Short but strong collection of poems

This 1959 book features approximately 100 poems as well as some reproductions of Chinese prints. The poems are translated from Chinese; one small drawback of the book is that the original Chinse does not appear. The poems are ostensibly love poems, but they are not love poems in the Western sense; most of the poems talk of a lover who has gone away, not the qualities of the other person which inspire love.
The translations are excellent- the translation of "You and I", for example, is much better than that of Qiu Xiaolong in "Treasury of Chinese Love Poems."

Nice poetry, lovely book.

Let's get right to the point. Few of us read and buy these kinds of anthologies for their literary merits, few of us know if the translations are accurate, and why even bother to go through such anthologies for anthropological or ethnographic examination: that would be like going to Victoria's Secret to study textile production. People buy these kinds of collections as gifts to a beloved, as a way to open up opportunities for emotional intimacy. Gentlemen, take heed, if you do not write poetry yourself, a small tasteful collection like this is the next best thing as a gift to say you are interested in your partner's deeper nature. This collection is right up there with Rexroth's Japanese Love Poems. What we have here are short, readable, sensitive, sometimes humorous or mildly erotic verses, laid out with plenty of open spaces, that quietly convey sensitive feelings about many dimensions of love. Really nice to keep at bedside, or read aloud over glasses of wine.

This is a delightful collection of over 100 poems in accurate and beautiful translations. Many of these verses reflect the heartache of separation and farewell. It also includes poems on every aspect of love - sensuousness, bitterness, loneliness, married love, nostalgia, grief, and tenderness.
