The most actable translations I've read

I've been reading and studying these plays for years now, and have read through and worked out of numerous different translations. Curt Columbus' versions of these four mighty plays are exceedingly well done. They are eminently actable and highly accessible to a modern audience. Yes, he does make some small adjustments, notably choosing to call each character by one consistent name, instead of using all of the various forms. Purists may scoff, but it removes a barrier to understanding for a modern theatregoer. Highly recommended for anyone directing Chekhov or teaching it to students.

Fun With Chekov

I was doing a showcase performance that included scenes from the Seagull and the Cherry Orchard. We were given scripts and began working, but it wasn't until I read Curt Columbus's translation that it really clicked inside my head what was happening. This book is a great tool for an actor or just to read, and provides a more modern take on the material. Somewhere between all the English translations lies the essence of the original Russian stories. I recommend reading as many different translations as possible.

Essential Plays by the good doctor Anton Chekhov will live forever in the theatre of the human soul

Dr. Anton Chekhov (1860-1904) was the first major Russian writer who was not an aristocrat. His grandfather had been a serf. Chekhov was a brilliant genius of classic short stories and plays. In this Modern Library edition his four most famous plays are translated into English.
Those plays are:
1. The Seagull: This 1896 play won fame for Chekhov following its production at the Moscow Art Theatre. The work deals with the love of the fledgling playwright Trepilov in love with Nina who dreams of becoming a great actress. Nina falls in love with the famous playwright Trigorin running away with him. In despair, Trepilov plays a dead seagull which he has shot down at the feet of Nina. Two years later, Nina returns to the estate deserted by her quondom lover the scamp Trigorin. She declares that her life has been shot down just as the seagull was earlier brought down to death. Trigorin attempts suicide for the second time and is successful in this effort. The play is beautifully written and the theme of being busy with work is prominent. It is a play about the hard work necessary by a playwright as well as dealing with a tragic love story.
2. Uncle Vanya-This 1899 play deals with the kindly Uncle Vanya who has managed the estate of professor Serebryakov for many years. Vanya comes to realize that the lazy professor is an academic fraud. Vanya falls in love with the professor's lovely second wife Elena Andreyevna. She rejects him as a lover. The inept Vanya then attempts to kill the professor with a gun but fails. The professor forgives him though he agrees not to sell the estate which Vanya feared would occur. Life returns to normal.
3. The Three Sisters-The play deals with the boring lives of three sisters from Moscow: Olga, Masha and Irina who live in a provincial city of 100,000. The three women dream of returning to Moscow; fall in love with various officers stationed in the town but at the end of Act IV remain in their dull lives. The play deals with ordinary day to day existence. The lives of the characters are jejune as they yearn to be free of everyday responsibilities. They remind this reviewer of Thoreau's famous line about people living lives of "quiet desperation."
4. The Cherry Orchard deals with the forced sale of a beautiful Cherry Orchard by an aristocratic family experiencing hard economic times. The plangent sound of an ax cutting down the cherry trees ends the play.
All of these plays were written in four acts. Their major themes are the need for work even in a world where such effort might seem futile.
Chekhov's focus is on families of the lower aristocracy and middle class. He wrote on the eve of Russian revolution as the old way of life was about to pass from the scene forever.

the best edition of Wieland

This Modern Library edition is the finest available paperback edition of Wieland. The cover art is compelling, the margins are wide enough to notate, the paper is of decent quality, the text is authoritative, Caleb Crain's introduction is even better than Norman Grabo's introduction for Penguin, and, as if that were not enough, we finally get a couple of Brown's oustanding short stories--not the lame, too-often anthologized Somnambulism, but Thessalonica, an astonishing, apocalyptic tale of civil strife, together with several other pieces worthy of note. As an appendix, we get the viscerally appalling, absolutely hair-raising, newspaper story which Brown fictionalized as Wieland (one wonders whether King and Kubrick read it too for snowy axe chase in the Shining).

Intellectual Gothic

These days, one rarely hears of Charles Brockden Brown unless one happens to be a literature professor/student. Brown has somehow managed to disappear from the radar, but I smell a revival in the future.

I absolutely loved this book. Not only is Wieland the first American gothic novel (1798), but it combines elements from the seduction novels that were also popular at that time. And more importantly, this work speaks to the precariousness of America as a nation at the time of writing. The book is loaded with metaphors, right down to the names of the characters.

Throughout the novel, battle lines are being drawn between religious belief and the hard science of the Enlightenment. The author, in many ways, shows us the many gradations between light and dark--but most of all--draws a very interesting parallel between Clara and Carwin, the only two narrators. "Wieland" proper is directly followed by another piece called "Memoirs of Carwin the Biloquist"...you must read these two pieces in conjunction in order to realize the full gravity of Brown's genius. If you are willing to commit to a close reading, you will quickly find that things are not always what they seem. You will also likely begin to realize a bizarre parallel between the two narrators, which you may find deliciously surprising if you are anything like me.

The book was actually fashioned after a true story about a man who killed his wife and children in "the name of God." If that doesn't interest you, I don't know what does! If this book tells us anything, it is that we must rely on all of our senses, not just one, if we want to survive. In this work, characters rely heavily on hearing alone...and many pay severely for it.

The Modern Library edition is a bit expensive but it is a terrific copy and includes the actual newspaper article describing the crime---not all of the publications of Wieland do this.

The only other thing I want to mention is that there are some genuinely creepy things going on in this book, and the beauty of it is, none of it is supernatural. The psychology of man is a very complex thing, indeed, and this novel proves it.

A Classic of American Gothic Horror

Charles Brockden Brown's importance in the field of American literature is indisputably very high; thus, how unfortunate it is that his works are so unknown to us today. Were it not for H.P. Lovecraft's mention of him in his essay "Supernatural Horror in Literature," I myself would remain ignorant of his very existence. Brown is arguably the father of the American novel, a brave pioneer in the era of the early Republic. This man set upon himself the noble purpose of writing fiction for a living, going against the wishes of his family and the dictates of contemporary society. Had there been no Charles Brockden Brown, there may never have been a Poe--at least, not Poe as we know him today.
The story is an Americanized Gothic romance. The spirit of Gothic literature pervades the tale, but the setting has been transferred from old castles and courtly settings to a recognizably American rural landscape which is preeminently beautiful rather than spooky. The horrors described so effectively by Brown are borne in the minds of the characters. The female protagonist Clara narrates the tortured history of her family. Her father dies mysteriously, perhaps by spontaneous combustion, ostensibly due to his failure to follow God's will in his life. She enjoys a happy adult life with her brother and his wife until a stranger named Carwin appears and quickly becomes a part of their inner circle. Carwin eventually becomes Clara's tormentor. She, her brother, and their mutual friend Pleyel all hear mysterious, unexplained voices warning them of danger and imparting fateful news on several occasions. Her brother, deeply religious like his father, is greatly affected by these phenomena--how much so we learn later in the novel. Carwin fatefully destroys Clara's life when his evil designs paint her as a harlot in Pleyel's eye. Her unrequited love for Pleyel is now met with his condemnation of her--the agony of the charges against her is particularly poignant in the early American era in which the story takes place. On the fateful night, she discovers Carwin hiding in her home, and he admits to having had murderous designs on her. Her sorrows are greatly magnified the following day by the murder of her brother's wife and five children by none other than her own beloved brother. She blames Carwin for having influenced her brother to commit murder, but we later learn that dementia itself is almost surely to blame for her brother's wrongs. Before the tale ends, she faces a confrontation with both Carwin and her murderous brother, an experience which she is fortunate to survive.
The tale itself is wonderful. The suspense Brown draws out and continually heightens is first-rate. Clara's encounters with voices and human spirits hidden in the darkness of her bedroom are spine-tingling. The language of the novel does make it a work that requires some concentration on the part of the reader and may serve to frustrate some, but I think it greatly magnifies the horrific aspects of the tale. The dialogues of the actors are admittedly overdramatic and drawn out. No one speaks in this book; rather, everyone makes speeches. The protagonist often resorts to long laments of her great woe and asks how she can possibly go on with the story. Despite such dramatics on her part, though, Clara is clearly a brave, independent woman (reflecting Brown's strong and admirable commitment to the rights of women). Overall, the tale delivers a buffet of the passive voice style of writing, which I for one refuse not to love; even the most unimportant sentences are graced with a flowery, beautiful aspect.
In terms of the Gothic element to the story, one cannot say that the supernatural aspects are wholly disproved in the end--to some extent they are, but not to such an extent that Wieland's murderous actions can be explained by them. Clearly, Wieland did hear voices other than those made by Carwin the biloquist. The air of mystery that remains about Wieland's dementia and the causes of it makes the ending more successful than I feared it would be once I learned of the power of ventriloquism exercised by Carwin to dictate many of the related events. My only complaint is with the final chapter, which is basically an epilogue in the protagonist's journal. Inexplicably, it introduces a new character to explain something about a minor character whom I frankly could not even remember.

Dad, what's a droid?

As an elementary/middle school librarian, I already know how this book will play out--it will stay checked out!! The boys in first and second grade, sometimes other grades, ABSOLUTELY love the Star Wars books! ALL of them!! I wish I had the money for every single Star Wars book ever written. But for now, "I Am a Droid by C-3PO" will pacify them.

Would you believe that Star Wars books can take the place of ADHD medication? Give any child with that affliction--that is, if he/she loves Star Wars books, one he/she has not read, and they go into the zone. I have a new poster this year, as one of my themes, that says: Reading Zone. I recovered and added several large floor pillows. After the boys check out their books, they go to the Zones. Some quietly read, but students with books with pictures share and show those pictues and talk quietly about them. It makes me so happy to find books that TOTALLY delight children! "I Am a Droid" certainly will!

What I particularly like about "I Am a Droid" is that C-3PO explains what a droid is, what he does, and how many different kinds there are. "A droid is a mechanical being." The work they do is "often the kind of work that humans would rather NOT do." C-3PO is a Protocol Droid, which means he translates the languages of other beings in the universe. C-3PO is "familiar with over six million forms of communication!"

R2-D2 is an Astromech Droid, a type that helps pilots fly their ships and even make repairs in flight. The scary Droids are the Battle Droids, created strictly as robot battle masters.

Did I mention that girls are beginning to discover Star Wars! At least they can read the old books until I have money for new titles. The biggest disappointment I have as a librarian is finding books students clamor for and not having the money to buy them. In fact, half of the Star Wars books in our library came from my pocketbook.

Filled with pictures from various movies and droid facts, "I Am a Droid" will entertain any Star Wars fan over and over until the information is totally memorized. Not a book to be missed!!

Great book for young readers!

For those of you with young children, my son will be four in a couple months, this book is awesome! He hasn't put it down since we gave it to him a week ago.
This is a short picture book, which is narrated by C3-P0. The pictures are vivid and colorful. Most of them look as if they were taken straight from the Phantom Menace film footage, giving them an 'in the action' feel.
As an added bonus, this book also contains foil stickers of various droids/robots. My son loved pulling them off and sticking them to his clothes and bed posts. Reminds me of when I was four playing with my Star Wars figures and the likes. I will definitely be getting the remainder of the books in this series.
Excellent for kids and parents too!

an essential read for the young fan

"I am a Droid" takes the reader through a tour of the Star Wars galaxy's mechanized characters. As would be expected, everybody's favorite protocol droid is the narrator. C-3PO talks about both the benevolent robots (astromech droids, protocol droids, worker droids, etc.) and the nefarious ones (battle droids, destroyers, etc.). Some illustrations are from stills, but most images draw from "The Phantom Menace." The pages are very creatively designed with respect to the way the images interact with the text. The reading level is good for most second graders. Considering that the book initially retailed for $3.99, the accompanying stickers were by themselves worth the cost. "I am a Droid" is an essential book in any young Padawan's library.

Highs and lows...

It is very difficult to reach a conclusion about the real quality ot this book. Intended to be a general picture of USAAF in WW II, it lacks appendices, a place where much of the lack of information in the book could be informed. It talks very little about the pilots, only about generals, and in some parts it is really a boring reading. On the other side, we must consider the author had only one book to show his point, and he did the best possible.

A fair review of the book...

After reading some of the reviews of this book, I would have assumed it wasn't really that good. However, I have read it from cover-to-cover, and very familiar with the air battles of WWII, and have NOT read any of his other books.

First of all, I'll deal with the last item. I have not read any of the author's previous works. I don't know what subjects he covered with those books, but for the topic at hand, the behind-the-scenes look at the USAAC/USAAF before and during WWII, he does a brilliant job. More on that in a minute.

If you are looking for a book that covers the details of every major air combat in WWII, this is not your book. If you want a book that gives the details of each mission and how it was fought...not your book. If you want a book that ties the details of how the generals fought the war, what they decided to do, how it impacted the overall battles and conflict...this is your book. This book ties together all the details that you never hear when you read the other books...why was Ploesti bombed multiple times at a heavy cost, and what did it really gain us? Why did none of our fighters have the range of our bombers at the start of the war (they could have)? Why did we change from daylight "precision" bombing in Europe to night-time mass attack in Japan (which we disagreed with in Europe)? Why did the Navy control the bombs that the USAAF dropped?

This book covers all that, and does it very well. Given that it doesn't talk about the battles so much as the reasons behind them, it is still very engrossing. Understanding why we did what we did was very enlightening to be able to tie with the knowledge of the specific air battles we fought. Knowing what Arnold, Spaatz and the other generals (and our allies) thought put all the pieces in place. If you want a book that does that, this book is for you.

I also don't agree with the reviewer who claimed that the author "had it in" for specific people. The author covered each person who majorly influenced US air power in WWII pretty well. I feel he respected most of them, but if they had a flaw, he didn't cut them any slack and gloss it over. You get to see what lead each one of them into a position of leadership over the USAAF when WWII kicked off.

Several other reviewers commented that it seemed there was too much general reciting of attacks later in the book (such as when the bombing campaign of Germany began). I didn't find that at all, and if they think this book is bad, they should read some other books where the recitation of each mission becomes very droll after a bit.

If there is a flaw to this book (besides a few very minor items), it is perhaps that he uses generalizations a bit more, but this is a book about the overall impact of the USAAF in WWII, not specific units, people or battles.

At any rate, enjoyed it greatly. Makes a good volume to add to my collection.

Still a good read after three times.

I am a Perret fan, and have read a number of his books. I have no doubt that there are probably incorrect facts, how could there not be? The sheer volume of facts, the historical timeline covered and the myriad of parties involved is rather mind boggling. I am on my third reading. I enjoy how the author encapsulates a lot of events into a readable time line. Do I care how many planes were actually interned in Switzerland during the war and on what date? Hardly. Do I care what their motives were? No I don't. In fact that little side story is just one of many.

Do I fault Perret for not checking each and every fact? No. There is enough blatant lying in the news today to make pointing out a few incorrect arcane facts really nothing but trivial nit picking.

There were more than a few incorrect assertions and facts in the comments too. Such as the letters following the B-25 meaning fabrication location...oh really? The USAF would be surprised to hear that. What was the B-25G....made in Georgia a presume?

I personally like the interactions of the personalities. It is hard not to assume this was an offshoot of the research done on another of his books, "There is a War to be Won: the US Army in WWII" There is some overlap, but a detailed look into the building of the largest air force in the world was probably compelling to say the least.

As to the use of research checking. Even the vaunted, plagiarist Steve Ambrose did it. Which is probably why some of his work was plagiarized from others. I mean really, how do you have time to make the rounds of all the media outlets, write, advise on films and all that without help? Ambrose Inc included not only his sons but daughter in laws and others. You need sweat to crank out all the words he did. Based on what I have read of his works, he put a lot more hyperbole on the page than Perret.

I used to do expert witnessing and on more than one occasion had to critique other so called "experts" documents and interpretations. It was apparent to me that some college student had done the work and the so-called expert had signed off on the finished product. The text was too riddled with conclusions that would not hold up, and formulated statements of certainty that I easily undermined and impeached due to overly broad conclusions.

That is the trouble with using beginners. I am not making excuses for Mr's. Perret, or Ambrose, only that it is understandable that facts and plagiarized passages might make it past the reviewer especially if the "author" didn't do the final review.

All in all, I enjoy his writing style and the way he pulls a lot of facts together. It kind of reminds me of a military version of the old BBC series "Invention". how separate and arcane inventions came together to advance man's technologic progression. In this case it was the technology of aerial warfare. It shows how the USAAF got from where it was in the late 1930's to where it was in late 1945: the largest most powerful air force the world has ever seen and will ever see again.

Best book ever for college expense planning

This was by far, the best book I have seen regarding how the Financial Aid process works. I bought this before 2005 when my daughter was going to UConn. It still applies this year, 2012 when my son starts college. Key chapter - the one that tells you to get your AGI, adjusted gross income, below $ 50,000. That is key. Works like a charm. Get that number low by creating a few small businesses. Sell stuff on craigslist or ebay? That's your small business. Write kids books? Sell Avon? Keep those receipts, save that gas station charge. Those IRS Schedule C's can bring your AGI just a few thousand down to where you need it to be. And yes. Your child will suddenly get Pell grants, subsidized loans, etc. I'm not saying cheat. I'm saying be smart, do what it takes for a few years for your income to be low and it will help your college finances. Schedule A deductions do not work the same way. Scholarships are good, but for every 30 your child fills out, they may get 3 or 4. And they are time consuming from finding them, to writing essays, to getting whatever they want into the application. College kids don't always have time to apply. So, I highly recommend this book to give you a clue into how the whole financial aid process works. I hope a new edition will encourage kids not to leave school with $ 50,000 or more in debt. Find a cheaper school!

An Unforgettable True Story of Discovering Troy

Approximately 15 years ago I bought this book aout Heinrich Schlieman, and his discovery of the ancient lost city of Troy. He studied Homer, and believed the city did exist. In his late 40's he met a very young Greek girl in Athens. He asked her father for her hand in marriage, and her father agreed.The museum in Athens holds not only the treasures he unearthed at Troy, but he found the mask of Agamemnon, and other treasures (the Lion's Gate) showering Sophia with these treasures. I loaned this book, and never received it back. I have looked for it for years. I cannot believe this wonderful book has not been reprinted and available. It is Irving Stone at his best.

Thoroughly enjoyable, well-researched, fascinating story.

A biographical novel of an improbable husband-wife team who unearth some of the major archaeological discoveries of recent times. The book held my interest throughout. I appreciated how thoroughly Irving Stone researched and described life and times in the 1800's. His portrayal of Henry and Sophia Schliemann was thoroughly entertaining. Anyone who likes a good human story and appreciates archeology would like this book

Henry Schliemann, like Alexander the Great, knew the Iliad by heart, the ancient story of the Trojan War immortalized by Homer. He was convinced he knew he could find the city thus proving its historicity. The Greek academics didn't believe him, he didn't believe them. To find Troy was his dream of a lifetime. He manages to marry a young Greek girl, 20 years or so younger than himself, and soon thereafter, their lifetime of digging begins.

I loved this book. In reading this historical novel of Irving Stone, you'll learn a little about modern (1900) and ancient Greek culture. I remember getting a little bored reading the last half of it, but digs are usually that way most times until you unearth something spectacular. The most interesting point to me was in a note of Stone's at the end, explaining that the treasure of Priam, kept in the Berlin Museum, disappeared somehow when the Russians marched toward Berlin late in WWII. Hmm.
