Earl Warren headed the Supreme Court during the turbulent years of the Civil Rights era, deciding on many landmark cases and contributing to the society in which we live today, including "Brown v. In his Memoirs, Warren recounts his years as a district attorney and attorney general in San Francisco, and his three terms as California's governor. Writing of his years as a Justice of the Supreme Court, Warren reveals Eisenhower's anger at him for being soft on Communism during the McCarthy era, and a run-in with Attorney General John Mitchell and the Nixon Department of Justice, who attempted to discretely influence a Supreme Court decision.

He also found the book uneven, with Warren's time as California governor and especially as a district attorney "interesting" reading while his term as chief justice and work on the Warren Commission "laconic and thoroughly unsatisfying" (LJ 5/1/77).

About the Author
Earl Warren (1891-1974) was elected Governor of California three times and served as a Justice on the Supreme Court from 1953-1969. His other works include A Republic, If You Can Keep It.

The Lies of Earl Warren

There are about 20 pages in this book in which Warren comments on the JFK assassination. He maintains the integrity (falsehood) of the Warren report until the end. When one reads this section, should one really care what happened from his birth onward. I know I don't. If a man is a liar, how can I trust anything written in this book. He goes over the tired narrative to vilify Oswald, with the loner, misfit, malcontent diatribe. He exalts himself by saying he may have prevented nuclear war by putting an end to outlandish "conspiracy theories". Uhh, you mean the truth Earl? It would be laughable if it wasn't so serious when he says Oswald practiced with his rifle on "dry runs", and says the rifle he had was very accurate, especially against a moving target. But, Earl, I have a question. Are you talking about the German Mauser that was originally found and documented or the Italian rifle in which the scope needed to be repaired just to test fire the rifle after the assassination?
He also smugly writes of a press conference in which he gets tired of questions being asked about a conspiracy involved in the assassination. He says he put a silence to the newsmen when he asked them if they had read the Commission's report. They responded with silence and he felt that he had won the argument. They may have not read the report, but God did. He read your book, and one day you will read His book!
