Still a Favorite!
By Windflower
I first read this when I was only ten years old and it sparked my deep and abiding love for history, Scotland and the Ottoman Empire. I've re-read this book so many times and yet I am totally immersed in the story each time. Is it completely historically accurate? Who knows? It's a fictional telling of a history that is never provable but it doesn't matter because it exists within the framework of the lives of the most hidden of worlds: the harem.
Too often we in the West think of a harem as a brothel for the sexual pleasure of one man but that's not reality, as this lovely story tells. That a woman secluded in a harem had power and influence on history isn't something that we'd normally think of but I'd like to imagine that she could, as Janet Leslie does as portrayed here by Small. I've studied the history of the time and I don't know that the reality measures up to the interweaving of fact and fiction in this beautifully written story. I read somewhere that readers (and writers) of historical romance are often more knowledgeable about history than even people who teach history at universities. I suspect that's true because I've found factual errors in the textbooks I studied for my degree that I learned in a romance novel!
So read this book to inspire you to learn about the history it encompasses and let it give flight to your imagination for a world that is as veiled as the women who lived in the harem. Imagine the culture shock of a young Scottish girl and at the end of the story imagine yourself, even with a modern education, if you could have adapted to the cloistered life in a harem in the 15th century. If nothing else, Small shows that we need to stop forcing history into a Western viewpoint and accept that there's a rich history to explore once you stop looking through the Western window. Maybe one day the readers of historical romance novels will be the ones who can change the way the East and the West relate to each other and wouldn't that be amazing?
