Morningside Heights: A Novel, by Cheryl Mendelson

Following the tremendous success of her first book, a nonfiction work on housekeeping that became a surprise bestseller, Cheryl Mendelson brings to her debut novel the same intensely readable style that made Home Comforts so popular. In the spirit of Anthony Trollope, she roots her story very much in a specific time and place—1999, in an old-fashioned New York City neighborhood that’s becoming rapidly gentrified—and the enormously engaging result resembles a twentieth-century version of The Way We Live Now.

Anne and Charles Braithwaite have spent their entire married life in a sedate old apartment building in Morningside Heights, a northern Manhattan neighborhood filled with intellectual, artistic souls like themselves, who thrive on the area’s abundant parks, cultural offferings, and reasonably priced real estate. The Braithwaites, musicians with several young children, are at the core of a circle of friends who make their living as writers, psychiatrists, and professors. But as the novel opens, their comfortable life is being threatened as a buoyant economy sends newly rich Wall Street types scurrying northward in search of good investments and more space. At the same time, the Braithwaites weather the difficult love lives of their friends, and all of the characters confront their fears that the institutions and social values that have until now provided them with meaning and stability—science, religion, the arts—are in increasing decline. Though the group clings to the rituals and promises of such institutions, the Braithwaites’ imminent departure sends shock waves through their community. As the family contemplates the impossible—a move to the suburbs—their predicament represents the end of a cultured kind of city life that middle-class families can no longer afford.

This intelligent and captivating social chronicle is the first of a trilogy of novels about Morningside Heights; readers sure to be drawn in by Mendelson’s habit-forming prose have much more to look forward to.

From Publishers Weekly
The busy, intersecting lives of a group of Manhattanites living in the staid but rapidly changing Upper West Side neighborhood of Morningside Heights near Columbia University are the focus of this talky, occasionally stilted debut novel by Mendelson (Home Comforts: The Art and Science of Keeping House). Opera singer Charles Braithwaite; his wife, Anne, a pianist; and their three (soon to be four) children are the novel's ostensible protagonists. The book's real hero, however, is their beloved neighborhood, which they fear they will soon have to leave, unable to afford their cramped apartment. They are surrounded by a large cast of the sort of people commonly found on Manhattan's Upper West Side-independent scholars, professors, eccentric neighbors, with rich stockbrokers invading the haunts of the original residents. Narrative drama, such as it is, is provided by the death of an elderly resident of the Braithwaite's building. What were the true circumstances of her death, what role was played by her shifty trustee-and most importantly, who will get her apartment? The incorporation of neighborhood history and description is sometimes a bit stiff, and Mendelson's tone can be stuffy-as befits her subjects-but the accumulation of day-to-day detail, social commentary and emotional insight eventually yields a consistent picture of a rarefied milieu.

From Booklist
In the first entry in a projected trilogy set in the Manhattan neighborhood of Morningside Heights, first-novelist Mendelson homes in on a charmed and charming circle of friends with the zeal of an anthropologist. For the first time in their placid marriage, the Braithwaites are experiencing serious tension. The overambitious gentrification plans of their co-op's new board of directors and the impending birth of their fourth child have pushed the couple's precarious finances past the breaking point. Charles, an opera singer, and Anne, who has turned domesticity into a deeply creative act, must now seriously consider a dreaded move to the suburbs. In addition, they are concerned about their best friends, a brilliant but lonely scientist and an acclaimed writer still reeling from yet another disastrous relationship. Readers will find it hard to resist Mendelson's radiant optimism, for she creates a world in which people naturally find and follow the arc of their true talents, lovers' defenses miraculously melt away, and decency and compassion are richly rewarded. This is one seductive novel. Joanne Wilkinson

Life Among the Intellectuals
By Wendy Kaplan
This such an unusual book, that I'm not sure how to categorize it, except to say that it is an extremely subtle, highly enjoyable, satirical view of the Upper West Side of New York City, where opera singers and scientists mingle with shrinks and Hispanic doormen.
Anne and Charles are one such couple: He, an under-rated opera singer, has a studio at home in their rent-controlled Morningside Heights apartment; she, a former concert accompaniest, takes care of their three children while taking her microcosm of the world very seriously indeed. She thinks nothing of purchasing a thousand-dollar violin for her 3-year-old, but dresses her daughters in hand-me-downs to save money; she serves truffles and caviar at her dinner parties, but refuses to take a cab. One should hate such people, but the very subtle way in which each is portrayed makes the reader (at least this reader) love them instead.
Then there is Merritt, an internationally known writer who can't keep a man to save her life, and Morris, a curmudgeonly scientist who thinks it might be time to get married. Both dear friends of Anne and Charles, they hate each other mightily, but can't seem to find anybody else they like better.
Add to the mix a very odd and hilarious assortment of highbrow intellectuals who take themselves oh-so-seriously, and you have a modern-day comedy of manners that reminds one of Henry James.
I loved this book. It's not for everybody, but I found it refreshingly different and look forward to the next by this interesting author!

Yes and no on Morningside Heights
By Fastwalk
There are many positive things about this novel. The basic idea of exploring a community and how it shapes, and enhances, the lives of its cultured and intellectual residents is appealing. The characters have ideas and some depth. It's nice to see children depicted in a more or less realistic way. It's also nice to see Mendelson further develop her theme of domesticity and its power over the moods and well-being of those who experience it. Reading Home Comforts encouraged me to invest a little more in the domestic realm myself, although often my goals outstrip my grasp.

On the other hand, the book shows major weaknesses that perhaps are characteristic of beginning novelists. Basically, the plot is clunky. The characters' problems are developed and then--ridiculously--solved by means of an expedient that no one could possibly believe in. They inherit an apartment? In Manhattan? From a neighbor they barely knew? Give me a break!

I also felt that Mendelson wandered far from the economic realism of Austen or Trollope. We're supposed to believe that a family with three children, and expensive tastes, living on the income of one moderately successful person (moderately successful in THE ARTS) is able to send two children to private school and plans to send a third to a costly preschool? In Manhattan private schools cost about $25,000 a year, when all costs are factored in. So, for the two girls, we're at $50,000. Plus, they're planning on a $12,000 a year preschool for Stuart. We're at $62,000 just with tuition! And don't they have to plan for college? This is wildly unrealistic. Let's not forget that their domestic ambitions also require spending a lot on fancy foodstuffs. Plus, their cultural ambitions require much money for artistic endeavors, including expensive musical instruments for their children and private lessons.

I can't imagine how this could be possible, given the economic situation that Mendelson outlines. Given that she sets the situation up this way, though, it's even more ridiculous to imagine that this family will be driven from Manhattan to the hated suburbs in part because of a coop special assessment. Such assessments are time-limited. Anne couldn't take on an extra music student or two a week? She has a mom living in the area who adores her children. Her mom couldn't look after Stuart during those few extra hours? Her older two kids are already in school, but she can't step up her (highly flexible) work endeavors a notch? Instead, the family has to bag it and move to the suburbs?

And why can't they move to Brooklyn? This is never explained. I'm forced to conclude they couldn't move to Brooklyn because it wouldn't work for the plot. There are many cultured, musical, and intellectual people in Brooklyn. This family is depicted as owning a reasonable apartment in Manhattan. If sold, that could easily enable them to buy a very decent apartment with reasonable maintenance in Brooklyn. Why wouldn't they do that, instead of (inexplicably) going to Putnam county, which would require the family's earner, Charles, to commute an hour and a half each way every time he needed to go to the city for his job? This is absurd.

I believe Putnam county figures in the novel only so Mendelson can depict the sharpest possible contrast between the culture of the Braithwaites and the bumpkins who live in Putnam County. They are obese, they are inspid, and they don't even accept that the Braithwaite's daughter, with her appalling academic record, would automatically outrank the local yokels in terms of the school tracking system.

Sad to say, I think Mendelson is a snob. She had to set the novel up this way so that she could portray the full heartbreak of the threatened loss of community by a family so culturally deserving as the Braithwaites. Frankly, they might have learned something by seeing how the scorned people of Putnam managed their lives. But no, they're never forced to do this, because they inherit an apartment--and find the proof of their inheritance in a potato bin! This really is not a good ending. The plot dynamics are labored and it's hard to maintain interest when the reader can see a mile away what's going to happen.

To return to the positive, though, Mendelson does have a strong point of view on modern life and how it can best be lived and she situates her characters in a community that, as others have noted, almost becomes a character itself. In my view, in her future work she should think harder about the plot and try to find mechanisms for advancing the story that don't short circuit her characters' growth by solving their problems without requiring much, or anything, of them.

Utterly satisfying
By Pimm
Hatred is not the first emotion that one usually associates

with a favorite book, but for the first 250 or so pages of this 336-page

book, I was convinced that I did, indeed, heartily dislike Cheryl

Mendelson's Morningside Heights. The "typical" Morningside Heights

characters that populate this novel can be extremely irritating, with

their relentless self-made problems, inveterate narcissism, and attendant

(and tedious) therapy sessions. Despite all of the promise for annoyance

that Mendelson's first novel initially serves up, the author manages to

offer something wholly ingenious and even brave: completely unadulterated

optimism. I have yet to read a modern literary novel written for adults

that believes so unrelentingly in everything turning out just as it

should, and it is that quality that makes Morningside Heights one of the

more original and memorable books I have read in quite a long time.

Optimism does not normally strike me as a remarkable, or even necessarily

admirable, quality, but Mendelson wields it without irony, shame, or

sentiment, and the result is a story that is deeply satisfying in an

old-fashioned way. Mendelson's application of a type of storyline

(complete with a mystery, a buried treasure, and everyone getting exactly

what they deserve in the end) derived from classic children's literature

to adult literary fiction is absolutely inspired. Morningside Heights

gives us what we all want: profound satisfaction dressed up in literary

ingenuity.

A timeless story of love, ambition, and struggle!
By Roger J. Buffington
This is a truly a great and classic novel. I do not bestow these oft-overused adjectives lightly. This is a story of deep, rich, and forbidden love, betrayal, tragedy, and ambition. This is a truly wonderful story set primarily in Australia, circa 1915 and then spanning several generations to the post World War II era. McCullough writes a sprawling story which primarily centers on the forbidden love between an extraordinary woman and a good but ambitious priest.
This is the story of the Cleary family, originally from Ireland, who emigrate first to New Zealand, and early on, to Australia. The young Cleary daughter, Meggie, falls in love with the local Catholic priest, Ralph de Briccasart, who is a good and ambitious man who certainly does nothing to encourage this love, but who certainly returns it as he regards Meggie as the daughter he can never have. As Meggie matures, he comes to regard her in a more romantic way. A great struggle arises between this love on the one hand ("the forbidden rose") and his ambition to become a Cardinal or perhaps more, on the other.
There is much, much, more to the story than this, however. The novel transports the reader to Australia, and makes that country a real place to those of us who have never been there. This is also the story of the struggles of the Cleary family, as they battle with, and come to love, the rich outback country of Australia. This is an extraordinarily authentic and moving story that any review (or at least this one) can only fail to do justice.
McCullough's prose is simply outstanding, and her characters crackle with realism--they become utterly real people and the reader will become swept away with this wonderful story. The storyline never drags, and at no point does this novel ever fail to completely capture the reader's attention. This novel is not only a classic; it is a ripping good read! If you have not yet enjoyed this novel, you are in for a wonderful reading experience.

Touching, beautiful saga that leaves reader overwhelmed!
By A Customer
"The Thorn Birds" by Colleen McCullough is my favorite novel. It is in a category by itself and deserves more than five stars. I saw ten minutes of the miniseries on television and knew I had to read the book. I was twelve, and the story of Meggie and Ralph moved me to hysterical tears. I am now 18, and I have read the book so many times I have lost count. Set in the Australian Outback in the years surrounding WWII, it is the story of a girl growing up, learning that "The best is only bought at the cost of great pain...Or so says the legend." The courage and strength of Meggie despite the tremendous hardships of her life inspires me. I must admit I fell in love with Ralph de Bricassart; first with his name, then with the man. (I can only hope to find such a person!) All of the other characters--Fee, Paddy, Frank, Dane, Justine, Rain--are developed clearly throughout the story. McCullough is a genius for combining three generations of the Cleary family into one novel! I still cry when I read the story, for the love, and for the pain. The introductory story of the thornbird is a lesson for life: all sadness will pass, and one day something beautiful will come from that pain. A highly emotional book, "The Thorn Birds" is the best work of this century. It is worth reading to anyone who enjoys drama and romance, as well as suspense, action, and sadness! The movie based on the novel starring Richard Chamberlain and Rachel Ward is an excellent interpretation.

Felt good to read an actual book again. Well written. Makes you imagine you're there, feeling the heat of the weather, smell the smoke from the fire, feel the senseual tention between Meggie and Ralph.

Ralph gets more than he bargained for on this adventure!
By A Customer
Ralph S. Mouse is tired of being told what to do. He's annoyed with his younger siblings. So, what's a young mouse with a motorcycle going to do? Why, take off on an adventure of the open road. With a "Pb--pb--p--p--p" Ralph heads downhill toward Happy Acres Camp to seek the company of boys his "age" and PBJ sandwiches. But the adventure isn't what he expected. He doesn't like the smells of gasoline or the dust and wind that whips his face, and when he finally gets to the camp, he finds that things aren't quite what he anticipates. There is a cat to avoid, a problem kid who sings songs about torturing helpless animals, and he gets caught in a cage. How will Ralph get back to safety, will anyone find the motorcycle he's hidden in the shrubbery? And how will he ever get up the hill that he came down? Anybody who enjoys adventure, or has ever run away from home ( I got as far as our boat when I was 5), will love the excitement of going on this adventure with Ralph.

Review of "Runaway Ralph" By Nathan Smith 3rd Grade
By James A. Smith
The story explains how Ralph runs away because he does not want to be bossed around by his mother or uncle Lester. Ralph lives at the Mountain View Inn. He must get down the steps so he can run away. After he runs away he rides his motorcycle to happy acres where he has to get passed a dog named Sam. After passing the dog he gets caught by a boy name Garf. Ralph gets put into a cage and must convince Garf to let him go. Ralph realizes that he misses and needs his family. Ralph escapes from the cage and convices Garf to take him back home.

The first challenge of Ralph is to get down the stairs at the Mountain View Inn. Ralph slides down the side ramp into prikley bushes. His motorcycle gets stuck with his crash helmet and Ralph lands on the ground.

Next, Ralph rides away on his motorcycle. He find a place called Happy Acres camp and stops to get his favorite meal peanut butter and jelly sandwitches. He meets Sam the dog who does not let Ralph inside Happy Acres Camp. So Ralph has to get by Sam by driving his Motorcycle into the bushes. Ralph hides in a gopher hole and Sam finnally gives up when it is lunch time. Ralph escapes from the gopher hole and goes into a bamboo clump to stay. Some cats find him and try to catch him. A boy named Garf catches him with a butterfly net before he is eaten by the cats.

Garf puts Ralph into a cage, Ralph must escape from the cage and get back home. Ra[ph is not having any fun and is uncomfortable in the cage. He misses his mom and uncle Lester alot. Ralph gets very hungry. Ralph makes friends with a hamster and they talk. Garf feeds Ralph nuts and seeds everyday but Ralph is still unhappy and lonley because Garf never lets Ralph out of the cage.

In conclusion, "Runaway Ralph" by Beverly Cleary tells a story about Ralph the mouse and his difficult journey away from home and back again. Ralph meets new friends and has many adventures but he misses his home and family very much and decides to return to them. My opinion of this book by Beverly Cleary is that it was very exciting and enjoyable to read much like her other book which I have read, The Mouse on a Motorcyle. I even enjoyed the movie. I plan on reading her other Newbery winner book Dear Mr. Henshaw because I saw the play in second grade and I liked it too.

ONE OF THE FEW BOOKS I CAN REMEMBER FROM MY CHILDHOOD.
By A Customer
After many years, this book still brings back warm memories from my childhood. It's one of those books which children can relate to. The "big problems" which Ralph encounters as a young mouse causes him to just want to get away from it all. This decision embarks our fellow mouse on a great adventure in which he learns the importance of family values.
I strongly recommend this book. I'm just recently married and plan to buy it in the near future for my hopefully upcoming family!

A light and somewhat simple mystery, but I would read more by this author
By DF
It's a fairly simple story. I vacillated between "one-dimensional" and "developed" as a description of the characters. To call them one-dimensional might be closer to the truth, yet each one is so skilfully described that the reader finds them quite "real". I found some of the humor in the book delightful, too.

What puzzled me, however, was the way I kept finding myself thinking that this was a story from the last century or even earlier, what with certain concerns some characters showed about propriety and the fact that the main character and an important male character who seem to be good friends are still addressing each other using the titles of Mrs.~ and Mr.~. Yet the story is set in modern times in an old house where a modern young widow has been forced by her economic circumstances to take in boarders and who befriends a "bag lady"; the Boston subway also plays a part, and one character says she has flown back from somewhere to visit her brother. Obviously not set in Victorian times!

I found the ending--for the book is basically a murder mystery--a bit abrupt and puzzling and went back to reason out why -so-and-so did such-and-such and how it could be said to make sense, only to find that a few pages later, the solution to the crime was all laid out for the reader quite clearly. There were places where I had had to suspend disbelief in order to keep enjoying the story, and the same was true of this explanation. I felt that perhaps too much had been kept from the reader as the story progressed, which has contributed to my labeling the book as simple. Possibly this impression was due to the fact that I was reading the kindle version, and since it was on my cell phone, I tended to read it in bits and snatches whenever I had to do some waiting.

Nevertheless, for the humor in it, I plan to read at least one more of this author's mysteries.

Weirdly Dated and Silly
By An Avid Reader
Not only are all the characters extremely thin and entirely implausible, but this book completely lacked any authentic sense of time or place. The language, setting, characters, and social mores alternated from between that of an early-Victorian period (mid-1800's) to perhaps as late as 1930, although the reader is eventually informed the protagonist has inherited a pristine Studebaker she is in need of selling which, helps a bit. The story hinges on a multitude of worn out cliches and ridiculous devices that are meant to heighten the suspense and be taken seriously. If those are what you crave in a mystery, you might enjoy this book, but I didn't. There wasn't a single believable or fleshed-out character in the bunch and the plot was silly beyond belief too.

Just as good as the first book
By jacks
Life moves on for Sarah and Max in book 2. Sarah has opened a boarding house in the family mansion & Max moves into one of the rooms. As you would expect, the plot revolves around the back stories, deaths & activities of the residents of the house. I didn't have any idea of the murderer(s) until the big reveal at the end of the book. The only negative comment I have is about editing, or lack thereof. I found many instances of random punctuation which was confusing in the context of the sentence. Other than that one small point, it was a delightful book!!

Your project went off without a hitch--but somebody else got the credit...You averted a crisis brilliantly--but no one noticed...You came to the meeting with a sensational idea--but it was ignored until someone else said the same thing...

HOW CAN YOU GET CREDIT & GET AHEAD?

In her extraordinary international bestseller, You Just Don't Understand, Deborah Tannen transformed forever the way we look at intimate relationships between women and men. Now she turns her keen ear and observant eye toward the workplace--where the ways in which men and women communicate can determine who gets heard, who gets ahead, and what gets done.

An instant classic, Talking From 9 to 5 brilliantly explains women's and men's conversational rituals--and the language barriers we unintentionally erect in the business world. It is a unique and invaluable guide to recognizing the verbal power games and miscommunications that cause good work to be underappreciated or go unnoticed--an essential tool for promoting more positive and productive professional relationships among men and women.

From Publishers Weekly
Tannen probes the way gender roles shape the ways men and women communicate in the workplace, and how these differences lead to misunderstandings.
Copyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal
Tannen (You Just Don't Understand, Morrow, 1990) describes differences in men's and women's public communication as found within the business setting. These differences appear to influence actual perceptions of worker skills and abilities. For example, women say "I'm sorry" without actually apologizing and tend to use an indirect manner of speech. These styles make women appear less confident, competent, and professional. However, women who learn to speak like men are accused of being aggressive and unfeminine. Written for the general reader, Tannen's work is entertaining and filled with illustrative conversations. It raises many issues of concern to working women, from knocking against the glass ceiling to dealing with sexual harassment. Unfortunately, Tannen's research has not yet suggested any linguistic solutions. Highly recommended for general public and academic libraries.
--Kathy Shimpock-Vieweg, O'Connor Cavanagh Lib., Phoenix
Copyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist
Georgetown University professor Tannen specializes in the seemingly arcane field of sociolinguistics, yet two of her books have been wildly successful best-sellers: That's Not What I Meant: How Conversational Style Makes or Breaks Your Relations with Others (1986) and You Just Don't Understand: Women and Men in Conversation (1990). This second title sold more than quarter of a million copies in hardcover and well over one million in paperback, and it lasted for more than two years on the New York Times' best-seller lists. Her new book is meant as the third in this series of investigations into what we say and how we say it and how this affects our ability to be understood and to get along with others. Here Tannen considers conversations, both informal and formal, in the workplace. She is most interested in gender differences in conversational style but considers age, class, ethnic, and geographical distinctions as well, while arguing that to be successful, we must not adopt or discount other styles, but rather, make an effort to understand and to learn from them. Thought-provoking and helpful
By A Customer
This book makes me acutely conscious of the way I communicate with other people, both women and men (as did "You Just Don't Understand" when I read it several years ago). Without mandating a certain method of communication or telling us how we must change our ways of talking to one another, Tannen illustrates and defines patterns and gives us enough information to work it out for ourselves. I definitely recommend this book to any woman in the workplace who wants to be seen as confident and competent without being labled as the B word.

Important Work - A little too much personal bias though
By A Customer
I gave this a 4 star rating only because of the importance of the overall topic. This book really can help one understand some of the underlying issues that make communications difficult between men and women at work. Ritual opposition and ritual apology are two important topics that are often seen and important to understand. I do believe that the author engages in a small amount of "axe grinding" though. Although, you know what Dr. Tannen? If I were a woman perhaps I would have viewed some of your experiences through a different "lens".

Content is great... presentation lacking...
By A Customer
Dr. Tannen has written several books detailing the effect of gender upon conversational style. This book, specifically, offers insights specific to the work place. The author cites research to substantiate her claims, but she does not bore the reader with scientific paradigms -- she speaks in a language we all can understand. The biggest problem with the book is that it does not seem to flow. Her theories need to be better articulated through the book, and she needs to spend more time making sure that everything does not run together. If you have not read "You just don't understand," and you have a choice between the two books, pick that one. It will give the same information in a more organized way.

An Excellent Survey of Politcal Thought
By Ron Dwyer
This book is a excellent survey of political philosophies from the last days of the ancien regime to the 1970s.
This survey is treated in a very organized way by the editor, Michael Curtis. Each section of the book has a certain theme. Each section begins with a preface and overview of the thinkers whose selections will follow. Curtis, like an excellent professor, exposits the views of the thinkers fairly.
Let me give an example of one of the sections of the book, which illustrates the strenghts and possible even minor weaknesses of this book.
Section XIII is entitled "Theological Thought and Politics." I found this chapter very interesting, for although I consider myself very informed in matters concerning politics, I had previously given little thought to the inter-connection of theology and politics. As the book shows, other disciples have influenced political thinkers--history and economics readily come to mind--and so has theology.
In the preface/overview of this section, Mr. Curtis gives a synopsis of two examples of theological thinking on politics, one Catholic, the other Protestant. What follows, then, are selections that represent Catholic social thought: selections from Papal Encyclicals, and from the Thomist Jacques Maritain; and, for Protestant social thought, selections from the writings of Reinhold Niebuhr.
These selections are chosen--as are all the others in the book--because they represent a major argument of the thinker into consideration which also distinguishes himself from other thinkers. For example, in the selections of the Catholic thinkers, a theme that is stressed is the uniqueness of man among physicial creation--that man has a soul, a spiritual nature, and because of that, is a person, and thus has dignity.
This metaphysical account of the nature of man has consequences in the social realm. While these selections have an optimistic tone, especially from Maritain, this is contrasted with the Protestant social thought of Reinhold Niebuhr. Reading Niebuhr, I thought of the notions of Original Sin, the Fall of Man, and man's tendency to sin. The belief that man is fundamentally good is an error. This belief in the essential goodness in man can lead to political misjudgments. This work by Niebuhr was written in during World War II, and I thought how Niebuhr was vindicated, when just a few years before, the Prime Minister of England had said, "There shall be peace in our time."
This section also points out the possible weaknesses of the book. Perhaps other selections of theological thought could have also been included, and I speak as a Catholic whose tradition is well represented in Mr. Curtis' book. For example, I recently came across some writings of the Russian Orthodox philosopher/mystic Berdayev. Berdayev wrote about the dehumanization of man in the modern world, and in his writing considered the general approach of Catholic and Protestant thinking. Berdayev would have made an excellent addition in this section.
Besides theology, other influences on political thought are shown, mainly from the social sciences, and from history. The dominant schools of thought, such as Marxism, Utilitariansism, Conservatism, are well represented, even sub-divisions of the major schools, such as the revolutionary Marxism of Lenin versus the gradual approach of Eduard Bernstein.
There is a great diversity of opinion presented here; I am a political junkie, so I would not mind even more selections.
The book closes with selections from the late political theorist John Rawls' "A Theory of Justice." The roughly 30 years since the publication of "A Theory of Justice," there have been contributions toward politcal theory. Some examples would be the works of Michael Walzer "Just and Unjust Wars," and "Spheres of Justice; Robert Nozick's "Anarchy, State, and Utopia;" writings in support of the environmental movement; and the impact of technology, especially newer technologies such as genetic engineering to the Internet, from various writers. What will the 21st Century hold?

Great Review of College Political Philosophy
By Jiang Xueqin
In college, while not a political science major, I did take several lectures and seminars on political philosophy. I supposedly read Rousseau, de Tocqueville, Lincoln, Burke, Lenin, etc, but how could the typical college student, raised in technological privilege and surrounded by a rustic solemnity, even begin to comprehend the revolutionary times and chaos that would give rise to humanity's greatest political philosophers? Even if it were the Vietnam War era college students still would not be equipped with life experience, and would not have been tortured with ideas the way the great thinkers were. Reading "The Great Political Theories" by Michael Curtis I was suddenly thrown back into my college days, and a deep nostalgia settled and hugged me. This is really an ideal book for those who majored in political science in college, and who now in middle age at last have the life experience to begin to fathom the political philosophers.

Michael Curtis is an excellent editor, mining the passages in usually thick volumes of work that best represent the philosopher's ideas and ideals. Having taught political science for decades Mr. Curtis seamlessly and effortlessly weave together the modern political philosophers together, summarizing well their ideas and putting everyone in the proper context.

There is a problem in the book that is no fault of Michael Curtis's. The book starts off too strongly, and the momentum is not maintainable. Rousseau, Burke, Paine, and Adam Smith, de Tocqueville -- all strong powerful writers in their own right -- start off the book, and we end with much lesser authors most people have never heard of. Having glimpsed at Adam Smith's prose I'd like to read "Wealth of Nations," and this book will certainly inspire other readers to read other authors.

The Piano Shop on the Left Bank: Discovering a Forgotten Passion in a Paris Atelier, by Thad Carhart

Walking his two young children to school every morning, Thad Carhart passes an unassuming little storefront in his Paris neighborhood. Intrigued by its simple sign—Desforges Pianos—he enters, only to have his way barred by the shop’s imperious owner. Unable to stifle his curiosity, he finally lands the proper introduction, and a world previously hidden is brought into view. Luc, the atelier’s master, proves an indispensable guide to the history and art of the piano. Intertwined with the story of a musical friendship are reflections on how pianos work, their glorious history, and stories of the people who care for them, from amateur pianists to the craftsmen who make the mechanism sing. The Piano Shop on the Left Bank is at once a beguiling portrait of a Paris not found on any map and a tender account of the awakening of a lost childhood passion.

Praise for The Piano Shop on the Left Bank:

“[Carhart’s] writing is fluid and lovely enough to lure the rustiest plunker back to the piano bench and the most jaded traveler back to Paris.”
–San Francisco Chronicle

“Captivating . . . [Carhart] joins the tiny company of foreigners who have written of the French as verbs. . . . What he tries to capture is not the sight of them, but what they see.”
–The New York Times

“Thoroughly engaging . . . In part it is a book about that most unpredictable and pleasurable of human experiences, serendipity. . . . The book is also about something more difficult to pin down, friendship and community.”
–The Washington Post

“Carhart writes with a sensuousness enhanced by patience and grounded by the humble acquisition of new insight into music, his childhood, and his relationship to the city of Paris.”
–The New Yorker

From Publishers Weekly
In this engaging memoir, an American writer living in Paris recounts his experiences in a piano shop tucked into an out-of-the way street on the rive gauche. Because the elderly proprietor refuses to admit strangers to the atelier where he repairs, rebuilds and sells used pianos to select customers, Carhart does not at first get in. But with an introduction from another client and the help of the owner's younger assistant and heir apparent, Luc, Carhart is finally welcomed into a magical space crowded with pianos of all makes and vintages. Soon he becomes one of the favored insiders who stop by nearly every day to gossip and talk about pianos with Luc. Luc's love of pianos is so infectious that Carhart's own childhood passion for the instrument is rekindled. He starts to take lessons again and buys a piano for his small apartment, a purchase that takes some time, for Luc, who regards a piano as a member of a family, prides himself on finding instruments compatible with his customers. Caught up in Luc's zeal, Carhart immerses himself in the history and mechanics of the piano, and he includes chapters on the craft of piano making, the instrument's development over the centuries and the fine points of tuning. In his renewed fascination, he reflects on piano teachers, those of his childhood as well as several renowned teachers of today. Carhart conveys his affection for Luc, the atelier and the piano with such enthusiasm that readers might be inspired to return to their own childhood instrument. At the very least, they will enjoy this warmhearted, intelligent insight into a private Paris. (Apr. 20)

From Library Journal
Carhart's life as an American expatriate in Paris provides the setting for this witty and fascinating account of finding a piano to purchase and relearning how to play. His familiarity with French customs aids in his dealings with and subsequent acceptance as a friend by Luc, the proprietor of Desforges Pianos. A piano restoration workshop by day, it turns into an exclusive local hangout Friday nights. Gracefully shifting from the present day to his youth, Carhart, a freelance writer, provides both technical explanations about the workings of the piano and a history of the instrument. This background information helps place his studies and the remarks of various piano teachers, technicians, and aficionados in context. Similar to Noah Adams's fine Piano Lessons (LJ 3/15/96) with a continental flavor, Carhart's book will be of special interest to patrons with an affection for pianos or experience traveling in France. Warmly recommended for all libraries. Barry Zaslow, Miami Univ. Libs., Oxford, OH

From The New Yorker
When Carhart, an American living in Paris, decides to buy a used piano, he meets Luc, a modest local piano dealer and repairman, who not only sells him one but becomes something of a mentor. As the author's passion for playing is reawakened, he falls in love with the instrument itself: its history, the rigor and idiosyncrasies of piano design and tuning, the unique feel and sound that attend each individual model. Carhart writes with a sensuousness enhanced by patience and grounded by the humble acquisition of new insights into music, his childhood, and his relationship to the city of Paris.

"A Fascinating & Informative Book"
By Joseph J. Hanssen
I can't even begin to express in words what a joy it was to read this book. Thad Carhart has written a book that should appeal to a broad spectrum of readers that includes musicians, piano lovers, novices and professionals alike. Yes, even those who think a piano is just a piece of furniture will learn a lot, and probably be shamed into getting back to practicing once again. If you already own a piano, wish to own one, or just want to know more about pianos & their history this book is an excellent source of information. Did you know that "Fazioli" concert grand pianos costs well over one hundred thousand dollars, and that only sixty are made each year, and there are fewer than one thousand "Fazioli" pianos in existence, and each are essentially handmade? This book is chuck full of information that is so interesting, especially about the 16th and 17th century pianos. There is also a lot of technical information about how piano's work, that explains everything about the instrument, strings, sounding board, etc.
Wait, I can't stop yet. Not only is this book full of history and excellent information about pianos, there is a story, too. Thad passes a little piano storefront in his Paris neighborhood each day while taking his two children to their school. One day he decides to enter the shop to check it out, meets the grumpy owner & is rebuffed, but eventually gets the right introduction, (you have to be referred by an established customer) and the shop then becomes a daily part of his life. Here he learns from Luc, the atelier's master, the history and art of piano's. Luc becomes a valuable friend. He helps Thad find a piano for himself that he loves, a Stingl baby grand from Vienna. In Thad's almost daily visits to the store's atelier he meets many interesting and charming people. They all share their love of piano's, music, and life over a glass of wine. It made me wish I was part of their group.
The piano has always been my favorite instrument, and it has always fascinated me with it's beautiful sound. Yes, I am one of those people who have become lax, and not devoted enough time to keeping up with my piano playing. This book is certainly an inspiration to anyone who appreciates the piano. A wonderful & fascinating story, and detailed history of the piano. Highly Recommended.

Mesmerizing little book...
By C. Middleton
A beautiful musical instrument can be compared to a great vintage wine; one does not need to know all its subtleties in order to appreciate its fine texture, bouquet, and unique taste. Familiarity with art, for example, bolsters one's appreciation of its many forms, and puts one in a frame of mind never to take it for granted. In ~The Piano Shop on the Left Bank~ we are permitted entry into the world of the connoisseur of fine pianos and the magic of superior music. This book describes a re-acqaintance with a love affair of pianos, against the backdrop of romantic Paris and the diverse and unusual characters that make-up this world.
An American living in Paris comes across a little piano repair shop that lies almost hidden from the frantic vagaries of modern life. Something about the little shop captures his attention - a spell is cast, and with some persistence, he gains admittance into a secret world for the initiated only - and his journey begins into that predominately guarded artisan society in Paris which the general, foreign public believe only exists in 19th century novels. This elegant text is written with thoughtful care and attention that displays an attitude of mind that is quite rare.
Because Carhart is honest about his love affair with the piano and the Classic and Romantic music that we associate with the instrument, Chopin, Mozart, Beethoven and Scarlatte, the reader cannot help but remember personal associations with this world. While reading the text, images from my own past concerning music and the piano rose to consciousness - lying at my mother's feet while she played Chopin, being facinated by the movement of her feet as she depressed the foot pedals and the distinct fragrance of the wood. This beguiling book captures many such images and much more.
The book is also unique in so far as the reader receives a history lesson on the piano, from its beginnings in 16th century Italy to its height with the American Steinway to its circular return to Italy, the Fazioli, the finest hand made piano in the world. We actually meet Paola Fazioli in the book and experience the utter majesty and beauty of his creations. To be sure, without question, I felt humbled in the presence of this man and his works of art, following Carhart as he's invited to sit down and play the legendary 'Faziloi 308' - 'the world's most expensive piano' - actually feeling the instruments power of tone through the words on the page.
~The Piano Shop on the Left Bank~ is one of those texts which is difficult to put down, but you do so anyway because you want the reading experience to last. And once the book is finally finished, there is a certain sadness that the experience is complete, however, the beauty of a good book is that you can return to it time and again, entering its world.
This mesmerizing little book is recommended to any lover of music, no matter what genre or classification. Carhart manages to harness music's universality, its common-shared magic that without, life would be much harder to tolerate. This book will enter, in time, the realm of classic. A pleasure.

A charming look into a usually hidden world
By A Customer
The Piano Shop on the Left Bank is a beautifully-written book that will appeal to three different, although probably overlapping, audiences. The first audience is comprised of people who love playing the piano as adults. I recently resumed lessons after an interlude of half a lifetime, and Mr. Carhart's book expressed many of the feelings through which I have progressed in returning to pianos and to piano lessons, albeit far more elegantly than I could ever express them.
The second audience is comprised of people who love pianos. I also fall into this group; I love pianos for themselves. They are unsurpassed musical instruments, and this book gives you a glimpse at their history as objects as well as their existence as music-makers.
The third audience for this book is comprised of those who love to get behind the scenes in Europe, viewing a lifestyle that is hard to find (although it can be found) here in the United States. Luc, the primary craftsperson in the book, is immensely appealing both for his craft (and art) and for his perspectives on the world. He runs his piano shop as he feels it should be run, and because his customers appreciate his worth, he can do so successfully. Mr. Carhart manages to become part of the shop's world, and vividly takes the reader with him.
In short, this is an immensely appealing book that makes the reader eager to rush out and find a Luc for themselves.
