I wish I had saved my money. There's a reason why this is out of print. There is almost no training information in it of any kind, much less about guard dogs. What information it does have will produce a dangerous, unstable dog.

Sincere, idealistic, dramatic... exceptional for the young

These books sold very, very well for the author in what can only be described as an impossibly crowded genre. It seems every fantasy novelist attempts, at some point, a re-telling and definitive edition of the Arthurian myth. It is the only subject more trampled and copied than Tolkien. It is also the genre that lapses in to the most astonishing absurdities. Lawhead, with these three books (Taliesin, Merlin, and Arthur) has contributed something very relevant and very new to the genre. It gives the myth a burst of idealism and Christianity not seen since Tennyson with the Celtic traditions not seen since the Mabinogion. Sadly, with the publication of the latter three--and far lesser novels (Pendragon, Grail, and Avallon) the series is much damaged and diminished. We believe that Lawhead would've been far better served to let the trilogy stand on its own where it's not so intimidating and probably would've enjoyed subsequent reprinting. As it stands, our rating for this book is slightly tarnished by these later publications and endanger the proud work of a very, very good author.

WHO SHOULD READ:

Readers who enjoyed Tolkien a great deal and who read Terry Brooks, Robert Jordan, and others searching for that same idealism will come closest to finding it here with Lawhead. Readers who enjoyed Marion Zimmerman Bradley's feminized version of the legend in The Mists of Avalon will find this work operating as a kind of opposite: Bradley employing the traditional pagan religious elements and feminism while re-working the French side of the myth while Lawhead invoking Christian theology and masculinity in t the Celtic side of the myth. They are very interesting to read together. These books are excellent choices for teenagers for whom idealism is second nature. Oddly, readers deeply impressed with the idealism of the people living in "The Land" in The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, the Unbeliever will find themselves deeply compelled by this work.

WHO SHOULD AVOID:

Scholars of Arthuriana, those more versed in Malory, Monmouth, Eschenbach, de Troyes, and even Tennyson, will probably be a bit disappointed. They are going to be much less impressed with what they might regard as overly-dramatic prose and much more sensitive to the liberties--particularly the Christian liberties--that Lawhead takes with the story. Certainly those readers who are inclined to much more cynical writing styles of the late 20th and 21st century--people who enjoy the subtle undercurrents and "un-heroism" of more modern irreverent works--will probably become bored and irritable with the constant nobility (just as they would become bored with Tennyson's Idylls of the King). People looking to investigate the actual history and evolution of the mythology would not be well-served by reading this book but should look to the actual source material of Malory and perhaps some of the earlier Celtic works such as Monmouth and The Alliterative Morte d'Arthure.

Immortal in Lawhead's writing

I started out the Pendragon Cycle with "Taliesin", as was the chronological thing to do. After that came "Merlin" - and maybe it was the anticipation after reading "Taliesin", or maybe it was only the fascination I've held for Merlin ever since the first time I discovered Arthurian legend...whatever it was, I absolutely fell in love with this book.
Now that I've finished reading the cycle, I can say without a doubt that "Merlin" surpasses all others in the series. Arthur is a genius, Llenlleawg a talented warrior, Pelleas a loyal companion...but Merlin is REAL. Merlin has gifts and flaws; he has a distinct personality that makes him come to life as a flesh and bone human (however immortal). For example, I found him to be vain and more snobbish as the story progressed! He is definately one of the most well-written characters I've ever read.
After finishing this book in less than four hours, I eagerly acquired the rest of the Pendragon series, thinking that they would live up to the standard of "Merlin", if not surpass it. I should have known that such a perfect book full of plot and characterization is one of a kind. However, to my delight, Merlin's character only develops more in depth as the Pendragon series continued on. After all, Merlin's name is etched in legend...but in Lawhead's writing, he lives.

Exactly how awesome Merlin is.

You know, I could really dig into this book and pull out stuff like the symbolism of the hawk, and color symbolism of the golden eyes. I could give you the signifigance of the choice of diction, tell you about the underlying themes, but you don't want to hear about that. Merlin is the son of Taliesin the bard and Charis the Fair Folk princess. Merlin spends most of the year with his mother on Ynys Avallach and the summers with his grandparents in their caer training with the warriors and the bards. His father's people call him Myrddyn (pronounced Mur- then). The plot details his childhood and how he grows to be a warrior and a bard, and his life as he deals with his immortality. There are plenty of battle scenes for those of you who like that stuff, and also a bit of romance here and there for those of you who like *that* stuff. Lawhead paints realistic and vivid pictures of life in Celtic Britian. The character developement is nothing short of incredible. There are stories that you read, and then there are stories that you experience. This is one of those stories you experience. The story is so concrete, you feel yourself a part of the narrative. Words connot describe the emotions this book conjures. It is an incredible piece of literature. Read. And experience the wonder, the romance, and the battles of...Merlin.

The Revolution Lived Through

Revolutions do not usually come cheap--and certainly the American Revolution did not. The eight-year war that secured it is conservatively estimated to have claimed some 25,000 American lives--the percentage-wise equivalent, today, of 3.1 million citizens. (There was huge carnage for the British, too, of course, plus substantial casualty counts for allied Europeans and Native Americans.) Yet even as we take in these staggering numbers, the true human cost remains a bloodless shadow. As Stalin gruesomely but aptly put it, one death is a tragedy, a million ... is a statistic.
This is a nexus where historical fiction can profoundly enhance our grasp of historical reality--and one of the greatest novels of the Revolution has happily just been reissued, with a new introduction by its prolific author, as an electronic book. Thomas Fleming's Liberty Tavern sold a million copies when it was originally published in the bicentennial year, 1976. Its themes are, if anything, even more urgent and relevant today.
Fleming's fictional middle-class New Jersey family seems at first very familiar: the father's a widower and the hard-working proprietor of a prospering public accommodation that serves as a social focus for miles around; his two much loved but quarrelsome stepchildren are in their late adolescence and chafing to be free of all adult supervision. This story's no set-up for a television drama, however: it begins uneasily on January 1, 1776--amid universal trepidation about the future.
Liberty Tavern pulls the reader deeply into the reality of a community that will spend years in upheaval, uncertain of the outcome to the last, often at war with itself as much as with a foreign oppressor. The eponymous hostelry's respected owner, Jonathan Gifford, is a former British soldier, somewhat hobbled by a knee injury, who for the last decade has immersed himself in building his business, his family, and his locality. Experienced in battle, he views with deep apprehension the cocky assertions of many of his neighbors that Britain can be defeated without difficulty by righteous patriots. He withholds his counsel when others maintain with equal glibness that the king's forces can never be defeated and that surrendering is the only sane course. Virtually everyone around concurs that British policy is unjust and ought to be changed; but the disagreements over whether that would be possible and how the colonists might promote it turn increasingly acrimonious.
The public situation is further complicated for Gifford when his two stepchildren take opposite sides--passionately, neither evincing any toleration for Gifford's cautious prudence. Headstrong, seventeen-year-old Kate has taken up with the poetry-spouting, loyalist son of Gifford's best friend, and deems politics an outrageous imposition on her romantic life. The equally headstrong, nineteen-year-old lad Kemble, home to recuperate from pneumonia after two years at Princeton, is frantic to participate in the glory that he is positive will accrue to the American cause. All three struggle too with remorse and guilt and defensiveness over the memory of the recently deceased wife and mother--the sort of completely personal, apolitical concern that insistently obtrudes itself into everyone's real life despite all hell breaking loose.
Around this cauldron of personal and local difficulty breaks the American Revolutionary War. Only after Congress has declared independence does Gifford make his own declaration--by renaming the tavern. The boy finds it too little, too late; the girl disdains to perceive the enormous risk involved given the British army's proximity and the tavern's location on a major military highway. The best friend becomes estranged. As the years pass, Gifford and his children suffer greatly--physically, emotionally, economically--as control of their county passes abruptly not only between the Redcoats and the Congress, but among them, the loyalists, the state's militia, rogue vigilantes, and outright criminals.
While dozens of homes, barns, fields, and businesses are plundered and burnt by all sides, the tavern's needfulness to all factions contributes to its clearly precarious survival. The family's and the community's endurance is just as tenuous; determination and heroism are stretched taut to see them through.
As always, war brings out some of the best and lots of the worst in human beings--and it brings them out on both sides of the conflict. Many of the novel's most memorable characters and scenes involve honorable British enemies ... and truly despicable "patriots."
When the ships finally sail out of New York harbor, Kate and Kendall--eight years older, after all, and much wiser than they were on page one--are fully reconciled to their stepfather. But even as relief and hope offer breath to the gasping population ...

I read Liberty Tavern several years ago but enjoyed it more this time. Anyone who wants insight into both the events and emotions of the American Revolution will love this book. The only fault is all the misspellings and misplaced punctuation which must have occurred in the electronic conversion.

A Masterpiece Of Journalism!!! "To Be Or Not To Be?"

The book came out of an Atlantic assignment to cover the Juan Corona mass murder trial in Yuba City, California.

Kidder a contributing editor to The Atlantic, and back then in his youthful prime, later expressed his dissatisfaction with the book refusing to allow it to be reprinted, making this title a very sought after little treasure, almost always featured on the most wanted lists of true-crime collectors.

A real masterpiece of journalism, Kidder rode trains packed with farm workers, experiencing the cold and hunger, working along side them picking peaches and trying to understand their vulnerabilities. He spoke to the victims' families and attended the court proceedings even contemplating suspects other than the accused.

Juan Vallego Corona was a labour farm contractor, whom was accused of murdering migrant workers whom worked for him, by stabbing them and by bludgeoning and crushing their skulls as well as slashing them with a sharp instrument believed to be a machete. Some had also been shot.

Their bodies all discovered in graves strewn all over an orchard that Corona's men were working nearby, with the count believed to be much higher than the official last count of 25 bodies.

Corona was eventually convicted of 25 counts of first-degree murder and is currently serving 25 consecutive life sentences at Corcoran State Prison in California.

What followed with Kidder's book is a masterpiece that pointed out the incompetence on both sides of the case, investigators and attorneys alike.

Kidder although avoiding any personal judgement of Corona's guilt or innocence, clearly leaves us with the impression of whether there was in fact a miscarriage of justice after all, a trial botched up so incompetently, and with many errors to bring closure to one of the most horrific mass murder cases in the annals of American criminal history.

A brilliant book, although the author thinks otherwise. A must for every true book collector, crime related or not.

If you can pick up a nice clean copy with the dust jacket for round the $60.00 US mark, you've done well. I've seen some even fetch over the $100.00 US mark.

Bought this when discovered that it was Tracy Kidder's first. Was intrigued that he bought the rights and blocked further publication.

Very Accurate and Disturbing

I am from Yuba City, and I was eleven years old when the murders were discovered. In fact, one of Juan Corona's daughters was in my second grade class, and his wife and kids attended our church. I and my family knew many of the people who are mentioned in this book, including Father Bishop, who was our long-time parish priest. I left Yuba City behind a long time ago, but in the late 90s, I checked this book out of my local library, and all the memories came flooding back, twenty-five years later. The book is excellent and jibes with a lot of my memories of the case, and with the way the whole Yuba City-Marysville area was in the early 70s. It's a shame that Tracy Kidder won't let this book be re-released.

A FAMOUS HISTORY BY ONE OF THE FOREMOST PARTICIPANTS

Leon Trotsky (1879-1940; born Lev Davidovich Bronshtein) was a Russian Marxist revolutionary and theorist, Soviet politician, and the founder and first leader of the Red Army. As Stalin rose in the Soviet Union, Trotsky was removed from power, expelled from the Communist Party, deported from the Soviet Union, and assassinated on Stalin's orders.

His 1930 "History of the Russian Revolution" (of which this edition is an abridgement) was written in the early days of his exile, and contains separate volumes on The Overthrow of Tzarism; The Attempted Counter-Revolution; and The Triumph of the Soviets. Along the way it includes insightful portraits of figures such as the Tsar and Tsarina; Rasputin; Lenin (who he calls "the greatest figure in Russian political history" on pg. 482); Stalin, and many others.

He states early on that the book is unconcerned with "unrelated psychological researches," but will focus instead on "the great, moving forces of history, which are superpersonal in character." (Pg. 49) He notes sadly that although the February 1917 revolution was led by workers "educated for the most part by the party of Lenin," this leadership (although they proved sufficient to achieve victory in the insurrection) was not adequate to transfer immediately into the hands of the proletariat vanguard the leadership. (Pg. 147)

He observes that in the early years of the Communist party, opinions were not formed "even on the most basic questions" of the revolution. (Pg. 228)

He later sharply points out that not "one article, not one page of a diary, not one letter" from Stalin's views of the Revolution and subsequent events from the period of 1914-1917 has been published, and that in political biographies of figures like Stalin and Molotov, "the years of the war present a vacant space." (Pg. 277)

Interestingly (for those who believe in a "worldwide Socialist revolution"), he states that the chronic "revolutions" in South American countries have nothing in common with the Permanent Revolution of Socialism, and are in fact its very opposite. (Pg. 305)

He concludes the book with a hopeful tribute to the international significance for all mankind of the October revolution. (One wonders what he would have thought of Stalin's tyranny; hmmm...)

A Book that Reads like a Novel

As an undergraduate, my major was Political Science and I had two minors--History and English. In preparation for law school, I was told that I should have a minor in English based largely on writing. However, as an undergraduate, I came to prefer the classes on the English Novel, Short Stories, poetry and plays especially Shakespeare. Accordingly, when I purchased and read Leon Trotsky's book, "The Russian Revolution," I tended to view it as an exciting novel. This conception of the book has lasted to this day. I still think of the book as an exciting novel read for pleasure rather than study.

It is a good thing I am retired

Enjoyable and fascinating. Long time Tony Hillerman fan, I have now discovered a new series. It is a good thing I am retired, for I started reading and could not put it down. Went to bed about 4AM.

Has a unique twist at the end that is worthy of Agatha Christie.

This is a great book for people that like some humor with their mysteries. Although the titles of this series sound like the shaman is going to be the main protagonist, it doesn't work that way. There is a very humorous interaction between Charlie Moon, of the Tribal Police, who doesn't believe in magic, and his Grandmother who pretends she doesn't when around the priest but who sneaks out to confer with the local landspirit, a type of dwarf. The mystery is well thought out and kept interesting by the complex (but not TOO complex) characters. Of great importantce to me is that the characters also act within their characterization and motivations. This is a particular joy in this book where Charlie and his Grandmother are often working at cross purposes motive wize and a delightful weave of information back and forth as you move towards the ending. The grandmother in particular is sort of a ute 'maxine' with never a good word to say and a hillarious lineup of grumbles and mumbled complaints.

Sometimes old is just plain good!

My mother, who is in her 90s and still a great farm cook, mourned the loss of this cookbook, so recently I hunted up another copy on Amazon. All my life, I have eaten foods prepared from this book and other Farm Journal recipes, and to me they are just part of Country cooking.
As new information comes in, I incorporate it into the recipes and experiment with less fat and salt, different ingredients that increase nutrition, omission or substitution of less desirable or less available ingredients ... but the basics are there, and post-it notes help me keep track of ongoing thoughts without destroying the book. Yes, I have one too ... and I intend to keep it as long as I can cook. And now she can, too.

I purchased this edition in 1972 and used it until the pages stuck together and the binding disintegrated. This is the ultimate in comfort food cookery.

Wonderful Cookbook

I absolutely LOVE this cookbook! My dad purchased a copy around 1974, and it has been in the family ever since. I literally grew up on recipes from this book. The family copy is well-loved, as evidenced by the packing tape holding the spine together! I finally got tired of calling or emailing my parents for recipes, so I have ordered my own. You must try the popular pizza recipe on pg 252. I grew up on this homemade pizza and would take it over carryout EVERY TIME!

Horrible review guide

I've taken a total of six ap's in high school and i have 3 left this year. I've always found princeton review to have the most concise, helpful books, but this one is simply horrible. The way its written makes it confusing, random and unorganized. Never buy a review book written by an Indian guy. (I would know I am one) I have to order another review book because this one is not helpful at all.

Is it just me, or this book confuses a random sample with a SRS?

I spent some 20 mins browsing this book at my local bookstore. I believe the author states that a random sample is the same thing as a simple random sample. This is not really so. In a random sample, every unit has the same probability of being chosen as every other unit. In a simple random sample (SRS), the whole sample (n units) has an equal probability of being chosen as every other sample of n units from the same population. A given sample may be a random sample and not necessarily be a simple random sample.

Some other statistics books are also using random sample as a shortcut expression for simple random sample, but beware that they are actually two different things.

Otherwise, this book seemed comprehensive and well organized to me. It teaches a little more statistics than you need for the AP exam, and it does not provide as much AP-sepcific insider hints as Duane Hinders' book.

I read this book in Junior High school; I'm now 25!!!

This book made such an impression on me when I was 14 years old that I think of it often and always wondered where I could get it! I read it to my mom while she was in a coma... and she came out of it laughing! I'm serious! I love this book because it's easy to read in tough situations. Great light reading. A good bathroom book, too! :-)

Excellent book for the curious minds.

I work at an office where there are open abysses of space. I usually find myself upon Google looking up weird facts and seeking other somewhat intellectual entertainment forms. This book is great and has random things that have happened in history as well. It's fun to rattle off some relevant fact to your friends who usually just end up laughing. I've had a great time with this goofy book!

I really like learning oddball facts and it comes in handy because I'm on my school's High Quiz Bowl Team. I learned some stuff I never would have even thought about before, like that natives in Melaysia bathe their babies in beer, or that female sea lions are pregnant 364 days a year.

Works for me

A comprehensive collection of their writings under the cover of one handy volume. Light in weight - heavy in content, but you get the data directly from these philosophers themselves for this is their original material. Makes you feel like a serious student of philosphy and the effort used to duplicate them will serve you well in your future ponderings. An important collection and a must if you wish to study the GREAT EMPERICISTS.

Just the poor paper and printing make a difference

Excellent work done many many years ago, but still helpfull if you want to understand understanding.The empiricists is , in my view a code that I could do without. Locke had wonderful insignts, as early as 1630 in things we still can discuss.Berkeley and Hume did several things on their own, but it is good to have the esssential ideas all together in one book.
Only the poor presentation rests merits to the publisher, but give it a try, speciall y in this price.
