Great Source for World Music
By vocalise
They say there's no book for teaching music correctly. That's true, but this one helps make the curriculum come together. I love the suggestions given by the book, as well as how the glossary is separated into topics as well as alphabetically. I can use the books very efficiently for world music with supplements from youtube and my college world music course.

History, Travel, and Eating Well, Gladdened by Three Fine Cuisines
By Owl
In "The Frugal Gourmet Cooks Three Ancient Cuisines: China, Greece, and Rome," the recipes are contemporary, as of 1990. This is not a translation of the Roman Apicius (about AD 30) or of ancient Greek or Chinese sources. Smith delightedly tells us about what each of these peoples ate in times long past, their ingredients, ways of preparation, and ways of culinary life, however, and brings us dishes with the fine patina of ancient roots.

Thus, for a very low price (thanks to Amazon, my hard-back copy with dust-jacket & in excellent condition was 1 cent plus shipping), the reader can enjoy culinary history, travel stories, and about 1,000 recipes. Many come from restaurants Smith visited for his popular TV show, mentioned by name in this book. Since there are no photographs, space is used primarily for text. This makes for wide coverage: appetizers, soups, desserts, breads, veggies, eggs, meats, poultry, fish, salads, sauces, and rice. More unusually, dried foods and dumplings get chapters of their own. Without a lot of fuss, these are generally frugal (as one might expect) but not obsessively so.

The book does include clear line drawings where needed, such as cleaning squid. Handsome full-page black-and-white art introduces each chapter. Chapter organization is by food items, such as eggs, and within each chapter, the recipes from China, Greece, and Italy.

Recipes are generally easy to follow aided by introductory chapters on equipment and techniques. When Smith writes, "Chow the onions," we know he means to stir-fry over high heat, tossing the onions in very little oil. The level of preparation difficulty ranges from low to medium. When greater difficulty might be encountered, Smith tells us to buy the otherwise harder preparations, such as getting store-bought phyllo, not trying made-from-scratch phyllo, for a spankopita. The results tasted good indeed and the preparation was enjoyable for the recipes I tried.

Any negatives? A few alerts. Readers should be aware the title means what it says and the recipes are selected in part because some of them do go back hundreds of years. This is the distinction & purpose of this book. Further, if one wants an in-depth, comprehensive cookbook on Chinese, Greek, or Roman/Italian cuisine, there are much better choices. Think of this more as a sampler offered with gusto & gourmand-like enthusiasm. The tone is chatty & informal, not hushed as in a temple of cooking, which might be off-putting to some readers. Also, readers preferring glossy pages and sumptuous photos will not be happy, though the book is quite attractive & well laid-out.

Highly recommended as a fine blend of history, culture, travel, cooking, and of the sociable spirit of eating well in company gladdened by three fine cuisines.

Too easy for difficult NCLEX
By A reader from New York
This book covers various nursing subjects with interactive written review questions, diagrams and easy NCLEX type questions. It also presents test taking strategies. The subjects are presented in easy, straightforward format. However, there are no rationales. Rationales are very important to understand the answer. One needs to refer to other detailed books for explanations. The CD offers 8 full length review questions. No rationales are presented, it doesn't simulate NCLEX computer adaptive test experience because it uses mouse instead of space bar and enter key. Overall, this is ok for a first book to read to get one started to prepare for the NCLEX because it is easy to read. The questions are so easy, it will give one the confidence to think "Yes, I can do it!" This is the first stepping stone to go forward and get into more detailed and complex critical thinking review required to pass NCLEX. However, if one has limited financial and time resources, this is not the book. The presentation and questions are too easy for the difficult NCLEX-RN which requires detailed critical thinking and application.

Don't buy this book!
By A Customer
I bought this book a few days before my exam just to get more practice questions using the cd-rom. I was very disappointed both with the caliber of questions -- much too easy and straightforward -- and the many mistakes on the disk -- it states one answer is right but the rationale supports a different answer. You don't need this kind of confusion when you are studying for the boards. Also the software does not mimic the actual test in terms of keyboarding and format the way the Saunders and Kaplan books do. All in all, a waste of time and money.

I passed the NCLEX-RN the 1st time with only 75 questions!
By Allison, RN
This book provided a thorough explanation of the NCLEX-RN and its logistics, and gave quick yet comprehensive coverage of all the important subject areas.
The best thing was the eight complete sample tests on the enclosed CD-ROM. The actual NCLEX was a walk in the part after the practice I was able to do with this book/CD.

The Raven and the Monkey's Paw: Classics of Horror and Suspense from the Modern Library (Modern Library (Paperback)), by Edgar Allan Poe,

The third in the Modern Library's series of original compilations, The Raven and the Monkey's Paw is a collection of classic tales and poems to engage our fear-seeking senses. The beauty of these stories and poems lies in their readability: ideal for sharing aloud around the campfire or for a quick, thrilling dip . . . under
the covers with a flashlight. The writing itself sends as many awe-inspired shivers down the spine as do the ghosts and goblins on these pages.
Edgar Allan Poe, the master of the horror story and the chiming lyric poem, opens the volume with his best-loved stories: "The Murders in the Rue Morgue," "The Black Cat," "The Fall of the House of Usher," "The Pit and the Pendulum," "The Premature Burial," "The Tell-Tale Heart," "Berenice," and "Ligeia." Every bit as chilling now as on the day they were written, these tales retain their power to stir the reader again and again. Amazon.com Review
"Once upon a midnight dreary" is perhaps the best time to peruse the tales of horror and suspense in The Raven and the Monkey's Paw. For a generation raised on the quick-and-gory thrills of Stephen King or Anne Rice, the literary terrors of a previous age such as Edgar Allan Poe's The Black Cat or Edith Wharton's Afterwards are of a subtler nature. Rest assured, however. Any one of these stories or poems will elevate the hair on the back of your neck. The Victorians, after all, invented the horror genre, and it's no accident that many of their creations, from Bram Stoker's Dracula to Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Grey, have provided the inspiration for successive generations of authors as well as numerous filmmakers.

The stories and poems in this collection are at the top of their class. Take for instance Ambrose Bierce's "The Boarded Window." Though the story is brief--just a few pages long--when the secret of that window is finally revealed, it's macabre enough to stick in your mind for years, and only gets scarier over time. W.W. Jacobs works similar black magic in "The Monkey's Paw," a cautionary tale about being careful what you wish for. And Charles Dickens himself gets into the act with a ghost story, "The Signalman." Even readers who generally eschew horror will find these elegant tales from the dark side strangely compelling. So latch the windows, ignore the "tapping at your chamber door," and let your blood be curdled by the masters. --Alix Wilber

From the Inside Flap
Poe, who was as well known for his poems as for his stories, is also represented by such verse standards as "The Raven," "Lenore," "To Helen," "Ulalume," and "Annabel Lee," among others.

read this or else!
By Der Hammer des Kuchens
In this book you get 8 stories and 8 poems by Edgar Allan Poe and 7 other stories by different authors. These are classic horror stories so they aren't filled with monsters or other types of ghouls and the stories play out slowly. The stories will still give you a more suttle type of terror while reading them. Nothing action pact really happens but it's in the mood of the story that scares the reader. I felt that Edgar Allan Poe's stories and poems were better than the other stories because they gave off more of a creepy vibe than the other stories did. The other stories were good but the only one I didn't like too much was "Afterward" because it's too long.

So if you like 18th century gothic horror stories then this is a book for you but if you're more into Stephen King type novels then this book might seem a bit boring.

Searching for El Dorado: A Journey into the South American Rainforest on the Tail of the World's Largest Gold Rush, by Marc Herman

The real land of El Dorado, deep in the Amazon rainforest, is a far cry from the mythical city of gold: though its soil could potentially yield billions of dollars, Guyana is a nation of “gilded paupers,” one of the very poorest countries in the western hemisphere.

In this adventure-filled narrative, journalist Marc Herman takes us down a supply road in a limping cargo truck, treks into a muggy and muddy mine on foot, and soars above the forest canopy in a skittering plane. He falls in with a rowdy crew of gold miners who measure manliness by the number of times they’ve had malaria, and wear their life savings in the form of oversized rings and huge gold necklaces. He also penetrates the corporate façade of international strip-mining operations, which despite tremendous technological and political power have failed to alleivate the area’s poverty. Searching for El Dorado is an eyeopening look at the scandals, the business, the mythology of gold—reaveling a fascinating, contradictory part of the world and of the human psyche.

Amazon.com Review
When we think of the Amazonian rain forest, the term gold rush does not immediately spring to mind, nor does the latter summon up thoughts of late-20th-century Guyana. In Searching for El Dorado: A Journey into the South American Rainforest on the Tail of the World's Largest Gold Rush, Marc Herman recasts our presuppositions with a fascinating story of adventure and commercialism in post-colonial Guyana. Asking how a country so rich in precious natural resources could remain so impoverished, Herman draws on his acute observation and narrative élan to tell this complex story of fierce competition, environmentalism, history, and journalistic inquiry. "If Guyana was not benefiting from its gold because outsiders were taking it all," he writes, "if Omai was just 16th-century mercantilism promoted as 21st-century globalism--then at least the foreign robber barons should be rich. But they weren't; somehow gold was turning to smoke."

Herman speaks with the precision of a journalist and the ease of a novelist, assembling a cast of marvelous personalities to describe the conditions and consequences that converge to keep Guyana among the poorest of Caribbean countries, despite the existence of gold and diamonds within its boundaries. Wisely, Herman does not advance a personal agenda. Instead, he gives a voice, in breathtaking detail, to the different constituencies that comprise this world of colorful local prospectors, foreign businessmen, and everyday people. Like the prospectors in Guyana, Herman too is on a quest--not to strip the land of gold, but rather to tell this little-known and wonderful story. --Silvana Tropea

From Publishers Weekly
Herman's enthralling report juxtaposes the myth of El Dorado (a hidden city of gold) with the present-day reality of gold hounds scrambling for every extractable gleaming ounce. While Spanish conquistadors may have envisioned heaps of gold ready for the picking, the enormous deposits that started a rush in the 1980s along the Guyana-Venezuela border aren't so exciting: digging them out is fantastically expensive, not to mention messy. Herman goes to a huge mine near Omai, Guyana, with the potential to produce a billion dollars in gold, but learns that "El Dorado, in the end, was real, had been discovered, and was a pile of dirt." He uses the Omai project to portray a common plight faced by an impoverished country blessed with vast natural resources: unable to develop its own riches, the country enters into deals with international companies that simultaneously benefit and exploit. In this case, Guyana allowed a Denver firm to build a $260 million operation with 95% of the proceeds going to outsiders. The operation, which began in 1993, accounted for about a fifth of Guyana's national income, but came at a cost. Millions of gallons of cyanide-rich toxic waste spilled into a nearby river; the surrounding forest was razed; and devastating diseases spread into the once-pristine area. Herman laments these effects, but a Guyanese miner reminds him, "Look what happened in the United States. You cut down all them forests, do the mining... that's what make you rich. This country want to be rich too." Illuminating the complex intersection of economic development, Third World politics, ecology and culture, Herman's lively book will mesmerize armchair travelers and ecology-minded readers.

Review
“Terrific. . . . Each sentence transports us immediately into the jungle, the mine or some dry-goods store deep in the Amazon.” –San Francisco Chronicle

“You can’t deny it; [Herman] is good, and he’s found an interesting subject to sharpen his claws on. . . . He blends in perfectly in one of the funkiest countries on earth.” —National Geographic Adventure

“His ear is terrific: one 45-page chapter, about a road trip with two bickering miners turned truckers, is a comic masterpiece.” —Outside

"Playful and rangy...mixing history, environmental critiques, and swift-moving descriptions of a circuslike cast of local gold diggers. Parts of Searching for El Dorado have the gleeful momentumof an adventure story . . . [but it] ultimately calls the entire mining enterprise into question." —The Village Voice Literary Supplement

A great read!
By Amazon Customer
I was puzzled when my friend gave me a copy of this book; had I ever expressed an interest in gold or indeed in South America? The mystery was solved when my gaze rested on the author's name, an old university friend. Not knowing much about Marc's politics or his writing style, I was a afraid that the book would be some tirade against big business and globalization. Refreshingly, I discovered an engaging search for answers in a country that seems to only have questions. The book is interesting, provocative, and well-balanced journalism. But even better then that is Marc's humorous description of his own journey, his adventures, and his eye for details. I am not sure I reccomend traveling "Marc-style" but I sure do enjoy the product of his adventures!

The right type of travelogue
By Guy R. Hearn
There are basically 3 kinds of travel writing

1. The writer visits an exotic location, finds the scenery appealing, the locals quaint and whimsical but good hearted, has some sort of personal ephiphany, and writes a condescending, patronising book about all the amusing things that happen to him. Possibly he later sells the film rights. Call this the "My autumn in Europe" type book

2. The writer maximises to an adsurd level the level of discomfort in order to have a "real travel experience" and is found quaint and whimsical but good hearted by disbelieving locals. Call this the "Down The Nile on Crutches" type book

3. The writer goes somewhere he knows little about and actually learns something, which he manages to pass on to the reader

Thankfully this is the third type. Herman doesn't find Guyana quaint, he finds it on the brink of collapse with little prospect of future improvement, increasingly hopeless. Its unlikely that this book has done anything to boost the fledgling Guyana tourist industry - indeed he'll be lucky if they let him into the country again

Herman reveals the extent of the Amazon gold rush, but also its utter futility, with neither big multinationals nor small miners able to turn even a small profit. But he also reveals the desperate lack of choices that will continue to drive so many down the mines to the deteriment of both their, and the nation's health

Herman vividly brings to life the people he meets in his (genuinely) arduous travels and while his writing is often laugh out loud funny, it never belittles its subjects.

Before reading this I knew little about Guyana or about the gold rush. I now feel like I do. I heartily recommend this book

So funny, so smart
By A Customer
I want Marc Herman to be my travel guide, whenever I sit back in my armchair -- or whenever I enter a new land. His easygoing style is seductive, but the energy of his insight into the culture is what makes him so appealing.
How can a country so full of gold have so many problems? Journey with Marc and find out; and have a blast along the way.

Murphy's Boy, by Torey Hayden

His name was Kevin but his keepers called him Zoo Boy. He didn't talk. He hid under tables and surrounded himself with a cage of chairs. He hadn't been out of the building in the four years since he'd come in. He was afraid of water and wouldn't take a shower. He was afraid to be naked, to change his clothes. He was nearly 16.

Desperate to see change in the boy, the staff of Kevin's adolescent treatment center hired Hayden. As Hayden read to him and encouraged him to read, crawling down into his cage of chairs with him, Kevin talked. Then he started to draw and paint and showed himself to have a quick wit and a rolling, seething, murderous hatred for his stepfather.

Phoenix Rising
By BeatleBangs1964
When readers are first introduced to Kevin, then 15, he is a ward of the state in a psychiatric facility. He has barricaded himself under a table and his voice had been unheard since his admission to the place when he was seven.

In time, Kevin is drawn out from under the table and begins using materials provided during therapy sessions to free himself from his internal torment. Kevin, described as a skilled artist, used drawing to present events that took place early in his life. In time, Kevin begins to speak and he discloses an early life replete with brutality and horror; he and his sisters were sexually abused and beaten by their stepfather and one younger sister was beaten to death. Kevin and this sister were especially close and it is through dogged determination that the child's school, death and social services records are unearthed. The girl had been "buried" twice: the first time when she was killed and the second time when the social services bureaucratic agencies involved in Kevin's case felt that disclosure of the child's murder would preclude him from being viewed objectively. This reasoning seems bizarre and is never explained.

Kevin's natural expression was often poignant; in one passage, he talks of "mirror-ghosts;" people who have, in his words died of "heart rot" because they have never been loved. The song "Where is Love" from "Oliver!" would be the song to underscore a good portion of this book.

Kevin's progress accelerates; he learns to swim over the summer after some setbacks; he works with another child who is part of the Big Sister/Big Brother program and the pair appear to work well together; by fall of that year, Kevin was given a clean bill of health and promoted to a group home. Sadly, this is a short lived success after Kevin breaks a worker's arm after the latter tells him he can never be normal. The boy then serves the better part of 10 months in a hospital. Once released, he is assigned to a boys' ranch, which did not sound like the place to meet his needs.

Over time, after contending with inappropriate placements and setbacks, Kevin is welcomed into a group home where he can serve as a mentor to his dorm mates. He insists on being enrolled in a public high school, which his new guardians endorse and from there, his progress is truly heartwarming. Like the mythical phoenix bird, Kevin literally arose from the ashes of his past and strove to create a better life for himself.

will make you angry
By E.M. Bristol
Teacher Torey Hayden takes an unusual case, a fifteen year old boy named Kevin who doesn't speak, or is "electively mute." With Torey's help, Kevin begins to speak again. His progress at the hospital, however, is erratic because of horrifying circumstances that brought him into custodial care. His sister was beaten to death by their alcoholic father, and the father also physically abused Kevin, and urged his sisters to abuse him sexually as well.

As one might expect, the road to recovery is not smooth at all. Kevin is given several placements with foster parents and other caretakers which do not work out. However, with Torey's aid, Kevin begins taking small steps toward becoming independent. In the end, he goes to high school and survives the academic and social challenges. He also finds a group home that caters to mentally disabled adults and does well there. An inspiring story.

Not as good as One Child, but okay
By Kimimela
Well, I love Torey's work, I really do. But, Part I of Murphy's Boy was boring and somewhat hard to follow. In one paragraph, she'd be somewhere with someone and the next would be a totally different time and scene. It jumped around like a soap opera, but nowhere near as bad.
Part II was much better, but too expedited. It was almost like saying in one chapter someone found out they were pregnant and in the next the baby had been born--- nothing said of the pregnancy in between. Part III ended too soon and I really didn't like the ending.
It left more questions than it answered in some ways. For instance, what became of Kevin's real father? He only
mentions him once in the book. And were the girls his full or half-sisters?
Personally, I wanted to knock his mother to the moon !!! How could anyone, especially a mother, let someone MURDER her child and stand by and do NOTHING? And, then, take the evil, brutal, twit back and allow him to abuse the others AND in the end give up her children to the state so she didn't have to give up that horrible man??????
I love Torey's non-fiction work. This was not my favorite, but it really shows Torey's spirit. She never gave up long after even the most long-suffering of us would have.

Angels 101
By Daniel Jolley
This book is basically a layman's guide to angels. Graham uses the Bible as his only source of information on the subject, and he does a very good job of describing the heavenly hosts to readers. The book was written largely in response to the proliferation of books centering around demonology and New Age ideas in recent years; as he points out, there really aren't many satisfying treatments available of angels per se. Sadly, modern man's conception of angels has been shaped and largely determined by popular entertainment; Graham effectively delineates truth from lies and imaginative thinking. The book is meant to inspire and comfort as much as it is to inform the reader. Graham offers many penetrating insights into the subject, but, most importantly, he lays out the basic facts about angels as they are revealed in the Bible. He describes a hierarchy of angels that is more extensive that I realized--at the top is the archangel Michael, followed by Gabriel, then cherubim and seraphim, and finally a myriad of different principalities, authorities, etc. Angels, Graham argues, perform different functions but serve only to glorify God and assist man in attaining salvation.
While the concept of a hierarchy among angels seems somewhat strange, given that it necessarily implies varying levels of power and authority and, thus, inequality among these divine beings, Graham does an excellent job of explaining what angels do and, more interestingly, what they cannot do. Angels, first and foremost, praise the Lord and work for Him in all things; they serve as His divine warriors and as the protective agents of every Christian in the world. Interestingly, angels cannot preach to man or take any other action to compel man to repent of his sins because each man must make his own decision for or against Christ. One of the explanations Graham suggests for angels' inability to actively win human souls is the fact that angels do not know sin and cannot relate to the miraculous conversion from sin to faith in Christ. What I find most interesting about angels, and this is a notion borne out by Graham's writing, is the fact that they will be subordinate to saved human souls in heaven. Though born wretched, those men and women who accept God's salvation will live eternally in a closer relationship with God than the sinless angels do.
Many readers will find the information on Lucifer and his fall from heaven the most interesting section of the book. I certainly cannot understand how any angel, created without sin, can somehow fall victim to pride (which Graham implies is the seedbed of all sin), especially to the point where he will challenge God for His throne and, even more amazingly, convince up to one third of all angels to join with him in the revolt. Graham does a good a job as anyone at explaining the origins of Satan (as well as the inevitable defeat of the prince of lies).
The true purpose of the book is to win new souls for the Lord and to offer comfort and inspiration for those already redeemed. Graham makes the case that, for Christians, angels are always over our shoulder watching out for us, that they love each of us and rejoice each time a new soul is won, and that they will be there to guide us directly to Heaven once we pass away. The only weakness of the book is, ironically, also its greatest strength--it is written so that anyone can understand it. While I might turn away from a hefty theological tome, I would very much like to see a more detailed, scholarly treatment of the subject, especially by such an authority as Billy Graham.

Informative and Scripturally Based
By Dr. W. G. Covington, Jr.
The Bible tells Christians that we have angels watching over us. Billy Graham focuses on that truth in this book. In the first chapter he discusses the reality of the spirit world and goes on to offer a rationale for a book of this nature. The second chapter is a progression of that thought as he describes the reality and nature of angels. Chapter 3 goes on to look at both the visible and invisble manifestations of angels. Subsequent chapters discuss the differences between humans and angels, angelic organizational structures, angelic rebellion, the ministry of angels, angels as God's agents, and Angels and the Gospel. The book continues by discussing angels involvement in the earthly life of Jesus. From there he goes on to talk about the role of angels in prophecy. A chapter on angels and death is included, as is a section on angels as spiritual spectators. The concluding chapter has to do with angels in the lives of Christians today. I highly recommend this book. He keeps angels in proper perspective, i.e., they point to Jesus.

Quick look at Biblical Angels
By Micah Hart
If you are looking for a quick read, high level overview on the subject of angels as the occur in the Bible, this is a good choice. Billy Graham only discusses angels as they are shown in the Bible and does not draw from other sources for his discussion. Therefore, this is a good 'first read' to get an overall sense of why angels exist and what they do. Each chapter is set up as a stand alone so you can skip to sections that most interest you without missing relevant information. (I highly recommend the chapter on 'The Angels and Death' for anyone suffering from a loss.) This book is not meant to be a comprehensive analysis for the more involved student. It is more for the layperson who would like to understand the subject better, but without all the 'dry' academia that is sometimes associated with more in depth studies. Read it for enjoyement. Read it for pleasure. Read it for encouragement. And know that God is watching over you...

A fun favorite
By frisky2000
Our toddlers love Elmo, and we have lots of Sesame Street books, most of which keep their attention past the first few lines. This one does the job right through till the end, thanks to the adventure of finding Elmo's little blanket. Each page has a flap and a question as to where you can find Elmo's beloved blanket, and your youngsters should enjoy lifting and discovering on every page. And of course, all our favorite characters join in the hunt ~ Big Bird, Grover, etc.

We usually don't go for lift-the-flap books since they tear so easily, but these are sturdier than most others and have withstood reading for several months so far!

Sturdy with lots of interesting pictures
By PediatricianMom
My one-and-a-half year old daughter loves this book. Even though she knows what is under each flap, she still flips each flap with excitement. There lots of pictures of common items, like a ball, banana, fish, etc... so the book is helpful in teaching and reinforcing new words. The book is has many pages and keeps my daughter's attention for a long time. It is sturdy and not a single flap has torn, in spite of her constant use. A+.

Lots of fun, and a MUST for plane rides with toddlers!
By Shashi
I took this on the plane with my daughter recently. Anyone who flies with a little one on your lap knows it's a challenge keeping them entertained - and yourself sane - for the whole flight. So I can't say enough about this book - because it absolutely saved us!! It probably bought me an hour of calm, quiet reading time total (going and coming back). She is a huge Elmo fan and loves this book. The story is a cute one where your chlid can help Elmo find his blanket. It has all the favorite characters in funny scenarios with pages that have many different and fun things to look at, and my daughter loves lifting the flaps and finding out what's inside -- over and over (thank God!!). So I highly recommend this book --particularly for plane rides or any time you need your kid to stay calm and quiet. She loves sitting and "reading" it at home too. I am looking forward to buying more "lift the flap" Elmo/Sesame books for her.

Blood's a Rover, by James Ellroy

America's master of noir delivers his masterpiece, a rip-roaring, devilishly wild ride through the bloody end of the 1960's. It's dark baby, and hot hot hot.

Martin Luther King assassinated. Robert Kennedy assassinated. Los Angeles, 1968. Conspiracies theories are taking hold. On the horizon looms the Democratic Convention in Chicago and constant gun fire peppers south L.A. Violence, greed, and grime, are replacing free-love and everybody from Howard Hughes, Richard Nixon and J. Edgar Hoover to the right-wing assassins and left-wing revolutionaries are getting dirty. At the center of it all is a triumvirate: the president’s strong-arm goon, an ex-cop and heroine runner, and a private eye whose quarry is so dangerous she could set off the whole powder keg. With his trademark deadly staccato prose, James Ellroy holds nothing back in this wild, startling and much anticipated conclusion to his Underworld USA trilogy.

Amazon.com Review
Amazon Best of the Month, September 2009: James Ellroy's L.A. Quartet novels chronicled a cynic's take on Los Angeles cops and robbers, carving a dark and creepy nook for the author in the world of crime fiction. With Blood's a Rover, Ellroy completes his Underworld USA trilogy, an epic reinvention of American history, politics, and corruption. This book comes out firing: Ellroy's hipster prose--inimitable for its high style and spectacular energy--snaps and surges through more than 600 pages like black electricity, shocking the gentle reader from page one. Opening with a heist scene rendered as coldly violent as anything from Sam Peckinpah's most sociopathic fantasies, the story hurls itself across an improbable crazy quilt plot, including Howard Hughes's Vegas power-play, political abuses and machinations in Hoover's FBI, and the mob's ubiquitous shadow, darkening everything from JFK's assassination to Nixon's 1968 Presidential campaign. Another audacious effort from a one-of-a-kind talent, Blood's a Rover is thrilling and exhausting, a gloriously guilty pleasure. --Jon Foro

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Ellroy concludes the scorching trilogy begun with 1995's American Tabloid with a crushing bravura performance. As ever, his sentences are gems of concision, and his characters—many of whom readers will remember from The Cold Six Thousand and from American history classes—are a motley crew of grotesques often marked by an off-kilter sense of honor: stone bad-asses, in other words, though the women are stronger than the men who push the plot. The violence begins with an unsolved 1964 L.A. armored car heist that will come to have major repercussions later in the novel, as its effects ripple outward from a daring robbery into national and international affairs. There's Howard Hughes's takeover of Las Vegas, helped along by Wayne Tedrow Jr., who's working for the mob. The mob, meanwhile, is scouting casino locations in Central America and the Caribbean, and working to ensure Nixon defeats Humphrey in the 1968 election. Helping out is French-Corsican mercenary Mesplede, who first appeared in Tabloid as the shooter on the grassy knoll and who now takes under his wing Donald Crutchfield, an L.A. peeping Tom/wheelman (based, curiously, on a real-life private eye). Mesplede and Crutchfield eventually set up shop in the Dominican Republic, where the mob begins casino construction and Mesplede and Crutchfield run heroin from Haiti to raise money for their rogue nocturnal assaults on Cuba. In the middle and playing all sides against one another is FBI agent Dwight Holly, who has a direct line to a rapidly deteriorating J. Edgar Hoover (the old girl) and a tormented relationship with left-wing radical Karen Sitakis, and, later, Joan Klein, whose machinations bring the massive plot together and lead to more than one death. Though the book isn't without its faults (Crutchfield discovers a significant plot element because something told him to get out and look; Wayne's late-book transformation is too rushed), it's impossible not to read it with a sense of awe. The violence is as frequent as it is extreme, the treachery is tremendous, and the blending of cold ambition and colder political maneuvering is brazen, all of it filtered through diamond-cut prose. It's a stunning and crazy book that could only have been written by the premier lunatic of American letters. (Sept.)

From Bookmarks Magazine
With Blood's a Rover, Ellroy completes his epic of revisionist history, and critics agreed that it is a worthy finale. Action-packed scenes, narrated in Ellroy's trademark staccato prose, hurl the reader along towards a shocking conclusion, but this is no conventional thriller. Ellroy dissects people and events familiar to history buffs and reinvents them within the sordid underbelly of the mid-20th century, interspersing the narrative with invented police statements, transcripts, and FBI reports. While some critics complained of flat characters and repetitive plot twists, nearly all enjoyed this conspiracy- and carnage-filled tale of power and corruption. Ellroy's blunt language, raw depictions of violence, and relentless pessimism may not be to everyone's taste, but those with stronger stomachs will be amply rewarded.

Malice in Wonderland
By The Ginger Man
The Underworld USA trilogy began in 1995 with publication of American Tabloid and covered events in the early sixties. Five years passed before readers could dig into The Cold Six Thousand. Blood's a Rover (title taken from a poem by Houseman) begins shortly after the King and Kennedy assasinations in 1968 and takes us through the Chicago riots and Nixon's elections. Like previous entries, the book delivers an alternate, underground history of the partnership between Hoover's FBI and various criminal elements. Ellroy entices us through the looking glass to demonstrate the impact of that unsavory alliance on modern political history. Characters from previous books abound (Dwight Holley, Wayne Tedrow) as well as public figures both significant (Nixon, Howard Hughes) and obscure (Sal Mineo)

Ellroy's Hoover is not much concerned with organized crime. Instead he is obsessed with student protesters, civil rights demonstrators, non-existant domestic Reds, and any politician he believes to be aligned with these groups. In this dark world, former cop Wayne Tedrow meets with mob heads after a drop off of cash to candidate Nixon and notices on the wall, a photo showing one of the gangsters playing golf with Pope Pius.

The author's style is stacatto, high-adrenaline narrative alternating with newspaper headlines and supposed excerpts from personal journals. A chapter begins: "Dwight read files. A radio spritzed the news. Nixon and Humphrey grubbed for votes and see-sawed poll-wise. Jimmy Ray and Sirhan Sirhan fermented in custody." Using this approach, Ellroy packs a great deal of action and emotional impact into a few paragraphs. Over hundreds of pages, the result can be exhausting.

I found all 3 books hugely entertaining as literature and utterly unnerving as political myth-making. The reader dismisses much of it as bizarre speculation. However, after years of journalistic revelations such as White House sanctioned Mob attempts on Castro's life, the reader finds himself asking if parts of Ellroy's story sounds more real than various official histories.

The fictional narrator begins this final nightmare volume by telling us "This book derives from stolen public files and usurped private journals. It is the sum of personal adventure and forty years of scholarship...I did what I did and I saw what I saw and learned my way through the rest of the story." Conspiracy tales such as this can be oddly comforting. They replace the horror which results from chance and the grand indifference of the universe with tragedy that is the product of the guiding hand of malice. Evil, while monstrous and frightening, can be opposed. Accident must be endured.

The immense appeal of the Underworld Trilogy derives as much from this replacement of chaos with dark design as it does from Ellroy's unique narrative gifts. It is an appeal that produces excitement if it is understandably light on comfort.

Brilliant conclusion to the trilogy plays with the reader's expectations
By Stuart Neville
First off, I'll admit some bias here. I'm a big Ellroy fan, and American Tabloid is neck-and-neck with Tom Wolfe's Bonfire of the Vanities for my favourite novel of all time. There appear to be a couple of Ellroy haters among the reviewers so far, and fair enough, he's a love-or-hate writer. If you don't like Ellroy, you won't like Blood's a Rover. If, like me, you do like Ellroy, then this book will fulfil yet confound your every expectation.

I won't bother with outlining the plot other than to say it's as tangled and propulsive as you'd expect from Ellroy. What some may want to know is how it compares to American Tabloid and The Cold Six Thousand. It's probably closer in tone to the former, lacking the latter's highly stylised presentation. It's a smoother read, in other words, but still requires some investment on the reader's part. That investment is rewarded many times over, however, and things barrel along at a wonderful page-turning rate.

There are two main distinctions between this and Ellroy's earlier work. The first is his portrayal of women. While there are some recognisable tics, such as the younger male characters' borderline oedipal fixations on older women, and a tendency for those same women to be physically or pschologically scarred, Ellroy this time gives his female characters more room to breathe and develop. They are more than objects of obsession there to torture the male characters.

The other difference is the heart of the piece; one could argue Ellroy's work perhaps lacked emotional depth, but not so with Blood's a Rover. Oddly for an author of his vintage, this is perhaps the most mature book of his career.

It's also his most personal novel since The Black Dahlia. One character, Don Crutchfield, is ostensibly based on a real life private eye still alive and working today, but the character on the page is clearly based on Ellroy's young self. The book may also leave you questioning your idea of the author's politics. He has wilfully played up his right wing public persona, but the politics of Blood's a Rover (and when looking at the trilogy as a whole) skew left of centre.

Some might accuse Ellroy of putting style over substance, but one aspect of this novel clearly illustrates his skill as a straight-up storyteller. It's when he starts playing with your expectations of the book, turning the story on its head so that you can't even take the narrative itself at face value, that you realise why he is the greatest living crime writer. It's virtuoso stuff.

I was lucky enough to read an advance copy of this book back in April, and it has stuck with me since then. It's a brilliant conclusion to the Underworld USA trilogy, and any Ellroy fan will be seduced once again by the master of the hard word.

Third Best of the Trilogy
By T. Karr
In this final installment of the "Underworld U.S.A." trilogy Wayne Tedrow, Dwight Holly and the boys are back carrying out their portion of an American history that might have been. They have their hands in the cover ups of the Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King assassinations, Howard Hughes' purchase of Vegas casinos, and the mob's Caribbean connections. And that's just for starters.

The plot loosely centers around an armored car heist in Los Angeles involving emeralds and millions of dollars. Holly, L.A. police officer Scotty Bennett, and a young wheelman named Donald "Peeper" Crutchfield are all trying to figure out the robbery (when they are not carrying out CIA directives, mob directives, or trying to figure out the mysterious women in their lives).

I really liked "American Tabloid." I loved "The Cold Six Thousand." I cannot say the same for "Blood's A Rover." This novel just doesn't quite have the energy level of the first two. It is an amazing piece of work, but there is just so much going on and there is just too much repetition. (How many times does the reader have to be told that a character is getting amped up to read through their heist files one more time? My guess is that I saw that scene played out at least a dozen times.)

The characters even seem somewhat repetitious. Despite varying backgrounds and ethnicities, they all have the same amazingly vast vocabularies for people who are essentially self-centered, schemers who are prone to extreme violence.

Really, I wanted to like "Blood's A Rover," but it is just okay. I can only recommend this novel to those who have read AND enjoyed "American Tabloid" and "The Cold Six Thousand."
