This delightful first novel features a lovable quartet of amateur sleuths whose loyalty, feistiness, and perseverance flush out a serial killer. Fifty-eight-year-old Mildred Bennett, estranged from an unfeeling husband, returns to Raven's Wing, Connecticut to close up her dead mother's house. She meets an old acquaintance (and former police chief) the morning after a rape/murder. He enlists the aid of Mildred and two long-time friends to begin a "private" investigation. There are frequent touches of provincial values and unpretentious humor as their search exposes more and more secrets. Unsophisticated perhaps, but most entertaining.

A Great Read !

I picked up this book at a library sale on a whim. Didnt know if I would like it since the Heros are all older but I have to say it was very enjoyable! I liked the charters and the story. I didnt know who the killer was until close to the end and then you get more suprises after that! A very good read, cant wait to find and read the other two books by this author.

Don't let the cover fool you and that includes the old folks sitting around sipping tea. Mcshea's books are full of action. They combine cozy with hard boiled and in this case it is a good combination.

Nice try, but...

Don't get me wrong, I like the idea of older people being depicted as sharp and vital. The trouble with this book is, despite the fact that I never try and solve the mystery myself, I pegged the killer the second the character was introduced. This did not add to my enjoyment of the story!
Surprisingly dull for a book so full of bloodshed and betrayal, I thought this was close, but no banana. I'll have to read another by McShea before I decide whether this was just bad luck or whether I simply don't enjoy McShea's writing.
