I enjoyed both of the aforementioned books immensely

It has been a long while since I've read this book. In the ensuing time, I have read two other biographies about Jimi; "Setting the Record Straight" by John McDermott and Eddie Kramer, and "Room Full of Mirrors" by Charles R. Cross. I enjoyed both of the aforementioned books immensely. There was a great deal more hard research done and interviews conducted. In essence, more focus, less wandering, less confabulation. Everyone has an agenda, and there are things that highlighted, or obscured, to fit that agenda. If you want a much more detailed understanding of what Jimi experienced as a little boy, Cross has that covered front to back. If you are more interested in what went on behind the scenes from the time he met Linda Keith to Woodstock and beyond, McDermott and Kramer are your go-to guys. Henderson is great at telling a story, but it's hard to tell where fact and fiction part ways. I personally wanted more facts.

Why Poets Shouldn't Write Biographies

Henderson wastes a lot of space writing descriptions of Hendrix's music which are pointless if you've already heard the music and incomprehensible if you haven't (and as a guitarist who is intimately familiar with the music discussed herein, I also found the descriptions inaccurate and misleading). These descriptions might satisfy his poetic ego, but they do nothing for the reader. Henderson, who is black, also succumbs to his own racial bias in the second half of the book: his account of the benefit performance Hendrix gave in Harlem is a telling example (the DJ hosting the performance seems a bit apologetic for the fact that his radio station doesn't actually play any of Hendrix's music; Henderson blames this fact on the huge WHITE corporation which owns the station and tells it what to play...this is patently absurd: it was a black station playing black music for a black audience; Hendrix was a black artist who didn't play typically black music and therefor didn't fit that station's format...Henderson also fails to report that a significant portion of the audience left during the performance because they just didn't dig Hendrix's music...apparently he couldn't figure out a way to blame THAT on Whitey). Henderson also blames a dose of bad acid for Hendrix's firing of Buddy Miles and bringing back Mitch Mitchell. I'm sorry, but it doesn't take bad acid to realize that Mitchell was a superior musician. Henderson also buys Monika Danneman's story of Jimi's final hours (that story has been thoroughly discredited) and thus engages in a lengthy fantasy on what was going through Jimi's mind at the end; this sort of wholesale fiction is totally inappropriate in a biography. Let the buyer beware...
