From Publishers Weekly
A 15-year-old's desire to help a homeless Vietnam vet teaches her about the devastating impact of the war. Ages 12-up.

From School Library Journal
Grade 6-9 There are two climactic scenes in Hahn's new novel: one in which a homeless man is killed in a traffic accident after being barred from the library; and a powerful, moving, and convincing chapter set at the Vietnam War Memorial, in which the protagonist's father finally comes to grips with his war experiences. Yet there is no clear focus to the novel, and no direction to any of the myriad other issues that Hahn tackles: adolescent angst, individuality and conformity, the homeless, Vietnam veterans, library policies on vagrants, and more. None get the treatment that they deserve, and the story suffers as it meanders. An underachieving, show-off type high-school freshman who is trying to carve a niche for herself among her friends and her family, Kelly is concerned for a homeless, possibly deranged man whose troubles are a result of his experiences in Vietnam. This teen, who does well in an honors English class but almost fails other academic subjects and finds refuge in the children's section of the library, who abhors the shallowness of her friends' interests but acts smart alecky to gain their approval, comes across as being more inconsistent than three dimensional. The moments of great writing here serve only to underscore those too-abundant plot elements that do not work. David Gale, ``School Library Journal''

Oh Please!
By Douglas Frink
I had to read this book for a school assignment. The assignments were fantastic helping me get into something deeply and understand something far better than I ever had. But the book choice was not very good. If you're reading this, then you probably know what the story is about, girl needs to write paper on homeless and befriends Hobo. There's ONE surprise that I could totally see a mile away. Shallow and predictable, poor word choice and unrealistic characters. I found this book to be one of my least favorites. Except for every book i ever had to read by Betsy Byars. But besides these two authors, I love reading. I love reading meaningful haert wrenching books that ACTUALLY touck me, like "Flowers for Algernon" or "Walk Two Moons". This book was mediocre at best. I give it three stars because I feel that there is something to be said about how everything ties in a little bit at the end and Kelly is friends with her father. But I'm going to stick with "Lord of the Flies" and "Holes" Thank you very much.

bringing the war home
By A Customer
Why do some veterans return home and rebuild their lives while others bring the horrors back and relive them in their waking and sleeping hours? 14 year old Kelly sees her Vietnam veteran father a worldy success and contrasts it with Mr. Weems, a homeless, emotionally disturbed Vietnam veteran. Kelly wants to help Mr. Weems but he resists all such assistance -- and her father thinks she is wasting her time. Kelly's father does not like to talk about his war experiences and is not sympathetic to the plight of Mr. Weems. The ending of the book is so poignant that I'll stop my review here!

The most touching book i've ever read
By A Customer
December Stillness is one of the best books i've ever read. It is sad and could easily happen to anyone. This is Mary Dowing Hahn's best book. I'm not a major fan of realistic fiction but this book i could not put down. Mr.Weems who is a vietnam vet. had no friends and wanted no friends but was stumbled onto a girl named Kelly. She Eventually wanted to be her friend but he refused her. This book is an award winner and should be read by all who enjoys a great, unpredictable and sad novel. It touched my heart on how Kelly tried to help Mr. Weems and he refused her. All she wanted was a friend. I think this is a great teen novel. It has a great story to it and also a great lesson.
