An elegantly written historical fiancial thriller - with lots of java!

Edgar Award-winning author Edward Liss returns with "The Coffee Trader," another elegantly written historical suspense thriller. In 1659 the bustling port town of Amsterdam was filled with refugees from the Spanish Inquisition, as well as schemers and rogues from all over Europe looking to make some gulden (guilder). The Dutch, after defeating the Spanish, turned their small country into a major economic power in Europe. Amsterdam became the most financially dynamic city in the world, thanks to the robust commercial activity of their commodities exchange, the world's first.

Miguel Lienzo, a Portuguese Jew, escaped the Inquisition on the Iberian peninsula and moved to the much more tolerant Netherlands. He created a home within the city's close-knit Sephardic Jewish community. Sharp-witted, and a bit of a rogue himself, Miguel thrives on the exhilaration of the Dutch bourse, but his trades of late have not gone well. On the brink of financial ruin due to sudden shifts in the sugar market, he enters into a partnership with a seductive, entrepreneurial Dutch widow with an eye for business, Geertruid Damuis. Together they concoct a daring plot to corner the market on a new commodity - coffee. Lienzo's plan has him going up against a powerful enemy, Solomon Parido, who sits on the Ma'amad, the Jewish self-governing body which controls all aspects of community life. Miguel had been betrothed to Parido's daughter, until his unfortunate lack of discretion caused the relationship to end, earning him Parido's lasting enmity. If Lienzo fails, he will not only be ruined but exiled as well...and nothing would please Parido more.

Liss meticulously recreates the 17th century Dutch city. He brings Lienzo's world to life in great detail, as well as the workings of the Amsterdam bourse which are strangely similar to modern commodities markets. The complex, labyrinthine storyline, chock full of intrigue, is really compelling, and his characters are three dimensional in scope. Miguel, actually, is a surprisingly nuanced figure.

I found myself drinking more coffee than usual while reading this novel. Something about the narrative had me smelling freshly ground coffee beans constantly. Imagine a world without Starbucks! One part of "The Coffee Trader" that I really enjoyed, amongst many, is the Europeans' astonished reaction after their first taste of this bitter, stimulating brew, and their realization that fortunes could be made with the beverage. Lienzo even foresees a day when taverns, serving coffee, will spring up on every corner. Imagine that?

interesting topic, great ending, frustrating development

i found the book difficult to read, interesting but difficult. i felt the main character kept cycling through euphoria (i'm rich), depression (i'm poor), recommitment ... and everyone went from friend, to foe, to unknown, to friend, ...

at my book club i said i thought it was not a very good book, but it would make a great movie. the last fourth of the book has so many twists and turns. the book, for me, created a dislike for the main character with shifting feelings rather than building tension that the ending deserved.

For a highly rated book, it takes forever. The plot plods along and the major reason (the early coffee trade in Amsterdam) is second place to the personal problems of the main character. . Grinds to a slow finish

This is actually a cookbook

Many of those who have reviewed this book here mention that it is a book on music theory. Yes there is some theory in this book and some of it is hard to find in other beginning piano books. I find the section on harmonic progression particularly enlightening. But rather than a book on theory, this is a cookbook with recipes for creating full sounding music out the vocal lines of sheet music, lead sheets, and "fake books".
One criticism I have seen of this book is that the style of playing is only suitable for playing old standards, like those by Cole Porter or Rogers and Hart. This is partially true, but if you enjoy the kind of music that is the background in so many movies, particularly Woody Allen films, this book is a gold mine.
If you have taken lessons, you will find it fairly easy to pick up on the method here, even if you can't sit down an play anything right now. A lot of it will come back quickly. If you are a rank beginner, this will be a lot of work. Even so, if you put the effort in learning this method that you would put into getting through an adult beginning piano book, you will come away with so much more. That said, I will recommend that you also invest in a beginning piano book and work through that at the same time.
There is, or was, a companion VHS video for the book. It is extremely entertaining and allows you to see and hear examples of the methods taught in the book. It is about two hours long and very well done. I haven't seen it around lately, but if you get this book, try to find the video also. Same title as the book.

Praise! Praise! Praise!!! This book changed my life!!!

This book has changed my life! I struggled at the piano forever until I discovered this wonderful book! While it clearly will not be for everyone wanting to learn piano, it was perfect for me. As a youth, I hated piano lessons because of the mechanical approach to learning songs that I didn't even like. I felt like I was a human playback machine. Know what I mean? Whereas, it seemed my guitar-playing friends were having all the fun. When they wanted to learn a new song, they would just start asking what the chords were. Then, they would just practice playing the chord progression at home. Later, when they got really comfortable with that, they would start getting really creative, adding interesting little frills and things and MAKING A LOT OF COOL MUSIC knowing, really, just a little bit of actual information about the song + having musical ideas of their own. So, how come piano lessons were always so different? You don't have to be jealous of your guitar-playing friends anymore. This is the book my friend's guitar teacher would have written, if he played piano. You learn a song by playing its chords. Once you're comfortable just playing the chords, you add melody. It can be easy and it can be difficult, it depends on the song, how quickly the chords change, how complicated the melody is, and how much "extra" of your own you want to add. It's a very flexible approach to playing. I highly recommend it. Best of all, unlike boring piano lessons, nobody is going to make you practice music you don't like. You can use this method on any sheet music which has a) a key signature b) a meter c) chords spelled and d) a one note melody line. Fake books are best, because all extraneous stuff is removed, but you could use this method with any sheet music meeting those minimum requirements. And, you will play these songs using only four reversible chords, an amazing but real time saver, key to the success of this "fake" method!

Ditto: Best Music Book I've Ever Read

I just got an older copy of this book (1976) and was looking for more stuff made by these authors. I was hoping to see a newer version of this book that included a CD.
Anyway I wanted to "ditto" the sentiments expressed by many other reviewers. This book explains music in a manner I've never seen done so thoroughly and yet simply. Its *perfect* if you have some music background, but never really got past intermediate phase. Rank beginners will have a more difficult time with the musical notation. However, this book is *so* good that I'd still recommend it to beginners as well... you can learn a lot about making music - some will be applied later than sooner, but its better to already have this book than risk going on for years and having forgotten about it. It will become a reference and guide as you get better.
The issue of unfamiliar songs is not a problem - they refer to old "standards" which you can easily find mp3 on the net. I'm also unfamiliar with these songs, and having started to listen to the "standards" has opened up a whole new genre of music for me which I really enjoy.
The issue of humor is deserved. These guys try to be funny but the puns make me gag more than guffaw. Its getting to point that its funny because its so not funny. But the great content makes up for this.
This book has opened up a whole new understanding of music for me. I now see patterns in music I never knew existed (circle of fifths). And it has explained some little things I've always half-wondered about but never could articulate. Like for example, why some notes of a melody will clash with the harmony... should I create chords for these notes? Or do I just let them clash? Exactly how do they relate to the current chordal structure? Which notes should I make chords for? How do I design my bass cleff arrangement? How do I fill in treble cleff harmony with the melody? Etc. etc.
These guys rock! (Or at least they do the fox-trot and the swing! Oh god.. that's the same kind of bad puns they use throughout the whole book... now I'M starting to do it!)

Michener's "Texas" is a Big as the State!

Author James A. Michener has conceived and written an epic novel about the state we now know as Texas. Using his characteristic writing style of starting at the very beginning (in this case, with Coronado looking for the 7 cities of Cibola) and then developing the story generation after generation through his many rich and interesting characters. Michener tells the complete story of Texas, from its beginnings to the present. The reader learns how Texas was first "settled" by Spanish priests who came to bring salvation to the natives, what animals first roamed its lands (He devotes part of a chapter to the armadillo and it is very interesting reading!), what the native "Indians" were like and how they survivied in this sometimes harsh environment, how the Americans took the land from Mexico in the Spanish-American war, the Alamo and what really happened there, how the discovery of oil changed the state from a huge open-range cattle pasture to an economic giant, and finally, it tells the story of the multi-ethnic people of Texas, and this perhaps is Michener's strength in story-telling.

Yes, the novel is a long one - over 1,000 pages, but it is still an absorbing page-turner. Each chapter is a mini-novel in itself and tells the story of a particular generation of people in Texas' development. Michener has a knack of creating and developing characters that are both interesting and believable and this is his greatest strength as a writer. The reader comes to care about these fictious charcters as though they are living breathing realities, and in a sense, the charcters are "real", as Michener's painstaking research enabled him to form his charcters based on historical personages.

"Texas" is a marvelous book, and for those that are into long sweeping novels, this is a book for you. It seems that Michener's writing style either fascinates or tries the patience of his readers. Michener goes into great detail in explaining the lives of his characters and some readers are impatient with his extensive prose and are apt to put his books down before finishing them. I happen to love his writing style and appreciate the detail, as it paints vivid word pictures in my mind. Michener is one of my favorite authors, for each of his books takes me to a particular place or culture, and it is as though I am actually viewing that culture, its people, and the land first-hand. I have learned a wealth of information about near and distant lands thanks to the writing of James A. Michener. These are places I may never visit in my life, but thanks to Michener, it is as though I have been there through his writing.

I most certainly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn about the land and people of Texas, or any student of historical fiction. (the book makes compelling reading even if you have no interest in historical novels). Once you read Michener's "Texas", you will have a tremendous appreciation for the hardships that the first settlers endured to "tame" this great land. Like me, I believe you will always remember Michener's "Texas" for the rest of your life.

I highly recommend this book; it may be one of Michener's best novels.

The most compelling book I have ever read

Because my friends all know what a book-hound I am, people often ask me what my all-time favorite book is. Admittedly the answer to this would change over time, but, at present, "I Will Bear Witness" is the one that first pops into my mind.

I found this very personal account of the days and nights of a German Jewish man--an inoffensive and formerly rather conservative German nationalist academic married to a Gentile--during the Nazi terror regime to be absolutely breathtaking. Indeed, I was so caught up in his account that I took an unexpected day of vacation from work just to not interrupt my reading once I had started.

Further, I found myself sprawled on my bed, as is sometimes customary with me, surrounded by ancillary books, atlases, and maps --a behavior that signifies I'm reading a book that has utterly gripped me and a book that is expanding my horizons.

Klemperer was (just barely) saved from being sent to a concentration camp due to his marriage to a non-Jew. However, he lived every day under the threat of torture and deportation to a camp and his journal tells of the years of grinding anxiety over his fate and the fate of his wife, friends, and relatives-many of whom were taken. It also speaks to the minutiae of life under the Nazi's--such things as their penchant for legalisms to justify their treatment of the Jews embodied in his incessant embroilment in Nazi demands that he take part in the legalisms of their confiscation of his property. Moreover, as the war draws to a close, he draws a stunning portrait of life as a war refugee--a picture that applies to war refugees the world over throughout time.

Kudos to those who elevated this book to number one among the history choices-it deserves it and in my mind deserves even more.

Life-Affirming, Edge-of-your-seat, Nonstop Reading

Victor Klemperer's diary of the years of the Hitler dictatorship and his recording of the day-to-day lives of the Jews of Dresden, his thoughtful and insightful commentary on the methods (particularly the language of the propaganda) of the Third Reich, the heart-wrenching stories of those who were taken away never to be seen again, his experience in the firebombing of Dresden in 1945 and his miraculous journey home should be required reading for everyone about the horrors of tyranny and war. It is also a tribute to the true human spirit and the power of the intellect. Klemperer never lost his determination to live, despite all the blows of terror that were aimed at him, his family, and his friends. That he believed there was something to live for--in the midst of utter barbarity--should inspire all of us to work for a better world. It did me.

A remarkable record of a dark time. Reading it gives one the courage to carry on in the dark times that have come again.

EXTRAORDINARY.

Is 'extraordinary' a powerful enough word for this book?
On reading it, I almost couldn't believe that it was genuine...but no writer of fiction could have created something as extraordinary,(I've used the word again,) as this.
Klemperer was a Jew, who managed to survive the war living within Nazi Germany because he was married to a Christian woman & 'luckily' for us, he wrote EVERYTHING down. Every. Tiny. Detail.
A superbly intelligent & witty man. Sometimes these kinds of books are just fascinating as eye-witness accounts, but what's unusual about this, is the fact that this man could actually write AND SO well.
SO sad & frustrating that it wasn't published within his lifetime.
I can't say any more. I'll never be able to say enough.
Probably the most extraordinary eye-witness account about life in Nazi Germany available...NO!...that will EVER be available.
Definetely the most extraordinary, (yes, it IS the right word,) book I've personally EVER read.
I'm honoured in being able to recommend this to you.

Good concept, but missed the target.

Grammar is boring, frustrating, and complex. At least, that's the impression I got from taking it in school. This book attempts to take a fun (well, not-so-boring) approach to explain it all... And for the most part it does well. It's concise, and the examples are good. Where things fall apart is when the book refers to parts of grammar that haven't been explained yet. For example, starting with Quick Quiz #8 (page 25), the reader is asked to identify prepositional phrases, but phrases and clauses aren't covered until page 59. Naturally, you'll miss a lot of the questions. The answers to the quizzes seldom have explanations. If an answer seems to contradict a grammar rule or just not make sense, you're left hanging. Discouraging? You bet. If you were confused by grammar in school, this book may help -- but don't expect it to answer all your questions or eliminate frustration with the topic.

I think this book is great. It tells us everything, but since its purpose is to serve as a reference book, I thought the outside remarks, such as "nobody expects you to know everything" is really not needed. I found out a lot about grammar from this book. However, some information needs to be explained further. They don't have enough examples of different types of sentences for every component in writing. The main problem with this book is that my English teacher is requiring the class to practically memorize the whole book and get tested on it, but this is a personal problem and has nothing to do with the quality of this book. I give this book 5 stars for its overall review of grammar. Minus 1 star for lack of examples. Thus, 4 stars.

Don't buy this book. If you have to read it, steal it.

Bill Mason is, indeed, a master thief and is also a very good story teller. The first third of the book, where he describes his thieving, is very entertaining, although in a creepy way. Any titillation that I got from the clever mechanics of his "work" were quickly shot all to hell when I realized how he was affecting his victims. No matter how artfully done, there is absolutely no justification for his actions.

Spoiler alert: Thankfully, he gets himself shot during a fairly routine heist and almost dies. But doesn't. Then he gets arrested and his life starts to seriously fall apart. This section of the book is tedious and reveals just how repulsive this smooth-talking jerk is. Just because you confess to being a jerk and admit that you're destroying your family, doesn't make it any less reprehensible. The title, "Confessions..." Is accurate because it really is a confession. But I'm not a priest and want to take a shower after listening to him go on and on about what a jerk he is while he continues to be a jerk and hurt everyone around him. (Feel free to replace all instances of "jerk" with the obscenity of your choice.)

I haven't finished the book yet and probably will continue reading because now I want to know how far he falls. I'm just really pissed off that I paid for the book and, innocently, contributed to his bank account.

When is the movie coming out?

If you are fan of the books or the movies from Goodfellas and Catch Me If You Can, then you will definitely enjoy this book. Truth is always way more fascinating than fiction. The risks that Bil Mason took will astound you and the people he met, stole from and almost stole from will fascinate you even more. Pay close attention to the first word in the title. This is not a book about bragging, but rather an atonement for what he had done to his victims, their families and more importantly what he did to his family. You will also read great tidbits on home security and the judicial system. He tells a great story, but I enjoyed it more knowing that he was remorseful about what he had done and what he has and or is doing to atone for his bad choices. This will feel like a fast read in part because the author writes as if he is talking to you and too the point rather than at you in superfluous manner. It's been on the better books I've read this years. Enjoy to all those you decide if this subject is up your alley (hint: read the prologue before deciding to do further).

Very interesting story though I grew to dislike the authors lack of empathy for the people he's hurt. The entire book was layers of excuses which muddied the intensity of his exploits.

fighters, vol 2

green's series remains one of the first and still one of the best tech/history books of ww2 aircraft. small in size (5.5x5 in) the books are large in stature. vol 2 deals w/fighter aircraft from great britain and italy. despite the short aircraft bio's, accompained w/b+w photos & 3 view drawings, each review is highy detailed yet accessible to even pedestrian readers of flight histories. the 10 vol series first appeared in 1961 w/aircraft presented by nationality within type. unfortunately the series ends w/german bombers thru the me 328. bombers of great britain, italy, japan and the usa are not represented. still, an essential addition to any flight library.

My edition dates from 1960, hence it is venerable by any measure.

But the information has certainly not been either surpassed, not the scope of the volume itself matched in the intervening years.

I've encountered a solitary typo (see if you can get that today) and one slightly glaring error regarding the Bloch machines.

Mr. Green knew his stuff, and remains in my mind THE greatest historian of WW2 aircraft. Anything less than 5 stars would be an insult.

Stoddard always gives us a gentle, inviting lifestyle book. This one has encouraging words for a less hectic path. She always has lovely descriptive paragraphs that make one wish for an earlier time that is more gracious.

Helpful for some, but it's not for everyone.

I have read other books on perfectionism, as well as scientific research papers on this topic, and this particular book was somewhat helpful but not really what I was looking for. Nevertheless, if you are different from me and you like her style, you may benefit greatly from this book on an important topic about which too little has been written. So I have given this book 4 stars even though it didn't fit me very well, because I think it may help a lot of other people. It is definitely not a concise, scientific book on perfectionism. I found that each significant point that she made seemed to take a lot of pages, and many of her points were repeated, so I found that my mind kept wandering. Also, I was somewhat disappointed in her long section on death, because I am a Christian and I have much more hope in an afterlife than she does. Her belief seems to be summed up by the following quotation which she gives from Peter Megargee Brown: "The memory of you with those you left behind is perhaps your ultimate immortality." Finally, I am a male reader but I think her writing style would appeal much more to women. Regardless, she made some excellent points, especially in the first three chapters, and I did benefit to some extent from reading this book. But for my personality, the best book I have found on perfectionism is "Too Perfect: When Being in Control Gets Out of Control" by Allan Mallinger.

Poorly Done Book with Deceptive Subtitle

This book isn't about perfectionism, so don't let the subtitle fool you. It's really just a rich woman spouting niceties, using bland positive-thinking style philosophies. Her "advice" is nothing more than motherly observations. Along the way she tells some depressing stories about her family that she tries to turn positive and constantly needs to tell us about her husband (a lawyer), her trips (like to Paris where they just went to "do nothing," and the famous people she knows (Jackie Kennedy). She tells little stories that snobby women at New England tea parties may find cute, but the average reader won't be able to relate to.

In the end there is nothing solid to help the reader learn to overcome perfectionism and have "balance and freedom." It's just a bunch of platitudes strung together, such as "be true to yourself" and "take time for yourself."

Good explanations, but not really a good review

This book acts more like a condensed text book than a review book. It provides decent explanations of the physics concepts, better than other review books I've seen. It doesn't, however, do anything to highlight key forumlas, etc. It doesn't have any lists to review, or any other type of quick review feature. The problems at the end of the chapters are really good, and the answer explanations are USUALLY very good too.

My other complaint is that the integration of the B and C material is a little bit confusing. The C stuff is interwoven with the B stuff, and is supposedly marked, but I've gotten confused about it. My final complaint is that there is only one Physics B practice exam, and one Physics C practice exam. I bought this book because it was required by my teacher...I ended up buying the Kaplan AP book, which is better with the quick review, but lacking in the explanations, and the Sparknotes SAT book (because I'm taking the SAT Physics, too. This book is the best with the more basic concepts.)

Great study guide for a tough test

This book was required for my daughter's physics class last year. The teacher of her AP Physics class has a very high pass rate on the AP Physics exams with the majority of her students scoring 4 or 5. She attributes this success to this book. My daughter scored a 5 on both the B and C tests. Now my son is prepping to take the AP Physics B exam and once again this book is required. I didn't even pause when he asked for a new copy of the latest edition.

Update: My son recently competed in a regional scholastic competition and took first place in physics. He's a junior taking the AP Physic B class and took first place against second year (AP Physics C) students. He used this book to prepare for the competition.

Not AP material

If you are taking Physics B, buy a Physics B book. If you are taking the C test, buy a C book. But please, don't rely on this book to study. This book does not qualify as a study guide. The questions are way too easy compared with actual AP questions, and though the explanations are clear, the material does not go deep enough into the subject. Especially the section on Fluids. The B test goes A LOT more into detail.

It is only good as a starter. Do the book before starting the course, that way you will have a fair idea of what the topics are about. The book is very readable and fairly easy to understand. But please, don't use it as a study guide.
