How they used to write them.

Bottom line first
Booth Tarkinton’s The Magnificent Amberson’s was the Pulitzer Prize Winner of 1919 and remains a book beloved by many. I cannot say that it is close to being my favorite, but it is easy to agree with those who praise it. When folks talk about how books used to be written. The Magnificient Ambersons is one of those books. No objectionable language violence or sex. It has respect for traditions and church. More than this, Tarkington has a story to tell. It could easily have been hackneyed and trite. Instead this is a story about class, and the times changing but from a less expected point of view. The language of the story telling and point of view give it more than ample reading value. Still it is not one of my favorites. The fact that it is a free E Read should help your decision. I had no problems with the technical work of the volunteers who converted the text.

The opening pages do a wonderful job of introducing the reader to a time several generations back. Olives for example are a rich person’s extravagance and the reader is advised that you have to eat at least nine if you are ever to enjoy eating them.
Indeed the special, exalted status of the new created super rich is introduced as a central theme in a manner so home spun and low key as to almost sneak by. A beautiful woman is of course going to get a certain respect, but a rich, beautiful young woman is to be believed and differed to in all things. Not so much the spoiled male child of the town’s leading money family.

George Amberson Minafer is a spoiled, petted, bully. He is self-important blind to others, including his family and incapable of thinking that he should ever do anything except be and by being show the riffraff how life should be lived. From the beginning we will share the town’s hope that he will one day receive his comeuppance. It will be a long time coming and in coming it will not be anything like what the reader might expect.
I like this book. Many years ago I had stumbled upon Tarkington’s Penrod books and felt them to be more believable than Mark Twain’s version of adolescent boys. The Amberson’s is a more complex and nuanced novel.

I found it a little slow. Towards the end there is an appeal to magic which may not have been that far out for its time, but we had not been prepared for it. It came off as a cheating method to force the story in a certain direction. We also have a town version of the Picture of Dorian Grey in the form of an Amberson donated statue of Neptune. As the Town’s becomes more prosperous and grows beyond the importance of the failing Amberson fortunes, this statue will be the physical marker of these changes.

Very good book

I like to read the award winning books. Especially the ones that win the Pulitzer award. Since I've read all of the latest ones, I started going back to the early 1900's. I haven't found one that is not as good as the recent ones and it's fun reading about an earlier time in our country. This one was very good and I hated to finish it.

This book is one of my all time favorite classics. Tarkingtons descriptions and words are a feast for your senses. Modern authors may write of this particulate era, but only someone who actually lived in it can bring it to life!! All of his work amazes me and this is my very favorite!!

Sensible and Easy

I have read lots of different child psychology and parent/child relations books. This is the only one I've ever picked up, started to read, and had the thought, "Wow, I actually think the thoughts and advice here make sense." I know it's terribly pushy of me but I'm considering buying it as a Christmas present for everyone I know who relates to children. The book is full of examples and stories that make it easy to relate the knowledge within the book with how it might be applied in the real world. I could instantly see how the language and responses I might be giving my own son could lead to confusion and even battles. The best part about this book is how it encourages you to help your child grow his/her own self esteem. This is one book I'm planning to read, read again, and then copy parts of it to post on the refrigerator as reminders to myself of the kind of parent that I want to be.

Daughter, now 19, living proof this book works . . .

Daughter might not have reached 19 if not for this book! When I was pregnant, a friend insisted I find this book. It was out of print at the time, but I dug up a yellowed copy at a used book store. I read it and although I couldn't envision ever being in many of the situations, it colored everything I did as a parent from the first day. It works beautifully in re-shaping how one relates to all people, not just children. It's easy to change your "script" when the new approach has such an immediate and gratifying result.

Children are human, parents are human!

This book has two main sections, the first about children and their emotional needs, the second more focused on what is going on inside the parents.

For the chapter on (parents') anger alone, this book is worth the money. I also own "How to talk..." and wondered whether this book would have sufficient unique material, and having just finished reading it, I have no regrets at all about buying it. I am a person who struggles to express anger in helpful ways, and this book has plenty of suggestions for me to try. If you thought that parents had to be calm, cool and patient 100% of the time, this book will save your sanity.

I also recommend the book "Between Parent and Child" by Dr Haim Ginott. That book was an incredibly therapeutic book to read for me, helping me to work through why my relationship with my own parents has been such a struggle, helping me to understand why I constantly thought throughout my childhood that they didn't really listen to me.

The Best that Whitley Strieber Has to Offer!

This book is the most compelling book about Alien Encounters that I have ever read. It is a brutally honest account of one man's struggle for complete understanding of what is happening to him. I have been a critic of Strieber's more recent books. This, his second book of the Visitor Phenomenon, better captures his feelings while he still had an honest perception of them.

Communion follow-up: recommended only for the Strieber devotee

This book was written concurrently with the author's international bestseller "Communion" and published just one year later. It turns out Strieber had always intended for his exploration of what happened to him with the visitors to become a publishing series, starting with "Communion" (which is genuinely worth reading) and continuing through further volumes, which sold far less well and are not so highly regarded.

Whereas "Communion" has a simple, visceral power and reads as a coherent, chronological narrative about the author's experiences with the visitors, "Transformation" is more a collection of recollections and speculations which didn't make it into the first book. It jumps from one idea to another and is less focussed than the first volume, though it does contain some interesting stuff. Further abductions both of Whitley and his son Andrew (whose real name is used in this book) are described, some of which do read as dream-like; their reality is degraded by the uncomfortable fact that, whereas thousands of abduction accounts from other abductees describe exactly the same beings and processes, Strieber's are in many details unique and different. This is usually a red flag, and lends support to the contention expressed by many that Strieber "has a hard time telling fact from fiction."

At the core of "Transformation" is the author's struggle to find the meaning of the experience, and here he goes way off the map. He journeys into metaphysical and rather new-age territory as he comes to believe the visitors recycle souls, and that the Earth is a kind of "school." There are echoes of Jim Sparks' writings in the self-indulgent, obsessively introspective narcissism which characterises much of the book's content.

Strieber is still a good writer though, and this is the saving grace of "Transformation." From the pen of a less competent writer it might read as a rambling incoherent mess, a meandering tract of new-age mumbo-jumbo. However the book is better than that: it's just nowhere near as good as "Communion" and doesn't make any lasting contribution to the understanding of what is going on with this pervasive phenomenon - though it pretends it does.

In summary, "Transformation" would be of interest mainly to the devotee of Strieber's writing (and he's admittedly a good writer), or to anyone who wants to read everything ever written about the abduction/visitor issue. It's OK, but not one of the better books on the subject.

This book is out of this world

I loved this book, it is full of revelations about the mysteries of the human soul, and reveals that the universe is much bigger and multifaceted than the average man or woman could have ever guessed. This book is very deep, and has a definite spiritual feel to it. The book is a non fiction but poetic account of a man named Whitley Strieber, who has been abducted by aliens, numerous times throughout his entire life, beginning when he was a young boy. Transformation is highly literate, and extremely well written. It is never dull, a true page turner. The book reveals how Whitley Strieber the most famous abductee in America has been transformed both mentally and spiritually by his abduction experiences. Highly recommended to anyone interested in UFOs, alien abductions, the new age, freemasons, life on other planets, reincarnation, God and spirituality, as well as the deepest insights into the human psyche.

The Cathedral Within uses the metaphor of architecture to look at the way individuals allocate their resources to improve public life. Just as the enduring magnificence of a cathedral is not erected overnight, so, too, the transformation of a society takes many, many years to complete. And just as the construction of a cathedral is less a reflection of its builders' interest in masonry than a testament to the soaring reach of the human spirit, philanthropy is not so much a response to need as to a basic human requirement to give something meaningful back to society.

Bill Shore is the founder of Share Our Strength, a national nonprofit devoted to raising funds for antihunger and antipoverty organizations worldwide, and his book showcases the stories of some of the social entrepreneurs he has come across in the course of his work. This book is not about religious consolation or giving. It is about helping, and finding that more rewarding than business or politics. But that still makes it sound too much like a self-help tome. It is an explanation of why helping is important and how sound helping organizations are succeeding these days, when government helping programs are scaling back and dying out. Shore directs Share Our Strength, an organization that helps organizations concerned with alleviating hunger and poverty, especially for children. Indeed, trotting out some fine illustrative stories about what children need from his own fatherly experience, Shore posits children's health and welfare as the quintessential reasons for helping work. As for the success stories in helping work today, Shore profiles seven. The most striking commonality among them is entrepreneurial spirit: if these nonprofit agencies don't already have for-profit subsidiaries, they are seriously considering them. For they see, as Shore emphasizes, that charity and redistribution of wealth (taxes for government programs) must be supplemented by "creating new wealth" through producing and selling goods and services. So young or dissatisfied businesspersons looking for meaningful work should consider helping work, Shore suggests, engaging in it as if it were the work of building a cathedral--seemingly endless but endlessly rewarding: think of it as a cathedral within. A loving, courageous call to arms from Share Our Strength founder and executive director Shore. Shore's book is hardly a standard nonprofit policy wonk's approach to hunger and poverty. Its full of surprises, not the least of which is that he believes that the days of the nonprofit charity organization are essentially over. In this era of unprecedented wealth, people are actually donating less to charity, and recent government cuts in welfare and food stamps bode ill for the hungry people of America. What is needed is nothing less than a paradigm shift, says Shorean entirely new approach to social justice. The author proposes that nonprofits enter into sustained, profitable partnerships with corporations, ending the frustrating annual hand-to-mouth quest of nonprofit fundraising through long-term licensing agreements, marketing arrangements, and profit-sharing. (An example of this would be many public radio stations' partnerships with Store-of-Knowledge novelty shops or American Express's well-publicized ``Charge for Hunger'' alliance with SOS.) Shore, of course, provides many inspirational stories of how this is being accomplished across the country. He recounts moments when ordinary people crossed the line from inaction to action and began to make a difference, including an indefatigable Denver chef and a pots-and-pans salesman in Ohio who strive to involve their businesses with the fight to end hunger. In other cities, community action groups such as CityYear, the Chicago Children's Choir, and Seattle's unconventional Pioneer Human Services are putting community-wealth building into action, with impressive results. Shore is firmly committed to his views but never preachy; one of the most touching ``Everyman'' elements of the book is how he grounds SOS's goal of saving children with raising his own two kids, Zach and Mollie. He realizes that ``writing about children in the abstract has its dangers'' and extends this to a greater dedication to resist objectifying or distancing America's poor. Positively invigorating. Perfect Father's Day Gift - But Buy One for Yourself Too.

Billy Shore doesn't just have a message; he is a great storyteller with a message. The result is a book that you won't want to stop reading until you get to the very last page. Then you will want to go out and do something to make yourself and the world a little bit better place. It has been a long time since I read a book that made me think so much, or reflect so deeply on the world in which we live; or the one that we will leave to the next generations. Shore guides us to the realization that there is much that we can be doing to leave our children the basic freedoms of safety, education and the ability to earn a decent livelihood; things that many of us took for granted. This book has genuine heros and heroines, great parenting stories, humour, lots of examples of what's working, and some very pointed examples of why the clock is ticking for the children of our country. And as the title promises, just reading the book makes you begin to feel empowered to start giving more to get more out of life. A great dose of inspiration and direction for individuals and organizations.

Building A Soul For Business

Perhaps the most important points that this book makes are 1) If you can't build the structure, add a few bricks! and 2) Community Wealth and Social Capital are re-inventing business from the soul out!
In this well-written book, Shore (Founder of Share Our Strength) uses the model of a cathedral to demonstrate that large dreams are community efforts that reach beyond personal lifetimes to accomplish, and that appear impossible until the collective brainpower of the community engages to find a solution. This metaphor addresses the "perfectionism" that sometimes stops people from making efforts towards social change. In the inspirational stories of ordinary people doing extraordinary things, readers feel the passion that rebounds of the pages. Echoing the human voice for meaning in an increasingly digital and isolated world, this book suggests practical ways for American wealth to be redefined, redistributed, and built upon foundations that include social interests. It is a blueprint for building ethics into today's business values and ventures that will create a social structure of community wealth.
I read it in one sitting, underlined heavily, and have placed 39 page markers within its covers. The inspiration found between its pages has helped me redesign my own business plan towards the greater good. In short, read it.

About the Author
Adam Robinson graduated from Wharton before earning a law degree at Oxford University in England. Robinson, a rated chess master, devised and perfected the Joe Bloggs approach to beating standardized tests in 1980, as well as numerous other core Princeton Review techniques. A freelance author of many books, Robinson has collaborated with the Princeton Review to develop a number if its courses.

Invaluable

Background - I am 13 years out of college. My test taking and math skills were pretty rusty. I want to get into a top 20 MBA program to make it worth the investment. Consequently a great score was very important. I was shooting for 700.
I bought the Princeton book / CD, the Kaplan book / CD, and the Official Guide from ETS. I also downloaded the PowerPrep software from ETS for free. I completely exhausted the Princeton and Kaplan material - test strategies, exercises, practice tests. I did all the practice tests in PowerPrep. Moreover, I did the last third of the questions from the Official Guide (the harder questions are in the back).
I did not take a training class. I took a Kaplan class 14 years ago for the LSAT and was not happy with the investment. Better would be to find a study partner in your area.
My assessment:
1. The Princeton book by far has the better explanations of test taking strategies, as compared to Kaplan.
2. The Princeton questions are much more similar in structure to the real GMAT questions, as compared to Kaplan.
3. The verbal sections of Princeton practice tests are pretty similar in terms of difficulty to the real GMAT verbal section, as compared to Kaplan.
4. The quantitative section of the real GMAT is far more difficult than Princeton practice tests.
5. The Kaplan practice tests are much harder than the real GMAT.
6. The free online tests that come with the Princeton book / CD are a great added bonus.
7. The PowerPrep software is identical in look and feel to the real GMAT, but the quant questions are definitely easier.
8. The Princeton book has the best approach to the writing sections, but do review the Kaplan material as well.
If you want a top score then my advice is to get all three books and download PowerPrep. You also need a lot of time to prepare, particularly if you're working full time or if you've been out of college for a while. I studied and practiced for about 8 weeks. You also need to be comfortable with taking the test on a computer. It is more difficult than on paper - harder to read on the screen, harder to take notes, etc.
First, start with the Princeton book - this will give you a solid foundation. Next, exhaust the PowerPrep software. This will give you a good baseline of where you are and where you need to focus. (I scored 730 and 740 w/ the PowerPrep software.)
Next tackle the Kaplan book, but only focus on sections where you are having trouble. Then exhaust the Princeton Software. (I scored 720 and 730 on the practice tests on Princeton's CD.)
Then do the Kaplan CD practice exercises and practice tests. The tests are very hard, more difficult than the GMAT . . . particularly the verbal. You will score lower on these tests. The practice exercises don't give you enough time to answer all of the questions. Nevertheless, try not to become too frustrated. Keep in mind that you are building stamina and you are improving by seeing new, challenging quant questions. (I scored 640 on the diagnostic, and 680, 580, 650, 600 on the Kaplan CD practice tests, much lower than Princeton and PowerPrep.)
When you're finished w/ the Kaplan CD, start doing the last 1/3 or so of each section in the Official Guide, 20 questions at a time. These are ACTUAL GMAT questions. The explanations are EXCELLENT, far better than either Kaplan or Princeton. Unfortunately some Official Guide questions are repeated from the PowerPrep software.
Meanwhile, mix in online practice tests from Princeton; again you'll have seen some questions before. Don't sweat the recycled material. You won't remember the answers to many of them and you'll have to rework the quant questions anyway. At this point it is more important to understand why you are missing certain types of questions repeatedly and to improve how you attack specific question types. (I scored 750, 710, 690, 730 on the Princeton online practice tests. However, these scores are suspect due to the recycled questions.)
My advice is to take NO tests the day before the GMAT. Clear your head some. Spend time getting comfortable with a template for the writing section. Review specific questions that you've missed in the past - the Official Guide is ideal for this - understanding the correct approach. Relax if you can and get a good night's sleep.
Last piece of advice, bring a snack and use ALL of BOTH breaks. Stand up, stretch, whiz, drink something, eat something. The test is exhausting and you need to use the breaks to clear your head and refocus.
If you do all this you should get a great score. The real GMAT was VERY difficult, even after all of my preparation. I even guessed on a few quant questions that I had no idea how to attack. The whole test went by in a blur. Stamina and timing, however, were not an issue with so much full-length practice.
I ended up with a 760, far better than I targeted and expected, even better than on any practice test I took. This was a pleasant surprise, given how difficult the test was as compared to much of the practice material. However, by using all of the practice material effectively I am now able to look at top 10 programs instead of top 20! Yeah!

By far the best instruction on the market

I'm a GMAT tutor with 15+ years working with successful students. Here's what I suggest for the GMAT:

1. Use the Kaplan CD (as cheesy as the presentation is, the tests are very good). I've heard complaints that the prep tests from Kaplan are too hard, and I have to disagree with the point being made by these students. The only way, on a computer-adaptive test, to increase your score is to test using HARDER, not easier problems. I may kick ass at medium level questions, but unless I want a medium level score, practicing at a lower level hurts rather than helps.

2. Ignore the Kaplan book. Use The Princeton Review books (either Cracking the GMAT or GMAT Workouts for Math and Verbal) for tricks and psychology. Try the Official Guide or Kaplan for extra problems and basic review issues (but use as much of the Princeton psychology as you can -- the Official Guide encourages you to do the problems straight, and that's a huge waste of time). The Princeton tests are buggy for sure (Hello! Princeton Review! Fix this!) but are still fairly accurate.

3. Take as many practice tests as you can. That means Kaplan, Princeton Review, PowerPrep. Arco, Barrons, Petersons, and Dummies are all awful. Don't bother with their instruction or their tests. On Princeton Review and PowerPrep, knock 30 points off your score, just to be safe.

4. Check out your local library. Many public libraries have crazy collections of old, out of print Official Guides, chock full o paper-and-pencil tests going back a good 20 years. By all means, use these -- they're a goldmine of practice questions.

Getting Most out of This book

I bought this book as my first GMAT prep guide because I had heard a lot about Princeton Review series. From the very beginning I felt that writers of this book hate ETS. They kept talking about how ETS doesn't care about real intelligence or capabilities but only about money.

That said, the book was helpful, even though a little inconsistent at times. Here are all the positives and negatives:

Positives:

1) Great Quantitative section. You will learn all high school math quickly and efficiently.

2) The tricks and tips described in this book really work. The POE and Joe Bloggs become part of your problem solving strategy.

3) Covers all aspects of preparation, from the day you buy the book, to the application strategy

Negatives:

1) Seriously flawed AWA section. Everything they said about writing a great essay goes contrary to what ETS suggests. I would rather trust ETS than Princeton.

2) Inconsistencies confuse the reader: Sometimes they talk about moving on as quickly as possible. At other times they advice spending enough time on some questions.

3) Wrong answers: A number of answers provided by them are wrong confusing the reader even further.

4) Illogical explanations are provided for some of the concepts. It seems the writers were in a hurry to finish the book.

CONCLUSION: Worth Buying but you cannot rely upon this one book alone. For top 10 schools, score of 700 is average today. This means you cannot afford to make many errors. Princeton is not sufficient to gaurantee that. You must download the free material provided by ETS at [...] and buy a few other books like Kaplan's.

Needs more than just a date change

I bought this book thinking that it would be a valuable resource for preparing for either the AP Spanish Language or Literature exam. I was wrong.

Concerning the language exam:

First of all, there are no listening CD's and nowhere in the text does it say that a friend or someone else has to read the text. I have another testprep book without the CD's but at least it states that someone must read the listening portiong. I kept hoping to see a mail-in offer for listening CD's in the Princeton Review. There was none.

Second, the picture panels (only 2) are very illogical and nothing like a student would see on the AP exam.

Third, although it offers one practice exam, there is no indication telling me how the exam is scored.

Concerning the literature exam:

The very few test-like questions are designed for the old reading list of 5 authors. The book does not even address the fact that there is a new reading list and what exactly that reading list is.

As far as test prep books go, I'd actually give this one a zero but I was not given that opportunity. I would say that Cliffs AP or 5 Steps to a 5 or even the ARCO test prep book is much more informative. Princeton Review needs to do more than just change the "test date" on their cover.

Peruse other guides before buying...

Likewise in the previous review, PR's review of Spanish Language AP is far too simplisitc to adequately prepare you for the AP test. I 'felt' ready, but come test day (2004), the exam was much harder than anticipated.

Received a 4, only because of a unusally interesting essay prompt and easy speaking section.

*Didn't try any other study guide (so you may take this with a grain of salt), but felt this one didn't do the greatest job of preparation.

Purchase for basic review of verb tenses, outline of test format, mediocre coverage of listening and speaking practice.

(FYI Spanish is one of the hardest AP tests)

Solid offering

Valuable resource. The Proverbs provide little in the way of commentary but the introduction is good, and the book provides good notes about translation issues. The Qeholeth section is more enlightening, and considered by itself would be 5 stars. All in all, a solid offering from an excellent series (Anchor). I wish one day they would publish a "Bible" with all of the books in one codex. That would be my go-to translation.
