A book at the beginning of the learning curve

This novel features a colorful, descriptive tour of the English countryside. The reader follows a straightforward path which intersects with a cast of characters from the victim's life.
The author explores a group of about ten potential killers, some with high potential and some not, slowly eliminating them one by one. The author explores some relationship and a couple possible rationales for the murder.
The book is simple in its structure and theme, lacking complexity. Intrigue and suspense are limited. In the end, the story line is like many from other authors, just average.
I have read some of Peter Robinson's later Inspector Banks' novels and found them more complex and intriguing than this one. I can appreciate that this novel may represent the beginning of a learning curve which gets better as time goes on.
