Really put that time period into perspective. I had read John Adams before, but couldnl't get into it. After Those Who Love, I read it with a lot better understanding.

John Adams - A Joy to Know

When I first read this book many years ago, I fell in love with John Adams. Stone brought to life not only this most honorable of our founding fathers, and his beloved wife Abigail, but other "characters" of our nation's revolutionary history such as Samuel Adams, a rabble-rouser who was afraid to ride horses. So many intimate details of John and Abigails's life together were brought to this novel that you feel as though you know and love them both. You can't go wrong with this one.

Super interesting history & a darn good read!

Those who Love, by Irvin Stone....yet another old book of my parents that I recently found out in the garage and started reading. I started it, thinking I'd give it a few pages, but quickly I was hooked.
Told through the eyes and voice of Abigail Quincy Adams, Those Who Love is a fascinating ride though the late 1700's. A self-educated girl who wanted to marry a man "who would always surprise me," she finds herself attracted to the stocky, serious, always-reading-a-book, about to be lawyer, young John Adams. The courtship and early years of their lives are much fun to read about, especially so because of all the other important historical characters who wander in and out of this story....fiery Samuel Adams, wise old Ben Franklin, courageous and strong George Washington, bold and often reckless Paul Revere, and a host of others.
I confess to never actually having read one of Irvin Stone's novels before, and I have to say, I was deeply impressed at how well he mixed great matters of national importance right in with problems with the children, the cattle, the bill collectors, the muddy roads, and all the so true personal feelings that go on between husband and wife and all their family members.
This is above all a story of struggle, nothing ever seems to come easy to the Adams; they are always short of money, they are forced to move over and over, their children fail them, friends betray them, and yet they remain bonded tightly in their love and appreciation of each other...and this pulls them through one crisis after another. Some of the historical happenings, such as Washington's first victory after years of defeats, these, as seen though Abigail's eyes, ah, they are so powerful, so moving.
If you want a good long book to read, one where you will learn a great deal about how the United States was born and created...and at the same time where you'll be marvelously entertained for many night's reading...then I highly recommend Those Who Love.
