Bought this as a present for my oldest daughter. She is a huge fan of the series but hasn't been able to read all of them. She was so happy to add this to her collection.

Ron Roy Scores Another Hit!
By Winemaiden
My 9 year old daughter started reading these books about a year ago, and has now read every book in the series! She delights in every detail, from physical descriptions of the suspects to the personalities of the recurring charaters, and relates easily to the three kids who are the detectives. She can hardly wait for the next title to be released. This book, like the others, has a plot that is believable to its audience, encourages problem solving and critical thinking, and provides a trio of heroes that your own kids would like as friends. In this volume, the reader is exposed to a museum and information about mummies, as well as given a mystery to solve. Another delight for the 6 to 9 year old set.

A SUMMARY BY THE ONE-TIME DEAN OF “BIBLICAL ARCHAEOLOGISTS”
By Steven H Propp
William Foxwell Albright (1891-1971) was an American archaeologist, biblical scholar, philologist, and expert on ceramics. From the early twentieth century until his death, he was the dean of biblical archaeologists and the acknowledged founder of the Biblical archaeology movement. He wrote many influential books, including The Biblical Period from Abraham to Ezra, Archaeology and the Religion of Israel, The Archaeology of Palestine, etc. [NOTE: page numbers below refer to the 432-page paperback edition.]

He wrote in the Introduction to the 1957 Anchor edition, “Since the Second World War came to an end in 1945, there has been much progress in archaeological work all along the line. There have also been some utterly unexpected discoveries, such as that of the Dead Sea Scrolls, which revolutionize our knowledge of the text of the Old Testament and of the Jewish background, time of composition, and historical position of the New Testament. The discovery of the radiocarbon index to chronology (since 1948) is rapidly revolutionizing our understanding of prehistory… Since 1940 there has been an unprecedented rise of general interest in the philosophy of history, as well as anthropological and historical method… However, none of these discoveries has in any way changed my attitude with regard to the basic position taken in 1940 and maintained ever since. I still insist on the primacy of archaeology in the broad sense, including the interpretation of written documents recovered by archaeologists as well as the excavation and reconstruction of material culture. I continue to maintain, without reservation, that we must approach history… with just as rigorous a method as is used by natural scientists, and that within proper limits we must follow the general principles of logical empiricism…

“Turning to Israel, I defend the substantial historicity of patriarchal tradition, without any appreciable change in my point of view, and insist… on the primacy of oral tradition over written literature. I have not surrendered a single position with regard to early Israelite monotheism but, on the contrary, consider the Mosaic tradition as even more reliable than I did then… I now recognize that Israelite law and religious institutions tend to be older and more continuous than I had supposed---in other words, I have grown more conservative in my attitude to the Mosaic tradition… I recognize that the covenant is not only fully as ancient as I had thought, but was much more pervasive in its effect on the religious and political life of Israel… I now insist much more vigorously on the pattern of prophetic thinking which made the Prophets such successful predictors of the course of history… there are very few biblical prophecies which failed to be confirmed. There seems to be hardly a single ‘prophecy after the event’ in the whole extant prophetic literature of Israel… I still connect the beginnings of Christianity more closely with the Essenes and their congeners than with the larger sects, and insist on the early date of the Gospels, including John…” (Pg. 1-3)

He explains, “Formerly the main special use of linguistic method was in determining the etymology and hence the primary meaning of a given word. Biblical handbooks are cluttered with false etymologies, as well as with correct etymologies from which erroneous or undemonstrable deductions have been made. Actually, no competent lexicographer … fixes the precise meaning of a word by its etymology but rather by collecting as many passages where the word occurs as possible or practicable and by listing all of the meanings and shades of meaning in them. Words change their meaning through use to such an extent that the etymological method of fixing significance is only employed as a last resort, where other evidence is inadequate.” (Pg. 46)

He observes, “When we compare the situation in early Israel of during the formation of the Gospel tradition with our three parallels, we find marked superiority in the former case and an almost entirely different situation in the latter… First of all, the Israelite traditions belong to a firmly established people, with strong tribal, family, and cultic ties, which require the existence of validating oral documentation. Secondly, writing was known all through the period and was used to an extent scarcely paralleled in early Rome or in Homeric Greece.” (Pg. 75)

He suggests, “Studied in the light of their geographical diffusion certain creation-myths and especially the myth of the Great Flood appear as among the oldest religious inheritances of mankind, since they are found among primitive tribes in both continents and as far from the foci of migration as southern South America… The story of the Great Flood must, therefore, go back like other American Indian cultural inheritances to an age preceding the Neolithic of Asia, and possibly antedating the Mesolithic.” (Pg. 174-175)

He notes, “It is not our intention here to dwell on the history of the Patriarchal Age in Palestine. So many corroborations of details have been discovered in recent years that most competent scholars have given up the old critical theory according to which the stories of the Patriarchs are mostly retrojections from the time of the Dual Monarchy… Conflicting versions of a given episode in the J and E documents warn us against depending too slavishly on the present form of the tradition. On the other hand they are altogether too close in form and content to be of distinct origin, especially when we remember that much close parallelism between them has presumably been eliminated from them by the redactor, who saw no purpose in unnecessary repetition.” (Pg. 241)

Of the Pentateuch sources, he says, “In all three of the parallel pentateuchal documents (J, E, P) the figure of Moses dominates the early national life of Israel. The older sources, J and E, agree in the main with regard to the role of Moses and the leading events of his life… we may be sure that the parallelism between J and E was originally much closer then appears in their present form… J and E must reflect two recensions of the original epic narrative, the nucleus of which had presumably been recited by Hebrew rhapsodists before the Exodus.” (Pg. 249)

He argues, “Many additional pieces of evidence for the substantial historicity of the account of the Exodus and the wanderings in the region of Sinai, Midian, and Kadesh can easily be given, thanks to our greatly increased knowledge of topography and archaeology. We must content ourselves here with the assurance that there is no longer any room for the still dominant attitude of hypercriticism toward the early historical traditions of Israel, Even the long contested date of the Exodus can now be fixed within reasonable limits… a date in the early 13th century is safest for the Exodus.” (Pg. 255-256)

He asserts, “it cannot be emphasized too strongly that the anthropomorphic conception of Yahweh was absolutely necessary if the God of Israel was to remain a God of the individual Israelite as well as of the people as a whole… For the average worshipper… it is very essential that his god be a divinity who can sympathize with his human feelings and emotions, a being whom he can love and fear alternately, and to whom he can transfer the holiest emotions connected with memories of father and mother and friends. In other words, it was precisely the anthropomorphism of Yahweh which was essential to the initial success of Israel’s religion. Like man at his noblest the God of Israel might be in form and affective reactions, but there was in Him none of the human frailties that make the Olympian deities of Greece such charming poetic figures. All the human characteristics of Israel’s deity were exalted; they were projected against a cosmic screen and they served to interpret the cosmic process as the expression of God’s creative word and equally active will.” (Pg. 265)

He says, “we have yet one question to answer: Was Moses a true monotheist? If by ‘monotheist’ is meant a thinker with views specifically like those of Philo Judaeus or Rabbi Aqiba… Moses was not one. If, on the other hand, the term ‘monotheist’ means one who teaches the existence of one God, the creator of everything … who is human in form but cannot be seen by human eye and cannot be represented by any form---then the founder of Yahwism was certainly a monotheist.” (Pg. 271-272)

Albright’s work remains important for anyone (particularly theological conservatives) studying “Biblical archaeology”; and this is one of his best “summary works,” and is accordingly an excellent “introduction” to him for newcomers to his work.

A Love Letter to Manhattan
By mojosmom
In 1976, Hanff got a job to write copy for a book of photographs of New York City. Beginning her research, she made a list of "Must See" sights, and realized that she'd missed most of them! She'd never been to the Statue of Liberty, or Wall Street, or the Stock Exchange. She'd been to the Cloisters once, many years before, never toured Rockefeller Center, never been to Grant's Tomb. So she enlisted her friend, Patsy Gibbs, and the two of them spent two months doing the things tourists do in New York City.

However, this is not a guidebook. It's written from the point of view of a longtime resident, and is as much about the people as the sights. Hanff minces no words when she disapproves of something (the loss of Central Park land for additions to the Metropolitan Museum, the soullessness of theTrump Tower), but you'll be in no doubt about the things she loves, either (the Statue of Liberty, the skyline and so much else). The East Side/West Side split is analyzed and explained ("East Siders are conventional and proper, part of the Establishment and in awe of it -- which God knows, and God be thanked, West Siders are not."). She revels in the city's diversity ("And you won't believe it, but on Allen Street there's a Kosher Chinese restaurant where the Chinese waiters wear yarmulkas.") She acknowledges the bloody history behind the fortunes (Frick, Morgan, Rockefeller) that nevertheless contributed so much to the ordinary people of the city, those whom John D. Rockefeller III called "the many".

Times change and cities change, though, and it's amusing to read about the shocking "suggested contribution" at the Cloisters: $1.75. The Met and the Cloisters are now charging $15 (though one payment will get you in to both if you're crazy enough to try to see them on the same day), and the Museum of Modern Art wants $20 from you if you want to enter its lovely new building. The edition I read is, in fact, a later one, published in 1988, and Hanff notes a number of changes in several "P.S." chapters. (Sadly, Gibbs had died of breast cancer several years before this edition.)

Hanff admits it when she's wrong about something, too. She had gloomily predicted that damage to Central Park from a subway excavation would never be repaired. It was, with no scars.

Even if you can walk to Zabar's in your sleep, you'll find something you didn't know about NYC in Hanff's book.

Apple of My Eye...is a wonderful book!
By Amazon Customer
This book could be considered out of date in some circles but major landmarks have changed and with all of the changes in NYC since the destruction of the WTC, it is also now a look into NYC's history.
Helene Hanff wrote this book in 1976 when the WTC was still coming up, still being developed. The Top of the Tower Restuarant was "The Talk of the Town!" Over the past 28 years or so it has not only a wonderful tour guide; but for those of us who have never walked the streets of NYC or took the elevator to the 115th floor of the WTC to see the City this a book of pure vision.
Helene Hanff reminds you to never look back at NYC when you are going out to the Statute of Liberty, you'll have plenty enough time to see it on the way back. It seems Her Majesty's beauty should be gazed upon until you etch every detail of her graceful, nurturing, beauty into your mind.
A must read for anyone going to New York City for site seeing, or thinking about writing a book about your own hometown. Helene Hanff's flow of words are perfection and her use of adjectives second to none. A must read for young writers. You are bound to learn something; even if it is where to find the best local hangouts for lunch on a Sunday 12:00 NOON!

Why I Want To See New York!
By A Customer
The paper back cover colours and of course authors name leapt out at me instantly and as it was on the bargain counter I had to have. It proved to be a great favourite of mine and many others in the few months of owning it. It was only a few months as the last borrower has never returned it ! This was four and a half years ago and I still greave for that book. That is the impact that one short but extreemly well written guide book has had on me . The wit and beautifully descriptive chapters giving an alternative side for the would- be tourist in New York shines through. She loved her city "warts an all". and the lovely 'asides' such as the characters that live around and/or frequent the Central Park region (whom we are never likely to meet) makes it all the more attractive and appealing to the readers. Helen wrote a tourist guide for the city hoping that her perception of this vibrant and often exotic Metropolis would attract and impress the visitor. It has in this readers 'eye' for I hope to spend a few days there shortly while holidaying in the States later this summer.

very good look at the seduction of 20C dictatorships
By Robert J. Crawford
This was one of the first books I read when I had begun to be interested in politics. Revel writes with an astonishing lucidity and clarity about one of the great diseases of nationalism in the industrial era, totalitarianism. In a nutshell, Revel argues that the monopolization of the media and the means of enforcing obedience (in lieu of maintaining safety and liberty) represents the great temptation for tyrants who wish to change societies quickly and on a mass scale. While Revel does not add much in terms of academic theory to this debate, his book adds journalistic detail and lucid arguments in a way that is easy to read for those interested but not ready to crack Hanna Ardnt's big books on the subject. Revel's treatment was also politically relevant, as the time in which it was written there was still much debate about whether the USSR was better equipped to help more people more quickly than were liberal democracies. This book does not have the biting sarcasm and cynicism of his wonderful Without Jesus or Marx, but it offers a more focused and coherent argument against this brand of dictatorship.

REcommended as a cautionary tale as well as an interesting view into the Cld War mentality as it was in the 1970s.

Everything this author writes should be read
By Peter T. Wolf
Ive read all of Revel's books. He is one of those writers that you simply have to read. EVERY book he's written is important. I can think of few authors who share that distinction. Probably the secret of his penetrating insights is that he is European ( French) and is thus able to 'report from the trenches' facts and mentalities that non-European writers are unable to discern. He then takes these insights and blends them with his knowledge of history, America, totalitarianism, and human nature and produces the synthesis so captivating to his readers . It is a good thing Revel is on the right side of these issues because otherwise his talents would be devastating weapons against freedom and the West.

Be wary of blanket assertions about the availability of aid!
By David R. Moran
Widely quoted on the Web is the assertion from this book that "...almost every family now qualifies for some form of assistance. Many parents don't believe that a family that makes $75,000+ a year, owns its home, and holds substantial assets could receive financial aid. These days, that family--provided it is presented in the right light--almost certainly does."
Financial advice columnist Kenneth Hooker recently wrote the same thing:
"You can take some comfort in the fact that buying a college education has become a good deal like buying a new car -- virtually nobody pays the sticker price. There are a wide variety of financial aid programs available, both through the government and through the schools themselves, and the real costs are likely to be dramatically lower than the figures supplied ...."
As the completely middle-class, full-tuition-paying parent of a child at an Ivy League college, I feel like a total chump when I read this stuff.
Well, maybe I have missed something in all of my researches and walk-throughs with family contribution calculators, but I'm not sure.
Since there has been such a marked reduction, even disappearance of merit scholarships, and almost everything now is needs-based, parents should know that if your child applies to a private school that includes home equity in its EFC (as many now do, maybe most), and
(a) if your debt (mortgage and home loans) is not huge, and/or
(b) if you make a decent salary, and/or
(c) if you have saved and invested over the years and now have a moderate portfolio (however much it's down from 1-2 years ago),
then you almost certainly are NOT going to qualify for any financial aid whatsoever from any number of competitive private schools. Loans, sure. Aid, most likely no.
So far as I can determine, you are expected to take out a home-equity loan (if your house debt is low enough) and pay the full fare. And/or sell some of those "substantial assets."
I am not saying this is wrong, or even unfair for those of us who are comfortably middle-class. But unless I have made some major omissions, similar parents should not be misled by the broad promises and assertions by these college-financing "experts."

Absolutely worthless for independent students.
By ripovitan d!
This book should be entitled "Paying For Your Child's College Without Going Broke". It contains almost no information for one who is trying to pay their own way through college. In fact the information in this book is so insular, I'm led to believe that unless you're a clone copy of the author, you won't find any relevant information in this book whatsoever. This is a throwaway piece of tripe intended to capitalize on peoples' apprehension of college costs. There is nothing here you won't find elsewhere on the net.

Great for PARENTS; Not Good for ADULT STUDENTS
By A Customer
This book is written for parents who are about to send their child to college. It's not written for adult students, per se, although it states(on one or two lines)that the principles are about the same. However, I don't believe most adult students have their own businesses, own houses and/or property, and can itemize deductions on their income taxes, to lower the AGI(Adjusted Gross Income), as the book describes. The book is good for parents who plan to send their kids to school, but for adult students, it gets very confusing. It's very vague as to whether the same principles that apply to parents, apply to adult students.

Reading Chekhov: A Critical Journey, by Janet Malcolm

To illuminate the mysterious greatness of Anton Chekhov’s writings, Janet Malcolm takes on three roles: literary critic, biographer, and journalist. Her close readings of the stories and plays are interwoven with episodes from Chekhov’s life and framed by an account of Malcolm’s journey to St. Petersburg, Moscow, and Yalta. She writes of Chekhov’s childhood, his relationships, his travels, his early success, and his self-imposed “exile”—always with an eye to connecting them to themes and characters in his work. Lovers of Chekhov as well as those new to his work will be transfixed by Reading Chekhov.

From Publishers Weekly
Longtime New Yorker magazine writer Malcolm (The Crime of Sheila McGough; The Silent Woman; etc.) is known for her fearlessly opinionated takes on controversial subjects, from psychoanalysis to murder cases. This short meditation in 13 untitled chapters is a reflection on her reading of a favorite author, famed 19th-century playwright and short story writer Anton Chekhov, in the context of a recent tourist trip she took through contemporary Russia. Malcolm's considerable investigative reporting skills reveal the expected squalor and fallout from the Soviet years, though she admits that she knows no Russian and relied on tour guides as translators (whom she describes mercilessly down to their bodily flaws). However, although Malcolm admits that she necessarily reads Chekhov in English, she does not inquire how much her own perception of the author results from depending (according to the slim bibliography at the end of the book ) on the Edwardian fallibility of translator Constance Garnett. She agrees with all biographers that Chekhov was an admirably humane man, writing prolifically to earn a living because he charged his peasant patients nothing for medical care. The anecdotes may be the more compelling stuff here, however, as when Malcolm squabbles with a curator of a Moscow Chekhov Museum, who does not wish to inform the inquiring American journalist how she manages to earn a living. Readers eager for a taste of the dismal tourist experience Russia offers these days trains, to no surprise, are decorated with "cheap and ugly relics of the Soviet period" and the food served on them is "gray and inedible" will snap up these concise, somewhat bitter musings. Fans of Russian lit may squabble with some of the heavier moralizing, but will appreciate this real example of a fan's notes. And Malcolm's many regular readers are a lock.

From Library Journal
Recent biographies of Anton Chekhov, like Donald Rayfield's Anton Chekhov: A Life (LJ 2/1/98), have enhanced our understanding of this Russian genius. Now Malcolm (The Journalist and the Murderer), who has written extensively about psychoanalysis and other subjects, brings her considerable talents to Chekhov studies in a work that is a combination of biography, travel book, and literary criticism. Malcolm traveled to Russia, visiting the places Chekhov lived and his characters inhabited. In each chapter, she deftly takes us back to Chekhov's day. But she also relates her conversations with contemporary Russians, and her accounts of her Russian tour guides give the narrative a personal and sometimes humorous tone. She molds these individual episodes into a cohesive whole, bringing the reader wholly into Chekhov's life. It is not necessary to know Chekhov's writings to enjoy this splendid book, but it will serve to prod the reader to Chekhov's works and the treasures that await. Recommended for all libraries.

From The New Yorker
The author's pilgrimage to Chekhov's Russia—Moscow, St. Petersburg, the gardens of his villa in Yalta—is a reunion with this most reticent of literary fathers. Malcolm analyzes the transformations that Chekhov grants his redeemable roués and guileless heroines, and illuminates the hidden surreality and waywardness of his realism.

Short and sweet, but full of good things
By David Light
Few readers have time to wrestle with the long biographies and academic treatises that proliferate on beloved writers. Lack of time trumps the best intentions. Janet Malcolm has saved Chekhov enthusiasts the trouble by doing the reading herself, adding her own insights, and throwing in a bit of travel writing as well.

Literary criticism predominates in this 200-page book, with biography taking second place and travelogue third. Malcolm weaves the biographical details around comments about the stories and plays; so, for example, we learn that Chekhov was steeped in Russian Orthodoxy--more so, apparently, than even Tolstoy. What makes that especially interesting is the contrast between Chekhov's self-proclaimed nonbelief and the way he handles religious themes in the stories; there is some evidence, presented in this book, that these matters were not as settled in Chekhov's mind as one might think just based on his statements. (I, for one, have always been impressed with the sympathy Chekhov shows to the characters who appear in The Bishop, a story not discussed by Malcolm.)

Malcolm also takes on in brief compass Chekhov's trip to Sakhalin (arduous to get there; led to a rather dull, non-Chekhovian book); his death at 44 from tuberculosis in a hotel in Germany (which had various eyewitnesses and led to a variety of embellished accounts); and his relationships with women (he liked them pretty and well-dressed), with his publisher, with Tolstoy, and with his parents and siblings.

She spices it up with thought-provoking insights; one example: "In his stories and plays, Chekhov is afraid for all men. He was only in his twenties and thirties when he wrote most of them, but like other geniuses--especially those who die prematurely--he wrote as if he were old. Toward the end of Ward No. 6, he veers off--as he does in other dark and terrible works, such as Peasants and In the Ravine--to rejoice for all men in the beauty of the world."

As for her travels, Malcolm visits St. Petersburg, Moscow, and Yalta, each city in the company of a different tour guide. Her observations, far from being unfairly critical, are subtle, sardonic, and on the mark--certainly anyone who has traveled to Russia will recognize her guides.

As I wrote this, I changed the rating from four to five stars--I can't really think what would improve it. An index perhaps, since despite its brevity one would like to be able to search the contents more easily. And I would disagree with the book's jacket, which claims that those unfamiliar with Chekhov could enjoy this volume. At the very least, one should have read a volume of the major stories and be familiar with the plays. Among other works, she discusses The Lady with the Lapdog, The Steppe, The Kiss, The Schoolmistress, The Three Sisters, Uncle Vanya, The Cherry Orhard, and more.

Confound it, however, you're never off the hook--the book whets your appetite for more, naturally! Those longer biographies and critical treatments beckon...and all the stories, perhaps in a different translation this time...been a while since I looked at the plays...well, good intentions count for something, right?

Reading Malcolm reading Chekhov
By lowell duluth
For any lover of Chekhov this wonderful breeze of a book is a must.
It was all the more poignant for me having, a few years ago, visited the places in the Crimea mentioned here, including Chekhov`s villa. Janet Malcolm interweaves her own journeys in Russia and Ukraine with pertinent scenes from the master`s stories and (occasionally) plays, in a way which sends one diving back to the sources once again. In the subtlest, most modest of ways, this author heightens one`s respect for Chekhov and his art, and made this reader fall in love once again with Chekhov the writer and Chekhov the man.

A Seminar
By Roger Lathbury
Sometimes I think that if Janet Malcolm decided to write a meditation about the way lint accumulates under beds, it would be an interesting book. Everything she puts her hand to becomes larger and more significant, increases in periphery, and connects to matters one would never have thought of oneself.

And so with her book on Chekhov, a writer whose transfigurations of the ordinary, whose appreciation of the extraordinary, and whose reticence in his art and his life constitute a beauty and decency that transforms. In _Reading Chekhov_ crucial data from half a dozen biographies are distilled and linked to selected precis of critical articles and by contrast to Malcolm's own observations of Russia, which she visited, one gathers, largely in homage to Chekhov himself. The pace of her treatment is just right; each subject--Chekhov's death, Olga's role in his life, the trip to Sakhalin, the relationship to Suvorin--is given brisk yet full-feeling treatment and placed in the arc of the book, which moves slowly toward the center of Chekhov's personality, which apparently Chekhov took care would be ultimately unknowable.

The story that begins and ends Malcolm's visit is the famous "Lady with a Lapdog"--a work alternately analyzed by "Aaron Green" in Malcolm's earlier _Psychoanalysis: the Impossible Profession._ The profundity, elegance, revelatory possibilities, and double-sidedness of the approach in that previous book and of that short story serve the presentation of Chekhov well. He emerges as the most delicate of perceivers, a man hesitant to say one jot more than he believes, as a twentieth century writer (as opposed to his hero Tolstoy), as a passionate moralist who understands how dubious it is to be a passionate moralist, as a devotee of loveliness and talent who respects honest, even dull and repetitious work.

The sense of the word "Chekhovian"--that mute combination of goodness and passivity--resonates throughout, with the singular difference that Malcolm conveys on every page: that Chekhov was a literary genius. After reading her fresh, reinforcing, and deeper-seeking illuminations, I pulled down my eight collections, wanting to reread everything all at once, "The Kiss," "The Steppe," "A Dreary Story," "A Duel," "Ionivitch," "In the Ravine," "Three Years," "Ward No. 6," "Little Apples," "Ariadne," the plays. (I don't have "Kashtanka," but that's what libraries are for.)

Another book by Janet Malcolm is coming out in September 2007--_Two Lives._ Just as _Psychoanalysis_ was like analysis itself, _Reading Chekhov_ is a seminar taught by a teacher in love with her subject. And look at how many stories and plays (the list above is not complete) and how much of Chekhov's life Malcolm presents in under 210 pages!

A Rumor of Angels: Modern Society and the Rediscovery of the Supernatural, by Peter L. Berger

Influential scholar Peter L. Berger reveals five signs that point to the supernatural and its place in a modern secular society Acclaimed scholar and sociologist Peter L. Berger examines religion in twentieth-century Western society, exploring the social nature of knowledge and its effect on religious belief. Using five signs evident in ordinary life—order, play, hope, damnation, and humor—Berger calls for a rediscovery of the supernatural as a crucial, rich dimension of humanity. Conceived as a response to his influential book The Sacred Canopy, Berger eschews technical jargon and speaks directly and systematically to those, like himself, who wish to explore religious questions.

Signals of Transcendence
By Wayne C. Lusvardi
Perhaps one of the reasons that this little book is only a minor classic is its title: "A Rumor of Angels." The book is not about angels or the disembodiment of humans. Neither is it a study of rumor networks or gossip. Nor should the book be taken whimsically or trivially as if it had something to do with fairy tales, ghost stories, or apparitions. Concerned that his earlier book - The Sacred Canopy: Elements of a Sociological Theory of Religion - "could be read as a treatise on atheism," in 1969 Berger wrote a Rumor of Angels as a sequel and antidote.
Berger explains how worldviews are built up and maintained by conversation and what he calls "plausibility structures." Without such social support structures one's knowledge of the world can be seen as deviant or even pathological. Berger tells us that there is an allegation in modern secular society that conversation about religion has shifted from a dialogue to a monologue. The process of secularization is alleged to have reduced the transcendent dimension of life to the status of an unconfirmed "rumor." Berger traces these rumors to their source and calls our attention to five "signals of transcendence" embedded into the fabric of society that indicate a transcendent dimension: order, hope, play, humor and damnation. These five signals aren't like the mystical symbol systems of the Christian Trinity (God, son, spirit), or of Marxism (thesis, antithesis, synthesis), or psychoanalysis (id, ego, superego), or of democracy (executive, judicial, legislative).
Without a social order life becomes meaningless, homeless, and loveless, even malevolent. The propensity to hope in the face of suffering and death is another example of the transcendent. Play is a signal of transcendence from the grimness of life's realities and the "iron cage" of large impersonal bureaucratic organizations. Humor laughs at the discrepancy between what "is" and "ought" to be, and the comic discrepancy between tiny men living in a massive cosmos. A sense that some acts are damnable even though we can't escape the relativities of the world implies a transcendent moral order. These five signals are not logical or philosophical proofs for God or angels or religious belief, but Berger tells us they are signposts of transcendence that can only be seen and accepted on the basis of faith. As Berger puts it in one of his later writings, "God plays a game of hide and seek with mankind and leaves more than a few hints where he may be hiding" (A Far Glory, 1992).
I have found these five arguments for the persistence of the transcendent to be more intriguing and credible than any theological or philosophical arguments for God. The nonbeliever will find the numerous references in the Christian bible to angels and demons as a considerable stumbling block to religious faith. But Berger points out a sociological truism: belief and non-belief is socially located. Intellectuals often regard beliefs in such things as miracles or divine messengers as figurative and literary devices and look down on people who believe them; while the masses often believe in them or at least talk about such things. Honest belief in a supernatural dimension isn't a matter of intelligence or social class. What accounts for the difference is one's worldview.

By definition a rumor is considered to be a message that lost its original meaning; that ended up distorted as it was passed along the rumor grapevine. Berger, the sociologist par excellence, removes the distortions and traces the rumors to their source and believes they reveal the true human condition. Berger often writes very "heady" topics in a wry, witty, and almost comic manner. He is such a believer in the comic dimension as a signal of transcendence that he later wrote a whole book on the subject of humor ("Redeeming Laughter, 1997). So it is fitting to end this book review with one of Berger's inimitable jokes that may best describe his book A Rumor of Angels: "when a joke-teller tells you that he is no longer joking - don't believe him."

An intellectual, moderate view of religion
By Gary Scott
A sociological look at religion in the 20th century, the process of secularization and its affects on religion, as well as it's philosophical and theological implications of it. The title of the second chapter sums up this book: "Relativizing the Relativizers." In other words, if Marx and Freuerbach turned Hegel on his head, here's an effort to do the same in turn to them. In other words, it deals with the issue of whether religion is a human projection. "Yes," says Berger, "But that doesn't necessarily invalidate it," he continues.
This is not some "God-is-dead" theological exercise, nor is it liberal, secular theology a la Harvey Cox's "The Secular City." It does provide sociology's point of view on religion from a sociologist who is himself a believer. It takes seriously the threat posed to traditional dogma that sociology so forcefully poses, concedes its weaknesses, and yet doesn't conceded the fallacy and futility of religious belief.
All this leads up to a pluralistic view of religion: fundamentalists and literalists beware.
Surprisingly, the best part of the book is when Berger switches hats and becomes a bit of a philosopher of religion. While he doesn't call them "proofs," he does provide in the second half of the book "signals" that the divine exists.
This is one of my favorite books, and it has withstood the test of multiple reads through the years.

Intimations of transcendence
By wolvie05
Peter Berger's book is an undisputed classic for several reasons: in it Berger gives an acute sociological diagnosis of the contemporary demise of the supernatural, which he defines as the "belief that there is an other reality, and one of ultimate significance for man, which transcends the reality within which our everyday experience unfolds" (p.2), he sketches a brief sociology of religious knowledge, accounting for the waxing and waning of religious thought in terms of 'plausibility structures' and the tension associated with being in a 'cognitive minority' and finally suggests an 'anthropological starting point' for theological method, in which an empirical study may reveal 'rumors of transcendence' within human experience, or "phenomena that are to be found within the domain of our 'natural' reality but that appear to point beyond that reality" (p.66).

Peter Berger makes some particularly insightful comments on the so-called threat of sociological relativization which threatens the integrity of religious belief. The problem, he says, is that too often the relativizers do not apply their own tools of analysis to themselves. The upshot is that "When everything has been subsumed under the relativiziing categories in question...the question of truth reasserts itself in almost pristine simplicity. Once we know that all human affirmations are subject to scientifically graspable socio-historical processes, which affirmations are true and which are false?" (p.50) Sociology may present a challenge to traditional religious understanding, but this has little to do with whether that understanding is accurate. Sociology is descriptive but not prescriptive: "We may agree, say, that contemporary consciousness is incapable of conceiving of either angels or demons. We are still left with the question of whether, possibly, both angels and demons go on existing despite this incapacity of our contemporaries to conceive of them" (p.52).

Berger presents five arguments for quintessentially human experiences which seem to point to the supernatural: the pervasive sense of ordering, play, moral damnation, humor and hope. All of these may be said to reveal a fundamental disanalogy between man's being or humanitas and the universe as a whole, and they suggest that there is more to existence than our everyday experience. Berger is careful to point out that one cannot empirically prove that these experiences do in fact point to this higher reality, but they do offer legitimate support from the standpoint of 'inductive faith'.

The book only purports to sketch an outline of theological method, based on these fundamental human experiences. It is clear that by and large the theological community has not taken up Berger's challenge to do the detailed scholarly work that would validate such a method. He himself has extended it in his book on humor, "The Redemption of Laughter", but it is clear that there is a long way still to go.

Even though there is so much that is so right in Berger's little book, there is one major sticking point where I get off his train: his insistence that orthodoxy must be challenged, and that a particular religious tradition can at least serve as "a catalogue of heresies for possible home-use". It seems that both the anthropological and revelational 'poles' of the divine-human encounter are necessary: one completes the other. Berger criticizes the neo-orthodox approach of stressing the primacy of revelation at the expense of human experience, but methinks he protests too much. Revelation is necessary in order to give complete meaning and sense to the otherwise extraordinarily vague 'intimations of transcedence' which Berger identifies, important though they are to theological method.

Overall, though, this book is indispensable for theology. Peter Berger is a lucid, eloquent, piercing writers whose words are inspiring, illuminating and provocative. One can only hope that the rumors of the supernatural which he indentifies will stay alive in an increasingly secular, materialistic Western culture.

P.S. For a devotional book which has remarkable similarities to Berger's theological method, see Philip Yancey's "Rumors of Another World".
