As in Brother Wind (1994) and others, Harrison once again displays her first-rate storytelling talents, here in a rousing tale of murder, revenge, and internecine warfare. The stunning backdrop this time consists of the coast and interior of what is now Alaska in the far, far mists of the seventh century b.c. was home of the Aleut peoples. Chakliux, the Dzuuggi (a favored child trained in oral traditions), was born to a woman of the Near River Village and as a newborn put out to die because of a deformed foot. He was found by K'os, a fiery, bitter young woman of the Cousin River people, and raised by her. Eventually, Chakliux returns to Near River, but the anger of K'os, bent on a savage revenge upon those who have wronged her (and out of pure meanness to hurt those who haven't), brings ruin to the efforts of Chakliux, a wise and gentle man, who's determined to bring peace among the villages. Then in Near River, Daes, mother of a young boy by the trader Cen, is mysteriously murdered, as is Chakliux's old grandfather. And why are the village dogs dying? Bad feeling swirls around Chakliux, who travels to the wise Cloud Finder of Cousin River to acquire the strong ``golden-eyed'' dogs. But Cloud Finder is killed by warriors egged on by K'os. Finally, Chakliux and his often untrustworthy brother Sok travel to other villages. In the First Men Village is Aqamdax, a trained storyteller, daughter of Daes. She'll be betrayed by Sok, accused of murder by the Walrus Hunters, and wind up as a slave to vicious K'os before escaping to a difficult marriage. Great Characters Make This A Very Interesting Read

I wish I had read Song Of The River before I read Cry Of the Wind. I would have had a better understanding of the characters and their relationships. Nevertheless, I enjoyed this book as much as I did the second book in the trilogy. Although the story takes place in primitive times, the human natures of these characters are modern and it's easy to relate to them. The Dzuggi are the honored storytellers in these books and though Ms. Harrison uses the written word to tell her stories, she should be honored as Dzuggi herself. With her words, she places some very vivid pictures in the mind of the reader.

Like it ......didn't love it

And can't fault the author that it wasn't what I had hoped for. In the first pages of Harrison's "Song of The River', critics negatively compared Jean Auel's writing to that of Mrs. Harrison's. I would agree that Harrison is a more lyrical writer. Her characters are multi-dimensional her prose interesting, and time, place, language all seem believable to me.

I guess Auel spoiled me into thinking that most pre-histories would contain descriptive information about how they lived, more (pre) historical facts. Yes, in the appendix there's a list of medicinal plants, so if I knew it was there BEFORE I got to the end, I could have referred to it when she would write things like 'the blue-hooded flower was made into a poultice to stop the..." whatever. (I'm butchering her words, but you get the point).

It's an interesting character-heavy story, but doesn't contain the depth of information that made my first pre-historical fiction books so fascinating to me. I was hoping for more and was disappointed. I'm planning on reading the remainder of the trilogy because I already have them, and Harrison's writing keeps my attention. I devoured Auel's books, I will read Harrison's.

Steinar's quixotic journey through a treacherous world

This peculiar but affecting parable bears similarities to Laxness's most famous work, "Independent People." With its many references to Icelandic sagas, it describes the conflict between the simple life of a sparsely populated countryside and the cynical modernity of the outside world. Its farmer-hero, Steinar of Hildar, is a pastoral Don Quixote, a study of the innocence of a man who seeks meaning and "paradise" for himself and his family, who cannot bring himself to think ill of others, and whose optimism and faith is unshakable.

Steinar's journey is not an easy one--for him or for his family; their trusting naivety is no defense against the guiles of those who think themselves wiser and better. Steinar's tale begins when he selflessly offers a pony, the beloved pet of his children, to the king of Denmark, who in return offers expenses-paid hospitality in his realm. On his pilgrimage to visit the king, Steinar crosses paths, several times, with a persecuted Mormon bishop who is proselytizing in the countryside; the bishop regales the farmer with tales of an earthly paradise: Utah. (The Mormon element of the novel is not gratuitous, by the way. A definitive study of Scandinavia, by T. K. A. Derry, notes that during the years 1873-90, at least 12,000 Icelanders--out of a population of 70,000--emigrated to the North America in large part because of Mormon conversions.)

Steinar's subsequent travels eventually take him to Utah, where he hopes to bring his family to share in the earth's bounty. Little does he know that his equally gullible and simple wife and children have fallen victim to a series of scoundrels, particularly the local sheriff, who has made a career of seeding his offspring among the adolescent girls in his parish.

How Laxness ties together these strands of folklore and adventure is fascinating and ambiguous, heartwarming and odd--and it is bizarrely unforgettable. I'm still puzzling over what Laxness's novel actually "means"--if, indeed, a clear moral is meant at all--but the haunting characterizations and the compassionate portrait of his homeland alone are the stuff of poetry.

A Remarkable Life Journey

A saga about Steinar Steinsson of Hlidar farm in Iceland, a simple man who lives with his simple wife and two simple children. Set in the later 1800's, the story begins with the family possessing a remarkable pony that is the envy of others, it attracts so much attention that Steinar decides to take the pony to a national celebration and present it to King Christian of Denmark. It is here that he encounters Bishop Didrik for the first time, an ex-Icelander who now makes his home in Salt Lake, the bishop is back in Iceland to convert souls to Mormonism. Later Steinar is invited to Denmark by King Christian, where he meets European royalty, drinks water from a special spring and after another encounter with the bishop is converted to Mormonism. He decides to travel to America abandoning his family and embracing his new faith, the Mormon community is at this point is still young and still polygamous. Eventually after some years he sends for his family in Iceland but by then nothing is the same, his farm is in ruins and his loved ones broken.
Funny and heartbreaking at the same time, this novel is as beautiful to read as a fairytale. Much also about life in Iceland at that time and the early history of Mormonism in Utah.

A masterful tale

A compellingly beautiful story told with warmth and gentle irony. The influence of the Eddas and journey epics is interwoven with touches of magical realism in the narration of Steinar Steinsson's journey. Steinar's humble character, good heart, and openness to new ideas and experiences make possible his remarkable journey; but his real motivation for the journey is the love he bears his family and his desire to manifest the depth of his love by providing them a paradise. The intrusive narrator adds to the humor of the tale. I loved the strong depictions of setting and the scope of this epic of a poor, but hardly common, man.

very disturbing story

The story line was very good, there was way too much detail. There was way too repeats way too long .You started to jump through the chapters just to finally get to the end. You had to find out what happened to her, there was no way this nut case could be left out on the streets.So sorry about the people that died and the families involved. I still can't figure out why social security did not question all those checks going to the same house. Also why didn't the families try harder to see what was going on, how many times do you get conflicting stories about where those people went? If this was my family I would have waited by Dorothea's house until my family showed up, or she would have to answer to the police about where they were.

Interesting True Crime Story...Facinating!

I picked this up on a whim walking through the library...I think I'm genetically disposed to be attracted to any book with the world diabolical in the title...this was an interesting case...I am, as always fascinated by people who are, for whatever reason, compelled to kill. The subject here was fascinating to me because I don't remember this case at all and it leaves me wondering what the heck I was doing at the time that I'd never heard of Dorthea Puente at all...but then I realized that for much of the time this case was on trial, I was living in National Parks and not really having access to a TV. While reading the book, it is painfully obvious that the person writing it was once a former writer for the Los Angeles Times as the entire thing read like a really, really, really long newspaper article...but still, it's packed with details of Dorthea's life, the victims, and the trial from start to finish...so one doesn't want for left out details. Overall a good read, but not quick...it took me three days to get through it all because it was fact dense and not as fluid as I might have liked.

Good literature. Addiction knows no limiting circumstance.

Because our bodies work on the pain / pleasure principle, the human mind seeks both pain and pleasure in pursuit ultimately of pleasure. Anything having these two masters can become addictive . People are really addicted to pleasure. Even serial killers derive pleasure from their crimes awful outcomes and, hating themselves for past killings, continue to kill. Addiction is not limited only to weak minded individuals. It isn't always related to a substance society has termed or legislated into objective contraband. A young man's crush on a girl recently led him to kill her because, in his mind, if he could not have her, no one could. I find the greatest intrigue for me is how addiction is like human kind, very old and cuts across all class and wealth strata. Society clucks tongues and points fingers when it should perhaps realize addiction is a compulsive disorder over which the victim has no control and is often more a victim than a perpetrator. This is a well written book and one all people from every walk of life would do well to read because it breaks the back of self deception and the idea of smug conceited normalcy. There is NO normalcy. Everyone is a potential addict.

This was my Mother Goose book

This was the nursery rhyme book I grew up with, and today, more than half a century later, I still spend time with it. It has lost both its covers and several pages are scribbled on with gold crayon, but I will never throw it away. Every grandmother or grandfather should give a copy to his or her newborn grandchild, and every mother and father should read the poems aloud to him or her from day one.

Hundreds of classic nursery rhymes with some of the best illustrations ever

Not only does this book have all the old favorites, but it also has many I'd never heard before, even having been raised in a family of avid readers. But what really makes this book is de Angeli's illustrations. They're charming and filled with funny details. Every single page has at least one. Some are black and white sketches, others full color paintings.

I read this book to my children and grandchildren. It is beautifully detailed and complete. The illustrations are great and the children like them.I feel it is the only nursery rhyme book needed in one's personal library. Perfect for all ages.

Ron Roy paints a coulourful picture of mystery & suspense about 3 friends who go to a dude ranch and discover that someone steals the gold nugget they found. They spend the week panning for gold, chasing down clues and narrowing down the suspects, all guests at the dude ranch.

The story is interesting, but the plot was not all that believable, as it is unlikely that three 8-year-olds could catch a world-renown thief. Although this book is written for a slightly younger reader, mystery stories are always fun and enjoyable. I give this book 4 stars out of 5, because it was a bit slow to start off, but as the story developed, I found myself sitting on the edge of my seat, waiting to find out what would happen next

How to Beat the IRS

Keeping up with all the IRS rules and regulations can be a real hassle. The tax code keeps getting more and more complex every year, in spite of countless promises by politicians to "simplify" the system.

This book does give some useful tips on how to avoid taxes. It points out specific ways that you can legally reduce your tax burden, along with key mistakes to avoid, unless you like the idea of being audited.

This book is written in an outline format, with boldface and bulleted text throughout. This is helpful, for finding specific information. You can quickly turn to a chapter that interests you, and then narrow down your reading by looking for the sub- topic that interests you.

Thw way this book portrays the the American tax system might not sit too well with some people. The author talks about the IRS, not necessarily as a great, friendly institution, but not as something to take caution with, either. He paints a picture of the IRS as being a firm, but reasonable institution and points out that we should not fear the IRS at all. We all can think of many, many occasions where this has not been the case. The IRS has abused its authority in many instances, and many feel that some of its unethical actions are directly the result of political manipulation against enemies, like in the case of auditing of high- profile individuals. But this book avoids talking negative, making the IRS seem like an institution that is reasonable and accommodating.

This book shows the reader many ways to avoid taxes, and much of the advice is sound, but I found this book to be a yawner overall. It's one of those books that could be viewed as a reference book, or a reading book. However, if you try to read the book from cover to cover (it's more than 450 pages in length), don't be surprised if your eyelids seem to become very heavy after every few pages of reading. This isn't exciting material, and it can induce drowsiness quickly.

This book has been updated and revised many times to keep it current with the ever- changing tax laws. It's the type of book that becomes outdated very quickly, and needs constant revisions to keep up with the times. My edition is already a couple years old, and I can already see where the technology chapter is way behind.

This is an ok book to have around, as a reference guide to reducing taxes and complying with IRS rules. If you don't want to pay a tax professional and you enjoy the challenge of working on your own taxes, then this book could prove to be very beneficial. For everyone else, it will likely just sit on a shelf and collect dust. Buy it only if you feel that you really need it.

Should be in every home or bookshelf there is!

Educational and very interesting fun to read book believe it or not. Everyone should read this, it's not any kind of illegal advice if you're thinking that. Just full of IRS and tax info that isn't made wide open for the public. Because if you don't ask or seek, you know they're NOT going to volunteer it!
