From AudioFile
Avi's mystery offers a Holmes-ian precursor, Auguste Dupin, and a young boy. Dupin is actually his creator,Edgar Allan Poe, and the tale has enough complexity to match Doyle and Poe's stories. The setting is early nineteenth-century Providence, Rhode Island, and Case's British accent could have helped enhance the period, but it doesn't. The narration is overwrought. His voice sounds constricted throughout, and his women's voices are much too shrill and breathy. R.F.W. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine

The Man Who Was Poe
By Gary C.
The Man Who Was Poe is a historical mystery with Edgar Allan Poe as a character in this fictional novel by Avi. This novel might be classified as a puzzle mystery. The setting is early nineteenth-century Providence, Rhode Island. Edmund's mother is missing. His aunt went looking for her and now she's missing too. Edmund and his sister need food. Edmund goes out to get something for them to eat, but since Auntie told them not to leave, he locks Sis in the room; no one can get in, and Sis cannot get out. It's very important to Edmund to keep Sis safe. After helping an old man, Edmund goes back to the room, and now Sis has disappeared. This is the first puzzle. How could Sis have disappeared from a locked room when Edmund had the only key? Edmund gets help from Auguste Dupin who happens to really be Edgar Allan Poe. (Dupin is a character that Edgar Allan Poe created.) Dupin agrees to help Edmund if Edmund will deliver a message for him. Dupin (or is is really Poe) has his own issues and problems. He is a most difficult man to understand. As Dupin and Edmund form their uneasy alliance, they find that their lives are more entwined than either could imagine. Another puzzle catches the attention of Dupin. Gold bars are stolen from the bank vault that has been compared to a tomb. This was an impossible crime. The only way in was through a locked door; yet no one got in that way. Are the two locked room puzzles related? This is an excellent novel of murder, intrigue, danger, and suspense. As with all good mysteries, the reader discovers the clues along with Dupin and Edmund. Dupin and Edmund use their intelligence and keen observation as they seek the solution to the many mysteries contained in this novel. In the back of the book is a section called "Something About Edgar Allan Poe." Readers will find it helpful to read this before beginning the novel as aspects of Poe's life parallel the characters in the novel.

No wonder Avi is the newbery honor author

The man who was poe is a fantastic, mysterious, suspenseful, and is a bonechilling story. It has some murder in it but that's what makes it so terrifying, as it should be, because all stories are about or by Edgar A. Poe are meant to not want to be alone or be in the dark. It's just the storie's nature. If you the reader enjoy solving mysteries you should take a look at this book, because at the beggining everything is a mystery including the characters, only until you actually get to know them by reading about their tragic conflicts and who they really are, then you can know who you can really trust. Solving the mystery is only half the fun of reading ''The man who was poe.'' I gave this book five stars and I think you should be able to add more stars because I want to add more! Well... atleast I gave it the max. This book is about Edgar A. Poe and how he helps Edmund find his loved ones. Both characters evolve throughout the story and wind up not seeing each other ever again, Edmund found out that Mr.Poe was only helping him, because he wanted to make a story out of Edmund's worries and problems. But at last Edmund infuriates and dismantles Mr.Poe's story and Mr.Poe just gives up on writting his story. What is also fantastic about this book is that it is also educational, because at the end of all the chapters there is a section on Edgar A. Poe's life and I found it satisfying to know more than I already know. I recommend this book to anyone that can handle a little murder, but even though it gave me goosebumps I loved reading this book and I think it is the best book I have read in a while. I'm just saying that if you want to read a good book for fun, book reports, or any other project I recommend ''The man who was poe'', because I assure you it will keep you on the edge of your seat and wanting to learn more about the story.

It's a cold, cloudy night in Providence, Maine and young Edmund is in search of he lost sis and aunty when he crashes in to a mysterious man. When the man picked himself up off the ground he reached back down to retrieve his letter he dropped. He then turned to a very apologetic Edmund and Edmund repeatedly said," I'm terribly sorry sir." The man looked right into Edmunds eyes and said, " Well you should be bumping into an old man like me." The man then asked Edmund why he is out at such late hours. Edmund then explains himself to the man and the man became curious. The man questioned about the disappearance of Edmunds sis when Edmund asked him to help in the search of her. The man contemplated foe a few seconds and agreed but, under one condition, he deliver the man's letter to the address.
Throughout the book Edmund and Mr. Dupin (the mysterious man in the beginning) encounter many mysteries including finding Edmund's auntie dead. The search for his sis turns into the search for a killer.
I really enjoyed this book but their were a few boring parts that I really think did not belong in the book. I also like how suspenseful the book was and ending which is one of the best I have ever read. As my conclusion I rated the book 4 out of 5 stars and I recommend this book to just about everyone especially if you like any other of books containing or by Edgar Allen Poe.
