The Appendix to all of Tor Heyerdahl's other works

An excellent read. Tor Heyerdahl was an academic that believed in first person field research, which is rare among scholars that study ancient ocean travel. His thesis work on Fatu Hiva led him to a chain of evidence that Polynesia was settled from the East, and not from the West, as is taught in most textbooks. He led the groundbreaking Kon Tiki expedition to prove his point. This was only the first of many expeditions and a lifetime devoted to research. This book is the compendium of all his works--sort of an appendix to his other books. If you want to read the stories behind his conclusions, I highly recommend Fatu Hiva, Kon Tiki, The Ra Expeditions, The Tigris Expeditions and his other books. They are engaging, exciting, and hard to put down. If you want the evidence, his argument, and conclusions in condensed format...then this book is for you.

Riddles of diffusion

Although I do not agree with all of Heyerdahl's perspectives or theories (some of which are being tested in the negative with new DNA tracing techniques) this book is still worth reading in part because of one of the most acute studies of the isolationist-diffusionist controversy, especially with respect to the Atlantic side of the debate, where the riddle of the Olmecs and the New World civilizations get consistently incorrect histories. Hopefully this side of the author's legacy after judicious sifting and updating won't be lost. For various reasons, among them the insistence, due to incorrect Darwinian views, on independent cultural evolution, and the speculations of crank theorists, the fairly simple facts of the case are rarely presented.
There are very few historians willing to consider the issues here, Cyrus Gordon in Before Columbus, being one. This is one of those areas where establshed scholarship is determined to not get it right, and the careful arguments in the book are classic and pretty well ignored.

Describes ocean currents as rivers and shows the interconnectedness of cultures "upriver" and "downriver" along the ocean currents.
Essential reading. Get your atlas and keep it handy. Well illustrated, in black and white. This is a keeper.
