This collection of oral folklore from coastal Georgia was assembled during the 1930s as part of a WPA writers' program, under the supervision of Mary Granger. The accounts in this book, framed by colorful descriptions of the rural locales where they were collected, were principally from elderly African-Americans, some of them centarians. Most had been slaves. In some cases they had known first generation slaves who had been born in Africa. This book focuses on a set of beliefs and magical practices (some of which are today known as 'Hoodoo'), including root doctoring, the existence of spirits, talismans, lucky and unlucky acts and omens and more. The interviewer also investigates the use of drums and dancing during celebrations, funeral and baptism rituals, food taboos, and other aspects of folklore and ethnology. This study dispels any lingering doubt that these beliefs are derived directly from Africa--it exhaustively cross-references the narratives with an appendix of quotes from African ethnographers, folklorists and explorers. Do not be put off by the use of phonetic dialect spelling. This is not being used here to belittle the speakers or cast them as ignorant. Rather, this book is scrupulously non-judgmental. This is simply how oral accounts were transcribed before there were portable tape recorders or camcorders. It takes a bit of work, but after a few pages, these potent and long-dead voices come to life. John Bruno Hare, March 23, 2007

Review
The reissue of this valuable collection of interviews . . . with former slaves and descendants of slaves living along the Georgia coast is a welcome addition for folklorists, historians, and general readers.
(Georgia Historical Quarterly)Perhaps the most memorable federally financed book to come out of the New Deal.

Highly recommended for its historical value but a great read
By Radduci
This is an interesting and informative work based on interviews with the Gula and Geechee people, who descend from the original peoples brought to the SC and Georgia coastal islands by slave traders. The intent of the work was to discover how much of the original African tribal cultures still exist in the 1940s (when the study was done) inhabitants of the island communities. The interviews are fascinating and the photographs in the original work are fabulous. Highly recommended for its historical value but a great read, as well.

Drums and Shadows

As a history buff and native of the State of Georgia specifically the Coast, this book was especially interesting to me because I remembered hearing from elderly relatives about some of the people profiled in the book. Thoroughly enjoyed the book and the information I learned.

an excellent tool for research on the Georgia sea islands
By Joan Terrell
Since I purchased it, I have not put it down. The pictures of the residents, including the one on the cover of this book, has increased my desire to visit that area. The area should be designated a national historic site! I was a little disappointed in how those who were designated "interviewers" conducted the interaction with the residents. They extracted historical information and the islanders received trinkets. I had hoped to hear more discussion on how their ancestors were bought to this country. This book relied too much on securing information on conjures, etc. I had no problem reading the narrative and understanding the dialect as written by the interviewers. For those of us who are attempting to locate family members from this area, this book is a starting point. It gives descriptions of the communities and the homes of the islanders. It actually gives the street address and names of the islanders, which is unusual but helpful for other researchers.
