he leapt from one project into another. When he finally settled more in the United States he ended up taking young actors under his wing, teaching them elocution and other acting lessons out of his own home. He was deeply admired by those whose acting lives he touched.

Charles was in and out of any number of long and short term male relationships, none of which gave him the soul quieting fulfillment that might have been. Having to hide his sexuality in an age when open homosexuality was universally shunned, he struggled to keep up the pretences. However, he also enjoyed many shared loves, interests and passions with Elsa. On many levels they seemed to be kindred spirits; except physically. She knew what he was creatively capable of and she supported and encouraged him to the last days of his life. She loved his genius but was often left with an empty space in herself that was the physical longing that Charles could not or would not fill. She tolerated his sexual choices and he accepted that she would turn to other men to fill her physical cravings.

Higham made good use of letters and many anecdotes from Elsa. There were so many conflicts with so many actors and directors that Charles' life reads as one tempest after another. And yet, he managed to create so many remarkable characterizations. There were failures, where the public did not appreciate a film and none was more surprising than his directorial debut with the black and white horror story "The Night of the Hunter". These days the film is considered a towering achievement, deserving its place beside Wells' "Citizen Kane". I came away from this book with a much better understanding of a complex, brilliant, troubled master actor. He left behind such a rich body of work, all of it still so enticing, exciting and entertaining.

Charles Laughton

After years of enjoying old movies and knowing the different actors/actresses, Charles Laughton is at the top of my list! I have several of his movies on DVD. One of my most favorites of his movies is "Ruggles of Red Rock." It is one of the funnies movies I have seen. I learned from his book that he was very ill during the first part of the movie, yet you would never know it. I highly recommend this book to those who love the 'old' movie actors. To know them, their likes and dislikes and to get to know and love their movies is to know more about them. In this case, Charles Laughton is at the top!!!!
